What Is a Dyno?
A dyno is as Webster simply states:
dynamometer \Dy`na*mom"e*ter\, n. an apparatus for measuring mechanical power (as of an engine)

An automotive chassis dyno is a tool that is used to measure the Horsepower and Torque of a given vehicle at the tires.  The most common uses for a chassis dyno are finding out the amount of power you are putting to the ground and  tuning a performance vehicle as we do here.

How Does The Dyno Work?
Although due to the miracles of technology it only takes milliseconds for the computer to calculate your horsepower and torque it is not as simple as it may look.  It is all just basic laws of physics applied with one another to calculate the measurements. This is a very basic explanation of what goes on inside the computer when you are making a dyno pull, there are a few more details but these are the main points.  Lets get started...

First The Computer Must Calculate The Force                                       Force = Mass x Acceleration

"The force required to accelerate an object is proportional to the mass of the object and the acceleration given it."

The torque is the rotational Force the computer is calculating here.  The first variable, Mass, is the rotational mass of the two 2700 lb. drums.  This is programmed in the computer by Dynojet and due to fact that it is a inertia-type dyno it is a standard variable that can not be changed.  The second variable is the acceleration, this is simply how fast you turn over the drums.  Just multiply the two together and you have the Force.

Second The Computer Has To Calculate The Work                                Work = Force x Distance
It is very easy to now find the Work.  The computer simply takes the force is has just calculated and multiplies it be the distance you have gone.  The distance is nothing more than the circumference of the drum multiplied by how many times it has rotated.

Third The Computer Can Calculate The Power                                      Power = Work / Time
Now the computer takes that Work and divides it by the time taken and you then have your Power or Horsepower as we call it.

 

The truth meter

The Dynojet Chassis Dyno is the truth meter that blazed the trail for making the aftermarket performance world more honest about power claims.  Before Dynojet the average guy couldn't afford to check the claims made by the performance companies when he felt like the power he paid for wasn't there.  Now it is just a matter of finding the nearest Dynojet and spending an hour learning exactly where and how the power was changed.  This shouldn't be too difficult since Dynojet is the most widely used Dyno in the country.

Our Dynojet Research 248 Dynamometer is the industry standard in chassis dynos.  It will support up to 1200 RWHP and 200 MPH pulls.  It also features a  48" Drum Diameter and a 26" Drum Width.  This makes it possible for us to dyno vehicles with axle widths ranging from 29.5" to 81.5".  The factory calibrated balanced drums and precision electronics make it possible to have timing accuracy to +/-1 microsecond, drum speed accuracy to +/-1/100th MPH , and an RPM accuracy to +/-1/10th RPM.  This results in perfect, repeatable horsepower and torque every pull.  It is easy to see why Dynojet has gotten the reputation as being the industry standard and the top performer in the dyno world.  Dynojet has also became the officially licensed NASCAR dynamometer, where even the smallest detail does not go unnoticed.  


Truth in power

The other chassis dyno brands make all sorts of claims but the bottom line is this...  There is simply no other chassis dyno more accurate, more reliable, or more repeatable than the Dynojet.  All the others compare themselves to Dynojet because of this.  Also don't be fooled by the other brands "dynojet mode" as it has proven to be inaccurate and inconsistent every time we have done a direct comparison.  Stick with the dyno that will provide you with true horsepower, because true horsepower equals true performance.
