Why go to a Colon and Rectal Surgeon?

A Colon and Rectal Surgeon is a general surgeon with at least one year of additional training in the Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Fellowship level. The surgeon has to sit for an additional two examinations after general surgery training, to become certified by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. Only then can that surgeon be called a Colon and Rectal Surgeon.

Compared with general surgeons, Colon and Rectal Surgeons achieve a lower mortality with major abdominal surgery (1.4% vs 7.3% for general surgeons) and their rates for other complications are much lower because of their experience. The average number of colectomies done by a general surgeon a year is 8 and the average number of hemorrhoidectomies done by a general surgeon a year is 3 (figures published in American Journal of Surgery January 1993 - see figure below).

These low numbers of cases do not allow the average U.S. surgeon to attain proficiency or skill. The more surgery a surgeon does, the better are his/her clinical results. Since Colon and Rectal Surgeons perform only this kind of surgery, their success rate is much higher.

Dr. Khoo performs close to 100 colectomies a year and over 100 anal surgeries such as hemorrhoidectomy every year. When he worked in Canada, he performed over 300 anal surgeries and over 250 colonoscopies every year. That experience got him recruited to the U.S. in 1992.
