Women’s Studies students have a definite career advantage. A degree in Women’s Studies prepares students for jobs in organizations that work for social and political change benefiting women. Such organizations include:

Women’s Studies graduates are prepared for employment that involves providing direct assistance to women. This work can entail counseling, teaching, and managing services in community agencies such as shelters for battered and homeless women, neighborhood centers, and health care facilities.
In addition, Women’s Studies prepares students to be successful in diverse professions. For example, lawyers and social service providers benefit from understanding institutions and practices—sexual harassment, rape, and job discrimination—that harm women. Medical and applied health practitioners are more effective when they understand women’s health needs and the social, economic, and political barriers that obstruct women’s access to care. Journalists and media professionals are required to have knowledge of women’s contemporary and historical experiences.
Women’s Studies is strongly recommended for students who wish to pursue graduate degrees because most fields expect applicants to be familiar with current scholarship on sex and gender.
