How the get involved
Anyone can make a patch for our quilt. You don't need to be able to sew. You can paint, draw with felt tip pens, use
transfers, glue, write.....limited only by your imagination (so long as it is your expression about refugees).
Your group can also make a quilt. A group of friends, school, community group etc can 'grow their own' patchwork quilt.
They can be exhibited locally, in educational and community spaces and events, or even in local cafes and businesses! In the Illawarra,
we have accompanied exhibitions with story nights- information sessions with guest speakers and local musicians.

Specifications of the Patches and Quilt
Cotton Patches are 30 by 30 cm
Quilts are 150cm across by 125 cm down
You can use traditional quilting methods or applique patches onto a background by hand or machine sewing (or even gluing)!
Or you can create a whole quilt panel in any form or artistic means you choose. Allow for a space at the top of the quilt
for a rod to be inserted for hanging or parading purposes.
Send your patch or register your quilt
If you have made an individual patch, you can send it to us to be included on one of the quilts. Most of the quilts have a theme which links each patch together, creating a story.
For example, we have a youth quilt, a peace quilt, a quilt of hope, a high school students quilt, a Villawood Detention Centre
quilt and hope to create a childrens quilt. These are only examples and other ideas are always very welcome.
If you would like to make a quilt with a group, please contact us so we can keep a track of the quilts in the aim of bringing them together as a visual chorus at pertinent events and
protests. One vision is to take them to Parliament House, Canberra, sending a strong visual message to
our policy makers that there are Australians who want justice for refugees.
