The Need for "Progressive Global Communications"
Many groups work to achieve specific or broad range goals relating to poverty and other issues
in the world. Sometimes these goals are achieved and sometimes these organisations rally large numbers of people
actively supporting an issue. However it is not uncommon for a group of people seeking to resolve an issue in the
world to marginalise themselves and become a small insignificant group.
Sometimes these groups fail to recognise the power of the media to help achieve the change that
they wish to see.
It is important to examine what ideas are highlighted by different sections in the entertainment
industry. Some movies deal with issues that many people simply would not think about in such a personal way if they had not
seen such a movie. Perhaps "Philadelphia" is a good example regarding AIDS and people gaining a better understanding of the
challenges a gay man would have to deal with, such as sickness and discrimination.
Some issues are not regarded as political by some but they can be very significant in how people live
their lives. Movies such as "Top Gun" may be criticised for promoting a militaristic attitude but could equally be valued
for the strong message of never giving up on your dreams no matter how challenging the situation may get.
"Daylight" can be dismissed as perpetuating the stereotype that tough macho dudes always save the day,
but equally we get to see people from different backgrounds learning to trust and support each other. We see people taking
risks and again there is the strong message of not giving up no matter how hard things feel or get.
This kind of element in a movie can make huge differences in people's lives and this is why the entertainment
industry is so important and popular in people's lives.
It is important to never underestimate the valuable role that entertainment plays in the lives of people
and in shaping the world.
There also remain many issues and concerns that the entertainment industries could lead in but doesn't.
PGC encourages all people & groups involved in entertainment to examine their ideas
& messages that could move things forward for individuals, groups and the world.
