Melissa officinalis
Fresh lemon balm
leaves can be directly placed onto insect bites, cuts and
cold sores, or applied in a poultice or lotion. The tea can
be infused and taken for relief from chronic bronchial
catarrh, feverish colds, headaches, and to calm and uplift
tension. Lemon balm is also said to restore memory. It is
good to drink after meals to ease the disgestion, nausea,
flatulence, and colic. Fresh or frozen leaves should be used
in infusions because the volatile oil tends to disappear
during the drying process. The
isolated oil can be used in aromatherapy to treat
nervousness, insomnia, depression, and nervous headaches. It
also helps eczema sufferers. I chose to
include lemon balm in my medicinal plant list because it is
an interesting herb to learn about. I also think that it is
another herb that is great to use in the
landscape.
