PROGRESS AND GOAL DETAILS

23 JUL through

bulletI decided it was in my best interest to re-vamp the entire Web site rather than working around only one of the standards being in the root directory. Since I was moving toward completion on my ETEC 525 Web materials, I opted to initiate new server space at Tripod for the ETEC 589 project. For the past two weeks, I have worked on developing a complete, Tech Apps Portfolio shell to cover all of the Tech Apps standards. Every standard features an introduction to the content area covered. If the subsets within the standard have not been completed, an under construction notation has been posted.
bulletMy goal for this month was to complete Tech Apps Standard VIII - Digital Graphics / Animation. That section of the Web site has been completed, inclusive of new, custom graphics illustrating sub-set criteria, as well as several graphics previously created that apply to the criteria. When previously created graphics were placed, I made notations as to when and why.
bulletTo date, I have completed my responses to Standards I through V, VIII, and, based on the ETEC 525 course I took in tandem with my independent study, XI. All materials relevant to those standards are published for online viewing. The original ETEC 525 course featured a different Front Page theme, so I revamped the entire site and modified it into a section after importing it into the full version of the Tech Apps Web so that it would mirror the current Web's look and feel.
bulletI have started to place materials in the Samples section of my portfolio, but am being selective. I will add to this section over time, as the portfolio standards are completed.
12 through 22 JUL 03
bulletCompleted first animation sample using Macromedia Fireworks. Placed on Web as an introduction to site. Animation file size is a lean 104kb (credited to Firework's Symbol capability and flexibility) compared to older experiments with animating images that produced "mountain" sized files. Still struggling with Firework's "tweening" capabilities, which involve selecting two instances of a  symbol (shape, size, or position may vary) and distributing them to frames. No matter which instance of the symbol I selected first, the end result would be a reverse format of my intended animation sequence. I was able to use the Document command in the File menu to reverse the frame range involve the symbol instances in order to achieve the desired results, but it seems like an unnecessary "extra" step. I am researching the issue to see if I can determine how to eliminate this process and "get it right" from the start.
bulletStepped through the built-in tutorial supplied with Flash 4 (the version I own), and experimented with all of the software tool capabilities
bulletDesigned an initial, graphic navigation menu for the site in Macromedia Fireworks, but placed it in the scrap pile after learning that java scripted, graphic navigation is static and will not function properly in Front Page when shared borders, which update text based or Front Page manufactured links dynamically. Opted to pair down the logo header to just a title and implement text based links in the top menu. Because some ongoing project work on Web mastery for ETEC 525 was placed in the root directory, my primary Technology Applications Portfolio is actually placed in a sub-directory. I will change this up when ETEC 525 ends. I have learned quite a bit about Front Pages shared borders assets and limitations. One of the limitations is that once I have selected materials for the top border, I cannot change them on individual pages from within that shared border. Therefore, my primary choice for the main Technology Applications Portfolio is to continue to use a shared border for the bottom portion of my page (listing last updates, e-mail, and a counter), and the "Include Page" function for my header.
bulletAfter working through the majority of an ongoing Web Mastering class project in ETEC 525, I decided to begin modeling my entire Technology Applications Portfolio on the ETEC 525 criteria. My goal for the duration of this week and next is to establish the Standards sections and "fill in the blanks" where material has been completed and the Standards have been properly addressed. In addition, I want to continue working on projects illustrating Standard VIII, re: graphics and animation, as this was my chosen Standard to address for this independent study. Click here to view the shell of my Technology Applications Portfolio and the animation I created.
