Twin Peaks : Fire Walk With Me
What is "Fire Walk with Me"? "Fire Walk With Me" is the
movie that David Lynch did after the series wrapped up he decided to tie up some
loose ends with this movie. I guess in some ways, it made us even more confused,
but that's hardly his fault, the movie was severly cut.
Storyline The story is set before the events of the "Twin Peaks" TV
series and chronicles the last seven days of Laura Palmer's life. It also shows
Laura Palmer's grisly death scene and explores the other murders, our suspect
committed. The film covers the murder of Theresa Banks and then the last week of
Laura Palmer's life. One should probably watch the TV series prior to watching
this movie. When the TV series was cancelled in 1991, David Lynch went to work
immediately on the film saying he was not ready to leave the town and it's
characters alone. This was actually planned to be the first of several TP
movies, so it was chosen to do it as a prequel. The distributors marketed it as
a teen slasher film with a horror tone, and so these people were dissapointed.
Forced to cut the film to a "commercially viable" length, many things
relevant to understanding other scenes were left out. Thus most critics, who had
little or no understanding of the TP story, utterly panned the movie (although
one or two did credit Sheryl Lee's performance as a plus).
Kyle MacLachlan wasn't in it a real lot as Agent Cooper. This was mainly due
to the fact that the film deals with the events before Cooper's arrival in
"Twin Peaks".Kyle actually backed out of the film during
pre-production fearing being typecast as Agent Cooper. MacLachlan eventually
agreed to participate. Both Lara Flynn Boyle and Sherilyn Fenn were both tied up
to other projects when this film was getting made. Lynch decided to go ahead
without them. What he did is just forget about Fenn's character, Audrey Horne,
from the film altogether, and recast the part of Donna. Moira Kelly played her.
Nearlry every character from the series was in the film, but after it's shredded
length we didn't get to see them. David Bowie plays Philip Jeffries, whom Gordon
introduces as long lost. The shooting script reveals that Jeffries has been
missing for two years, but also that moments before stepping off the elevator in
the Philadelphia FBI offices, he was checking into a Buenos Aires hotel. The
Buenos Aires scene was cut from the film.
There was a lot missing from the film that was in the script. You can check
out what was missing by clicking here The movie, in incut form is about 3:40
whilst the film we got to see was shredded to 2:14. There was a good bit in the
script where Chet Desmond (Chris Isaak) and Sherrif Cable have this no-holds
barred fight. Also there was this scene that had Coop going to see Sam Stanley.
Lynch has special instructions for the soundtrack when the film was being
showed. Lynch has always had a keen interest in the sound effects and
soundtracks of his films. One need only read one of the accounts of the lengths
to which he and Alan Splet went to devise and record the sound effects on "Eraserhead".
It thus comes as no surprise that Lynch is listed in the FWWM credits as Sound
Designer, or that he would include special instructions with the prints of the
film More recently, the film U-571, had similiar instructions sent to the cinema
projectionist regarding it's sound.
Who was in it Nearly everyone from the TV series was in it except a couple of
people. They were Sherilyn Fenn, Lara Flynn Boyle, Everett McGill, Kimmy
Robertson and a few others. Sheryl Lee's Laura Palmer was the main character as
was Chris Isaak and Kiefer Sutherland's agents Harry Dean Stanton's caravan park
owner, Kyle MacLachlan as Coop, The Palmers were in there, Bobby, Donna (but
played by Moira Kelly) and you got to see some characters like Jaques and The
Log Lady.
