As you may or may not be able to tell, I'm into a more alternate (no, not alternative) style of music. I personally cannot stand any of this top 40 shit, including all this 'grunge' crap.

I also can't stand dance/techno music, but I like MM (Marilyn Manson) and NIN (Nine Inch Nails) a lot, and some of the elements of these bands could be placed into the dance/techno position. I guess I like it because it is more industrial and paints a more realistic, bleak picture than all this popular shite. Until recently, non-mainstream bands never really toured here (Western Australia), but with a national festival held every year (the Big Day Out), we've had Korn, Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails tour in the past year, which is pretty fucking good. And Rollins always tours each year either with his band or doing his spoken word shows, so that's pretty awesome too.

The musician I admire most is by far Henry Rollins. He's pretty different from the standard singer in that he more just stands there and shouts instead of sings, but his music is definitely the most powerful stuff I've heard. My favorite album of his would definitely be "The End of Silence", which is just amazing. I like the stuff that he released before he moved to the big record labels (Imago and Dreamworks), but I also like the more recent stuff, probably even more than the old stuff. Also, I consider his new album ("Come In and Burn") to be excellent, and the change of direction music-style to be excellent. For those few who haven't heard the new album for whatever unforgiveable reason, lots of songs have a Helmet-esque feel to them. I personally like the new style, but I know that a lot of the reviewers around haven't been so kind, but I doubt that Hank really gives a shit.

Also, Henry is a producer, spoken word guy (if you ever get a chance, check out one of his spoken word shows - they're awesome), and owns a publishing label (2.13.61. - named after his birth date), which puts out books, records and lots of other interesting stuff. I realize that Trent also has his own label (Nothing), but the thing about Rollins is that he puts out books even though he knows that most of them won't turn a profit. That's the reason that he appears in varioius advertisements, so that he can afford to put out material that often doesn't generate any profit. He has not sold out, he is simply using his position to his advantage.

My other favourite musician would have to be Trent Reznor. For those 1 or 2 people out there who aren't aware, he is the band Nine Inch Nails. Obviously when he tours he gets other musicians to play on stage aswell, but in the studio he makes and plays all the music himself, with other musicians only doing occasional guest appearances. I saw him at the 2000 Big Day Out festival, and it was by far the best live performance I have ever seen. Even though it wasn't their own show and they had time constraints (1 1/4 hrs), they were still fucking awesome, and blew away all the other bands including RHCP. Also, I met Trent the day before the show at the local airport, and he was a really good gyu, happy enough to sign stuff and pose for pics, so that was pretty cool too.

The other band I really like is Marilyn Manson. even though their live album 'The Last Tour On Earth' was disappointing (I've heard a lot better live material on their singles and on heaps of other bootlegs from them), their first two albums are still excellent, and hopefully their next album will be a return to form. As for the guy himself, he seems ok, and I think that a lot of the stuff he does is usually intended as a joke. A lot of people have accused him of selling uot, but I reckon he's just making the best out of his current situation (financially), and that's more than fair enough.

Other bands that I like include Korn, the Mark Of Cain, Ministry (fronted by that other musical genius, Al Jourgenson, who also features in Lard, Revolting Cocks and 1000 Homo DJ's), Rammstein, White Zombie, Filter, Revolting Cocks, Slipknot, Lard and soundtracks of varying types (especially Apocalypse Now, Lost Highway and Natural Born Killers. By the way, for those who don't already know, Trent Reznor produces the NBK and LH albums).

By the way, I do not think that either MM or NIN are satanic at all. I think (especially with MM) that the music isn't satanic, but anti-religous (just check out "The Reflecting God" and "Heresy"). Heaps of people have said that antichristian equals satanic, but I think that's a load of shit. I personally think that MM and NIN are antichristian in a Nietzsche-esque atheist sort of way, believing in yourself, not in a fake god.
