Sydney

Sydney is a fascinating city on the Australian east coast. It is the biggest city of Australia, but not its capital! Here we are going to start our Australian adventure.

Sabine in front of the world famous Sydney Opera House. Tickets are not as expensive as you would expect, but there are also guided tours to see the entire building from the inside, if you are not interested in opera or concerts.

An illustration of the idea leading to the opera. The Danish architect Jorn Utzorn won the contest with this idea, which turned out to be one of these projects that take x times as long and become x times as expensive than initially planned... but it was fully worth it!!!

Gerhard in front of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or the COATHANGER as the Sydneysiders call it. If you have a close look, you can see groups of tourists climb the bridge... as we are too frightened of height, we did not dare to follow them...

Sydney skyline, seen from the Opera.

Sydney is a city with a simply amazing natural harbour.

Sydney Opera in wonderful sunset colours.

Sydney Opera and Harbour Bridge seen from the Royal Botanical Gardens.

Let us take a rest in the shade and have a look at Australian birds before we continue our sightseeing tour!

Strange animals wherever you look...

... and we certainly know these ones from European birdcages. Much better life for them like this!

Sydney skyline.

A shopping spree in the old and prestigeous Queen Victoria Building - a must for every tourist in Sydney!

Fascinating clock in the Queen Victoria Building (and yes, that is Sabine on the left picture corner, following the bits and parts that move around the clock)!

A visit on Syndey Tower gives a great overview of Sydney and the harbour.

The monorail, quickest way to get from Sydney city centre to Darling Harbour!

Darling Harbour - shopping centre, Aquarium, conference centre, Chinese park, bars and nightlife... you name it - here is it.

The Rocks - once upon a time a run-down harbour area with storage buildings, brothels and bars, today the probably most expensive place to have dinner. A quarter full of nicely restored buildings, opal and souvenir shops, restaurants and bars, and nice views!

The Opera seen from the Rocks.

Circular Quay - although not really circular, it is the centre of the ferry traffic. To the left, you would have the Opera, to the right the Harbour Bridge.

The ferries - one of the best ways to get around in Sydney. Let's take one of them and visit Manly, the suburb where we stayed when visiting Sydney!
