Paint Shop Pro is simply the best shareware paint program available.  My favorite features used to create the graphics on this site include an image browser program with thumbnails, a color replacer brush, and the ability to import filters which distort the shape or color when selected.  I had a little trouble setting colors transparent during the creation of this web page (I had to save as version 87a non-interlaced), but everything else has been self-explanatory and easy to use.  For transparent GIF's I use a simpler program called LView Pro.  Download Paint Shop Pro from http://www.jasc.com/psp.html.

The fastest and easiest shareware animation maker and editor that I've found is the Gif Construction Set for Windows.  (Alchemy Mindworks is the same company that I have the unauthorized 'Death to Spam' link to on my main page.  Hope they don't mind)  Anyway, download the Gif Construction Set at http://www.mindworkshop.com/alchemy/gifcon.html.

There's an even easier way to create animated GIF's, but you have to make each frame separately as a GIF (or TIFF, PNM, HDF, PS, MIFF) first, and if you're going to use the animation on a web page you'll still want to compress it with the Construction Set.  The utility is at http://www.vrl.com/Imaging/animate.html.

This web page was created with AOLpress 2.0, an html editor with a wysiwyg click/copy/paste interface (can also view and edit the html code) and an excellent online help file.  Because AOLpress allows you to edit html both on your drive and online, you can surf the web in AOLpress to see how other pages were made.  The company recommends it for beginners and professionals alike, and I strongly agree.  AOLpress is separate from America Online and you don't have to subscribe to it (and I recommend that your don't) or anything to create and edit web pages with the program.  Download from http://www.aolpress.com/press/index.html.  [In the program, press ctrl-shift-L or alt-1-2 to switch the animated bird icon to a walking lemur]
