The crosslet of the 4 is long, nearly touching the base. The 1848-O eagle comes softly struck, on both the centers and the stars. Examples of this date exist with and without a raised ring on the reverse shield. This ring can also be found on 1849 and 1851-3 New Orleans eagles.
