Dynos can be very intimidating to
some, and most people feel uncomfortable pointing there car at a
wall and flooring it. We have created this section to give you an
idea of what to expect from your dyno experience and maybe ease your
mind a bit. A few things to keep in mind are that high quality 93
octane fuel is recommended for the best results. Also, cars that
foul sparkplugs should have fresh plugs installed and a spare set
especially if tuning nitrous.
1. Give Us a Call
It is very important that you schedule your dyno time at least a day
before, a lot of time we have pre-existing projects or other people
scheduled for the dyno. We will be glad to work with you on your
schedule time. If you need to cancel or reschedule your dyno time
please let us know.
2. Get To The Shop
Directions to the shop are located on the
contact us page, we will be glad to help you find your way here
over the phone if needed.
3. Getting Strapped Down
Once you arrive to the shop, provided that we have all other cars
moved out of your way, you will be asked to pull your car in (backed
in if front wheel drive) on the dyno rollers. Once placed on the
rollers you are instructed to pull your emergency brake, put your
car in gear, turn the ignition off , and pop your hood. We will then
start to strap your car down and place wheel stops in front and
behind of the non-moving wheels.
4. Getting Hooked Up
We will now attach the spark plug wire pick up and the ground wire,
this enables us to get the RPM signal. If wide band O2 is chosen
then we will also hook that up to the exhaust.
5. Get Rolling
At this point it is almost time to start your Dyno. We instruct you
to get your car rolling at about 10-15 MPH, this will align your car
on the rollers. We also now double check the straps to make sure
they are good and tight.
6. Getting REAL Wheel Horsepower
At this time we are ready to make our first pull. Typically the
owner drives the car on the dyno but if you would like we can do
this for you. If your vehicle is equipped with Traction Control it
must be turned off before the session begins. An ABS malfunction
light is normal and will automatically go off once the vehicle is
back on the road.
Manual Transmission Cars
Most cars will be tested in the 1:1 trans gear ratio, as this yields
the best results. This is most always 4th gear. The test is
performed at WOT from any beginning RPM to redline. Once each pull
is over push in the clutch and place the trans in neutral. There
will be no need to use the brakes. The dyno brakes will slow the
wheels to a stop.
Auto Transmission Cars
Most cars will be tested in the 1:1 transmission gear ratio, as this
yields the best results. This is almost always 3rd gear. The pull
will begin just above the MPH threshold where your vehicle down
shifts to 2nd gear at WOT.
Find the RPM that you would like to start at and let us know when
you are ready, at this point we will start sampling the data from
the dyno as you go wide open throttle. The pull will last from this
point until the engine reaches the RPM redline. Let off the Gas and
place the car in neutral at the end of the pull to eliminate engine
drag while the Dyno brakes slow the wheels to a stop. Make sure the
wheels have stopped turning before placing the transmission in park.
7. Repeating The Process
For normal power test we recommend at least 3 pulls to determine a
good base line. Most pulls will only last a few seconds and a
typical 3 pull session will only take about 15-20 minutes on the
dyno. If tuning is being done we recommend renting the dyno by the
hour because of the amount of time that is needed.
8. When It's All Over
At the end of your session we will take a picture of your car on the
dyno then commence to removing all the straps and stops along with
the RPM pick up. We will print you a 8x10 dyno sheet with the
picture of you car on the top and the graph on the bottom. You will
then be asked to back or pull your car out of the dyno bay and the
process is complete.
It may sound like a lot but it is actually a very simple process.
