    Synopsis of Film

“ I Shall Salute The Sun : Forugh Farrokhzad ”   provides a general introduction to the emergence of modern poetry in Iran, and explores the development of women’s literature at the beginning of the 20th century. The production goes through Forugh Farrokhzad’s intellectual growth, artistic and philosophical development and self discovery. It also looks at dimensions of the  transformation  she attained in her last two collections: “ Rebirth” and “ Let’s Believe in the Beginning of a Cold Season.” The program discusses,  in a biographical and analytical approach, the major themes,  poetic imagery, and social-political messages  expressed in her poetry. It examines the impact of her work on the women’s movement in Iran. Selected poems are partially  recited. The documentary also covers her cinematic experiences and how they helped her to enhance her poetic imagery in later work, as well as her association with well-known writer and film maker Ebrahim Golestan.

The video program has a lively format with narrative, original source materials,  photographs,   interviews with Iranian artists, writers, and scholars  in the United States. The commentary enables the viewers to better understand the allegorical and symbolic meanings in Forugh Farrokhzad’s  poetry as well as her philosophical and poetic vision. Visuals and music enhance the voice-over readings of her work.

“ I Shall Salute The Sun : Forugh Farrokhzad ” is an educational, enriching and motivating program for women and men alike. It is a study of the triumph of a woman who challenges  her  social system and, against all odds, manages to nurture her creative talents. This video is valuable for courses in  history and literature , as well as women’s studies programs.
