Mentha
Mint oil may
cause an allergic reaction. Avoid prolonged intake of
inhalants from the oil, which must never be used by babies.
Do not take pennyroyal in large doses when pregnant or
suffering from kidney problems. Use pennyroyal only under
medical supervision. A
mint leaf infusion can be used internally for indigestion,
colds, flu, hiccups, flatulence, or insomnia, and
externally for chapped skin,
rinse for oily hair, facial tonic, or in a refreshing bath.
Peppermint is aromatic, calmative, antiseptic,
antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial,
anti-parasitic, and is also a stimulant. Peppermint can be
used in multiple ways for a variety of complaints, including
gastro-intestinal disorders where anti-spasmodic,
anti-flatulent, and appetite-promoting stimulation is
required. It is particularly useful for nervous headaches
and as a way to increase concentration. Peppermint oil can
be used extrenally in a massage to relieve muscular pain.
Peppermints can be infused as a tea to help digestion, colds
and flu. Cold peppermint tea can be sipped to treat hiccups
and flatulence. Spearmints can relieve heavy colds when
drops of essential oil are inhaled or sprinkled on a
handkerchief. Both spearmint and peppermint can be used in
massages of migraine affected areas, facial neuralgia and
rheumatic and muscular aches, especially in winter. The
leaves should be macerated in oil before use in the above
massages. Mint is an
amazing herb. It not only has mulitple culinary uses, but it
extremely useful medicinally. I chose it because it is one
of the best known and most widely used medicinal herbs in
the world.
