A Brief Family History

How we all got here...

Hiram Winn and his descendants

I have been searching records for almost 2 years now and it appears the Winn clan set itself down in Central NY sometime in the middle 1800's. From where, I cannot say....they seem to have just appeared. Hiram Winn has been quite elusive. I have found him on the censuses after he was married, but not before. I cannot find his parents or where they came from.

I have sent away for his military records to see if they can shed some light as to where he came from, who his parents and siblings were. I should be receiving them some time in the next couple of weeks.

What I do know about Hiram is that he was born in North Bay NY around 1833. He served in the 15th Engineers, Co H during the Civil War, enlisting on August 25, 1862 and he was discharged June 13, 1865. Before the war he was a mule skinner on the Erie Canal..and after the war he was a pointenier, a skilled military mechanic...he also worked as a boat carpenter. Later in life he was a farmer.

He met his wife Sarah in Schenectady NY. Nothing is known of her family. Hiram and Sarah had 4 children, Mary born in 1862, nothing else is known about her.

Edmund was born in 1867...his name changes from Edmund to Edward to Edwin on various censuses. He married Agnes Betsinger and fathered 6 children, Hiram, John, Edward, Emma, Iona and Cyrus. He had a farm next door to his brother John in Sullvan NY at one time. He also lived in Manlius NY.

John H. was born in 1868. He married Hattie Bosworth and together they had 9 children, Charlie, Mae, Ray, Sarah, Russell, Mildred, Marjorie and Margaret grew to maturity, but Ernest died shortly after birth, he was 10 days old. Hattie was a school teacher and after the death of John in 1928, she moved her family to Oneida NY, where she was a housekeeper. Mae, her daughter, was instrumental in helping her raise the last 3 children.

Hiram and Sarah's last child was Florence b 1872. She married Frank Brown and they had a farm just south of Chittenango NY. They had one son Arthur.

Daniel Crumb and his descendants

A lot more is known about the Crumb side of the family because a woman named Clara Fiske Crumb took the time to write a book about the Crumb family genealogy. What isn't known is how Daniel Crumb came to these shores. The theory is that he was taken prisoner by the army of Oliver Cromwell and transported here as an indentured servant in the mid 1600's. None of this is verified as yet, but it is a working theory.
