To verify that the
wall thickness of pipes have not reduced
due to either wear and tear or
extended storage , it is often advisable
to carry out Wall Thickness Spot Checks
on casing before using.
These spot checks are done with a Ultrasonic Gauge which is calibrated with specified reference standards. The spot checks are carried out in a pre-determined pattern and the trend is recorded.
If the wall thickness values are observed to be critically low or below the nominal values , a more through Full Body Ultrasonic Inspection would be recommended to verify the integrity of the material.
API specifies a minimum criterion for the wall thickness and to use material below these ratings would most likely lead to blow-outs and expensive operational down-time.
Tuboscope Indonesia has a recommended practise of inspection of at least 12 spots along the casing. These are done in four quadrant positions and generally done at the ends and in the center.
The number of check
points can be increased if there is
any doubt about the integrity of the
tubulars or visual inspections indicate massive
pittings and / or corrosion. We have inspected
under special considerations a maximum of
12 quadrant positions at a spacing of
12 inches apart.
