Given the events of the day, our weekly schedule is on hold. If the league decides to have this week's games played on Sunday, we'll get back into action ASAP. Best wishes go out to all of you.

FOOTBALL CAN WAIT
09/14/01
Hugh Davis

NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced his decision today regarding games being played this weekend. I am sure most of you have heard by now that all NFL games scheduled for this Sunday and Monday night will not be played. At the time this column was written no decision was made as to whether the games will be canceled or rescheduled.

PSFFL Commissioner Hugh Davis reports that he will not be able to resolve any scheduling conflicts until the NFL decides what they are going to do. Nor will he make any decisions as to how any of the pending resolutions will affect the PSFFL playoff scheme.

The playoff scheme right now is scheduled to commence in week fourteen and finish in week sixteen. Three division champions and three wild card teams will participate and be seeded accordingly with the top two division championship teams getting a first round bye. The third best division champion will then play the lowest qualifying wild card team while the other two wild card teams play. The winners will advance to play the other two division champions the following week and so on.

Depending on what the NFL does, Commissioner Davis stated at his press conference that we may need to reduce the number of playoff teams to fit a two week playoff schedule. Or possibly keep the number of teams the same (6) and reschedule the championship for week seventeen. Commissioner Davis for the record also said that he would like to keep the number of playoff teams at six. Even if it means a dreaded week seventeen championship so that we can accommodate as many teams as possible into the playoffs.

Another scenario would be to cancel the PSFFL games scheduled for week two and proceed to week three giving us a twelve-week season. Any ties within divisions between teams that did not play a head to head game would then be resolved by going to the next tiebreaker per league rules.

PLEASE LET COMMISSIONER DAVIS KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS ON HIS PROPOSALS EITHER BY EMAIL, PHONE OR ON THE MESSAGE BOARD.

I think the decision not to play by the NFL is a good one. The crisis that has hit this country is so far reaching that all of us are affected in one way or another. We all know someone connected to or who knows someone or is related to individuals connected to the World Trade Center and or the Pentagon. Some of us may know or be related to individuals who will be called upon to take part in the conflict that is going to ensue. America will certainly suffer more casualties as we seek out and exterminate the poisonous vermin responsible. I call upon all PSFFL owners to come forward and HELP by donating blood or whatever is needed to the RED CROSS to help the effort. I don't think this page should be a vehicle for politics and I certainly don't want to stand on a soapbox with God Bless America playing softly in the background as I rant. I was not a proponent of the war in Viet Nam nor do I appreciate war of any kind. But I swear, if I were younger and in the kind of shape necessary. I'd be enlisting right now, right this very second, instead of writing this piece.

Football can wait a week. The players, coaches, and owners are people too.
