Land Of the Midnight Sun BY Yvonne Newman For all of us who live in Alaska We can sense a feeling of spring The air has a different feeling that the artic winds do bring. When ice sculpters start appearing in different places all around town. When our sun starts comming up earlier and taking longer sinking down. When the tripod goes up in Nenana When the Yukon Quest has made it's run It all gives us a signal in this Land of midnight sun. The hiring starts for the season The hustle and bustle of coaches and planes All arriving here in Fairbanks Our city with it's famous name This year is our gold rush centennial 100 years since Felix Pedro discovered his gold All of which has made Fairbanks famous with the sourdough tales that are told Here among what is left of that long ago era Sits a dredge beaming with glory She was part of that historical time She can tell you quite a story. Old number 8, sits with pride In her watery grave at best She outlives most all the others who were vandalized like all the rest. As she crept along moving the earth the screming of her working could be heard over half a mile it's no wonder now, when you see her at rest you can almost envision a little smile. Springtime in Alaska Is the most beautiful place I have ever seen Good clean air and water The stillness only a wilderness can bring Surronded by all this beauty It's no wonder that I count my beleesing each day So much to be greatful and thankful for As I kneel and daily pray. you sure know when it's springtime in Alaska As you are mesmerized with the magic in the air Everyone shedding their parkas Then paking them away with care Soon shorts will be appearing instead of winter gear Getting ready for the marathon race Festivals, picinics, parties, and all people working out and getting in shape Ice fishing in full swing snowmobiles are the number one fun I'm satisfied and don't try to hide my love for... the land of the midnight sun!!
