Cumbernauld Youth
Theatre highlights the growing problem of teenage homelessness in their
latest production. “What About The Rest
of Them?” which appears at Cumbernauld from tomorrow (Thursday) to
Saturday, looks at the problem through black comedy and a futuristic
setting. Its writer is
19-year-old Theatre member Paul Osborne.
Paul explained: “The
web is a warehouse development where the youngsters are sent to get them out
of the government’s way”. “The web is run by
Spider, who’s quite a mean, cruel kind of character. The play looks at how they cope getting stuck in the web”. What made Paul, whose
only previous writing credit was on he soap spoof “destiny”, choose to
write about homelessness? “It came about after
reading an article in a magazine about homelessness in London.
It’s a growing problem in Scotland, too particularly Edinburgh.
And with the poll tax, I am sure it is going to get a whole lot
worse.” Paul says he tried not to write with fellow youth members in mind for the parts, although he will be acting in the play himself – as a character called Paul!
