Dear Eleanor:
Thirteen years ago I got pregnant.   I was finishing school,  and
just beginning my career. My boy friend, "Ben," and I had been
dating seriously for a few years.   We had talked about marriage
and children but hadn't decided on when that would be.   Ben as-
sumed that the pregnancy was a birth control failure. I told other
people it was an "unplanned but welcome surprise."  I didn't tell
anyone else this, but it wasn't an accident.  I stopped taking birth
control pills because I wanted to have a child.  After I stopped, I
didn’t get pregnant for almost a year; and I got lulled into a false
sense that it was never going to happen. From the moment I saw
the positive pregnancy test I knew what a horrible, dishonest, un-
ethical thing I had done, and I felt terrible guilt and shame.  I seri-
ously considered giving our baby up for  adoption  but finally de-
ded to rear her.  Ben and I split up when our daughter, Holly, was
                            3 years old.   Ben and I live in different states and are not friends;
but he is involved in Holly’s life,  and they have a  good  relation-
ship.  I eventually married, and so did Ben. I now have a younger
child with my husband. Like everyone else my husband thinks my
getting pregnant with Holly was an accident.  I have spent the last
13 years feeling that maybe I was some kind of pathological mon-
ster. But I'm mentally stable and I have a pretty unremarkable sub-
urban life.     I'd decided I would go to my grave never telling any-
one what I'd done.  Recently a friend became pregnant after a one-
night stand.   Everyone assumes it was an accident,  but she confi-
ded in me that she'd been seeking out sex with the purpose  of get-
ting pregnant.   I was so relieved to meet someone else who "plan-
ned"  an "accidental" pregnancy  it made me wonder if I should o-
pen up about my secret.  But I'm afraid that if I told Ben,  it might
change the way he interacted with Holly.   My questions are:  Am
I some kind of monster for getting pregnant on the sly?   Should I
come clean?  And, if so, who should know?
                                                                                                               Mother of two

Dear yo mama:
First,  yes,  you are some kind of monster.  Second,  no,  you  are
not  clean,  and you cannot come clean.  Third,  no  one  needs to
                              know.  Shut up and suffer.

Dear Eleanor:
I am over 20, and my father still pats my
butt.  I thank that's inappropriate, but the
last time I complained  – several years a-
go – it didn’t go over well.  And it didn’t
stop. What else can I do?

Right  now  all I can do is try not to place
myself in a position  exposing my behind.
I no longer walk in front of him  or  wear
leggings,  and I wear oversized jackets to

"I now understand why I had such a hard time getting a date –

women just didn't trust themselves around me."

Dog of the weekbeagle hound
Beagles are said to be among the
friendliest  of  dogs  (except with
rabbits).  Besides hunting they're
used as detection dogs for prohib-
ited agricultural and food imports.
Merriam-Webster lists the etymo-
logical root of "beagle" as "unknown,"

beagledg.jpg
but Collins Dictionary says it may be the
middle French "bée guele," "wide throat."

Dear Eleanor:
I've been taking care of my mother during the Co-
vid  crisis,  and she insists on cooking for me  de-
spite the fact that I never could stand her cooking.
I don't want to hurt her feelings,  but I cannot eat
her cooking.   How do I decline her food without
                            upsetting her?
                                                                                   Irritable Bowel
Dear Nonbowdlerizer:
Get thee to the corner fast foodery  at least
an hour before each meal.  Tell Mama you-
                                        're saving her the trouble.
