PPCLI/VAN DOO'S WW1 Patriotic Medal $100.
Excellent quality bronze (containing metal from the battlefields) medal featuring figures of two Canadian soldiers, one
identified as "PRINCESS PATS" and the other as a soldier of the "22EME CANADIENS FRANCAIS". Obverse has the text "NATIONAL
CONVENTION "WIN THE WAR"", above the two soldiers , a maple leaf, all above "UNITE NATIONALE" MONTREAL MAY 22 -25, 1917" Obverse
bears the text "HEREIN ARE CAST FRAGMENTS OF SHELL FROM SPOTS WHEREON OUR HEROES FELL YPRES LANGEMARCK COURCELETTE and the
French text EN SOUVENIR DE CEUX QUI SONT TOMBES POUR NOUS DANS CES BATTAILLES,SOUS LES OBUS ET LA MITRAILLE" (In memory of
those who fell for us in these battles, under the shell and machine gun.) A magnificent example of the engraver/medalist's
art that captured the mood of those long ago dark days of the Great War in a city/province deeply divided in it's support
of the continuing War effort. The featured units served on the Western Front and fought in all the major battles of the CEF
in France and Flanders. Larger sized patriotic medal measures 45 mm X 33 mm (medal only, not counting ribbon), suspended from
a ribbon and suspension bar giving an overall length of 84 mm. Medal suspended from a pale blue, silk watered (moire) ribbon
with bronze "DELEGATE" brooch mount pin. Delegates were, no doubt, intensely patriotic individuals, usually of considerable
influence. Rarely offered quality piece. Excellent condition. $100
