HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE ENGINEERING/MEDICAL EXERCISES IN THE REGION

(Since 1984)

BY YEAR

1984 Panama Road building exercise (named Minuteman; renamed Blazing Trails exercise) in western side of Veraguas Province on the Azuero Peninsula (first such exercise and also the first time U.S. National Guard units used in nation assistance engineering exercises in Latin America). Started building road from Mariato. About 750 Army National Guard members from Puerto Rico participated. 
1985 Panama Completion of the 1984 Blazing Trails road building exercise in Veraguas Province; road with 14 bridges completed from Mariato to Quebro in the four-month exercise.  About 10,000 Army National Guard members from Puerto Rico, Florida, and several other states participated, most in several two--week rotations.
1986 Panama Blazing Trails road building exercise in Costa Abajo region on the Atlantic coast of Panama southwest of Colon and Fort Sherman.
