Lessons & Class Information:
Lessons are designed to show the student how to build a rod at home, with the tools that are easy for home builder to obtain. Additionally, the student leaves the class with the rod they have built, starting with raw bamboo.
Eight days of lessons in class.
All tools and Materials supplied
Starts Saturday morning and ends the following Saturday
Classes are held in the basement of the American Legion Hall building in Falmouth which is the northern suburb of Portland, Maine.

Lessons
The class is designed to show people how they can
build a Bamboo Fly Rod at home. It will also show them the tools required and the problems
encountered in the process of building a Bamboo Fly Rod. The entire process will allow them
to decide if they wish to continue with the craft as a hobby. They will also have a fine Bamboo
Fly Rod that they built with their own hands.
During the class we will also learn how to sharpen blades, temper the bamboo, evaluate the bamboo's
quality, and other items that have been learned by years of trial and error.
Six weeks before the start of the class, all students will receive a questionare on the details of
the rod they wish to build. They will also receive a map of the Portland, Maine area with listings
of motels, major attractions, and area phone numbers. The classes will be held in the workroom of the American Legion Hall in Falmouth , the northern suburb of Portland, Maine.

Classroom Info:
Each student will have the following tools for their
use:
Workbench, rasp file, planing form, hot air gun, bench vice, 22 degree block plane with 62 Rockweel
blade, sanding block, sandpaper, thread tensioner, caliper, chair, and book on Bamboo Rod Building.
Tools available as needed:
Splitting points, tempering torch, diamond stones for sharpening blades, sharpening guide,, binder,
heat treating oven, depth guages with 60 degree point, varnishing system, power plane, starter planing
forms, scraper, and files.
Students are to supply their own soft leather gloves. I found found that "Tig" welders gloves are
great, however more expensive.
Materials supplied - per student:
Tonken Cane Bamboo Culm, reel seat with wood insert, cork for handle, ferrule sets, tip
guide, rod snake guides, winding threads (00 Gauge), Stripping guide, hook keeper, varnish, etc..
Supplies available for class:
Binder thread, Urac 185 rod glue, ferrule cement, alcohol lamp, soft brushes, Hepa Filter fan, tape,
wax paper, measuring cups, tooth brush, sing edge razor blades, and tying thread.
Upon Receipt of Deposit:
Each student will be sent a copy of "Fundimentals of Building a Bamboo Fly Rod" by George Maurer and
B Elser. This book is for the student to read prior to the class conviening date. If the student
already has a copy of this book, then a credit of $35.00 (US) will be allowed on the tuition.

Class work consists of the following operations:
1. Mark butt end of Bamboo, file the nodes flat
2. Flame treat the bamboo culm to desired color
3. Split the culms into halves
4. Remove the dams on the inside
5. Divide the halves into 3 parts
6. Mark the sections, 1 to 6
7. Split the sections, try to get 18 to 24 pairs
8. Make bundles of 6, one from each section
9. Straighten and flatten the node areas
10. Lay out the node spacing, trim the excess
11. Plane the initial 60 degree angle
12. Rough set the planing form for butt strips
13. Plane the second angle, start to form taper
14. Plane six butt strips to 0.10 or 0.15 oversize
15. Bind the 6 butt strips for the heating oven
16. Heat treat the butt strips in the oven
17. Set the Planing Form for tip rough in
18. Plane the tip sections rough set
19. Bind the tip sections for the oven and heat treat
20. Set the planing form for the final butt taper
21. Sand the enamel side of strips to flatten arc
22. Plane the butt strips down to final taper
23. Glue the butt section and hang to dry
24. Set the planing form for the final tip taper
25. Plane one tip set to final taper

26. Glue one tip section and hang to dry
27. Sand and glue off the butt section
28. Straighten butt section
29. Install furrel on butt section
30. Install cork handle on butt section
31. Install reel seat on butt section
32. Put first coat of varnish on butt section
33. Sand glue and wraps off tip section
34. Straighten tip section
35. Install ferrule on tip section
36. Install tip guide on tip section
37. Plane second tip section to final taper
38. Glue second tip section
39. Install wraps on guides of butt section
40. Sand second tip section
41. Straighten tip section
42. Install ferrule on tip #2
43. Install tip guide on tip #2
44. Varnish tip sections
45. Tape guides on tip sections
46. Test rod for line control
47. Install wraps on guides of tip sections
48. Varnish guide wraps
49. Dip varnish rod and hang to dry
50. Add extra coats on wraps
51. When varnish dry, put in bag and tube
52. Go Fishing

Local area information:
Local Area Informatiom:
Portland and the surounding suburbs host a variety of motels and attractions. Freeport, Maine with
L.L. BEAN is 12 miles north of Portland. There are area motels and hotels also. Prices range from
$28.00 per night for the Super Sixes to $150 for the Old Port Regency. If you fly in, we can arrange
transportation. The students are responsible for their meals and lodging., but we will help to make
reservations. Winter stays of the week can usually be made at a discount. Some motels are in
walking distance of the classroom.
During the winter, there is world class skiing at Sunday River and Sugarloaf, and hockey games in
Portland. The "Old Port" in Portland has it's variety of pubs and bars, and quite a few great
restaurants. There is one large Night Club. Summer has it's Bay cruises, band concerts, sailing
clubs, fishing, playhouse, golf, lobster cookouts, and more.
