The 1849 Eagle usually comes with a normal date free of repunching. But there are three separate varieties that show repunching. The first has the base of a mostly effaced '1' crossing the upright of the '1'. The second variety is listed in Coin World Trends as a overdate, but it may well be merely a repunched date. The late die state has a die crack running through the crosslet of the '4' to the neck.

The third repunched date variety is also dramatic, with much of the original logotype present. The late die state has a die crack through the first 9 stars.

The 1849 Eagle is found with and without a reverse centerpunch, located in the eagle's shield, just below the junction of horizontal and vertical stripes.
