The Grand Canyon State

Besides going to Alaska, the other place I wanted to spend some time in was the southwestern United States - mainly Arizona or New Mexico..I'm totally fascinated by the desert region. After my freshman year at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia (1997-1998) I decided that there was no way in HELL I was going to spend another summer in Warensburg, NY. I hate that place, it sucks! SO..while surfing the net one day I found a website that list job openings in ALL the major tourist traps throughout the United States. Now I dislike tourists but I HATE Warrensburg, so I did the only natural thing..I applied! Within two weeks, I was offered a position with Grand Canyon National Park Lodges (a division of Amfac Parks and Resorts). The very next day I bought my one way ticket from NYC to Flagstaff, AZ for 79 dollars on Greyhound..it O N L Y took 3 and a half days to get there on a bus :)

INTRODUCTION

The Grand Canyon is one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World. The other 6 are Mt. Everest in napal, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, The Great Barrier reef in Australlia, Cave paintings in France and Spain, Rio De Janero Harbor in Brazil and Paricutin Volcano in Mexico (i was required to memorize them all while working at the GC)

STATS

To travel from one end of the canyon to the other is a 277 mile river journey. The distance between the walls of the North Rim and the South Rim range between half a mile to 18 miles. The canyon reaches a maximum depth of almost 6,000 feet.To get from one side of the canyon to the other is either a 215 mile road trip OR a 21 mile hike along STEEP trails (we're prety much talking switchbacks the whole way down). this journeytakes the hikers through four of the seven life zones found in North America. That is equilivant to a trip from the Mexican Desert to Canada's Forest!! It also takes more then a day :)
