Your Energy Points

Prepared by K. L. Tan

Your energy points simply correspond to the organs mentioned and are not the actual organs. Their properties are enumerated so that you can see their significance in your qigong practice.

The Sacral Pump Energy Point

The sacrum behaves like an energy pump which initiates the movement of energy upwards along the spine.

The Kidneys' Energy Point

This point is accessed at the Door of Life - mingmen. The kidneys are energy transformers. When the kidneys are strong, they fill with qi pressure enabling them to perform the very important task of cleaning out the toxins and waste materials which have become embedded in the cells. Once the cells are cleaned out, the kidneys will energise. They and their surrounding area are where our principal energy and sexual essences are stored. Modern life gradually depletes them as a source of energy. Energy depletion from the kidneys and blockage of energy flow, or a closing of the kidney point, are believed to be the major causes of many disturbances, such as back pain, imbalance, depression, the feeling of being taken advantage of and of fear.

The Adrenal Glands Energy Point at T-11

Shenzhu is the rejuvenation energy centre at the 11th thoracic vertebra located at the spinal joint of the two lowest floating ribs. They rest on top of the kidneys. The adrenals secrete certain hormones to increase the growth and vital force of the trillions cells of the body. Stress depletes the adrenal glands' function and this depletion locks the adrenal glands' point and becomes the main cause of hypertension, listlessness, depression, sadness, frustration, insomnia and low-key performance. When the adrenal glands' point is open you will feel energetic, confident, filled with a sense of vitality, and the ability to get things accomplished.

The Liver and Spleen Energy Point

This energy point is situated at the 9th and 10th thoracic vertebra, just below and between the scapulae or shoulder blades. The liver is the main storage house of energy and contains the capacity for natural beauty. When opening this point and radiating energy there can help to relieve anger, pain, worry, and anxiety, fears of the past, back pain, release the tension of the diaphragm, generate deeper breaths, and improve digestion.

The Heart and Lungs Energy Point

This energising point is located between the fourth and fifth thoracic vertebrae. It is between the centres of both scapulae or shoulder blades. When this energy point is closed we may feel chest pains, feel sorry for ourselves and incapable of love, and even often feel under attack, overwhelmed, rushed, cruel, arrogant and lonely. The most crushing being one of unworthiness. With the heart energy point being open, we feel sunshine from inside, with a sense of joy and love and sometimes a floating sensation. Physically it can help to relieve upper back pain, shoulder, neck and arm tensions and pains and provide a way to recover from tiredness.

The C-7 Energy Point

Da zhui is at the 7th cervical vertebra which is the largest protrusion of the spinal column at the junction of the shoulder and the base of the neck. This point controls all the tendons of the body. It is the "great union point" of the qi flow connecting the hands, head and spine. When this point opens and radiates energy, it is as though a energy mantle is draped from the neck down to the arms giving us compassion, and as the feeling spreads further we become more aware of the healing ability of our palms.

The Neck Energising Point

This seventh energising point is located in the middle of the back of the neck, between the 3rd and 4th cervical vertebrae. This is the passageway for Qi in the many meridians channelling to and from the higher centres. A "jam" in the neck causes the neck to be stiff and an increase in tension. Anger, fear and frustration are often felt. This is the point to release tension.

The Jade Pillow Energising Point

Yu zhen the jade pillow is located between the 1st cervical vertebra and the base of the skull in the little hollow between two muscle bands and outside the spinal column. This point is connected with breathing as well as part of the brain. A blocked point gives the feeling of suffocation. Radiating energy here can work out the block and the brain revitalizes, the mind clears, consciousness increases and memory improves. This point also influences the eyes, ears, nose and mouth.

The Crown Energising Point

Bai hui at the top of the head is the crown point and the seat of the pineal body, the master endocrine control gland, regulating growth, gonadal, adrenal and thyroid functions, and also the functions related to sensitivity and sexual cycle. It also governs hearing, body rhythms, equilibrium, the perception of light through the eyes and skin. When this point is closed, we do not feel in charge of our lives, but rather out of control and reckless. When the crown point is open we feel guided by higher forces. When the energy has filled this point it will overflow and pour down to the middle of the eyebrows where the pituitary gland is situated.

The Third Eye Point

Yin-tang. The "third-eye" is located between the eyes in the centre of the forehead. When this point is closed you feel you have no direct knowledge or perception. When it is open, there is a sense of purpose, a direct and simple knowledge, intuitive wisdom and sense of direction in life. This is Upper Elixir Field or upper dan-tian. It is slightly in front of the pituitary gland behind the nasal passages. It is one of the most powerful energy centres in the human system when opened through qigong or meditation and provides perceptions and insights that are inaccessible to the uninitiated.

The pituitary gland

It has long been considered the body's master gland. In the light of new understanding, its importance is now overshadowed by the Pineal gland located in the exact centre of the brain, just above the pituitary. The pineal secretes a wide range of vital neurohormones, such as melatonin and serotonin, which influence virtually all human function, including moods, sleep / wake cycles, appetite and sexual drive. The pineal is highly sensitive to the slightest fluctuation in the earth's magnetic field and therefore most likely to have its secretions affected by the far more radical electromagnetic fluctuations caused by artificial man made sources.

From above, the energy meridian flows down to the heart centre again at the middle of the breast one inch from the lower end of the sternum. This centre is very important in a woman's practice of qigong as it is the seat of energy transformation, and thus seat of healing and loving energy in a woman.

Middle Dan-tian

From the heart point the energy will flow down to the solar plexus (the Middle Elixir Field or Middle dan-tian) and then down to the lower elixir field.

The Lower Elixir Field or Lower dan-tian

As the lower dan-tian opens we feel a sense of balance, equanimity and centeredness allowing ourselves to be as we are; and able to put a value on everything and the feel true abundance. This is The energy storage centre. The Lower Elixir Field is located slightly below and behind the navel, a point located in the geometric centre of a triangle formed by drawing lines between the navel, perineum and the point on the spine directly opposite the navel. This point lies in the urinary bladder which contains electrolytes that can absorb and hold the extra energy cultivated through qigong practice until it moves into general circulation in the meridian network. It is physiologically associated with the hypogastric plexus, a major nerve network in the abdomen which controls the digestive, excretory, and reproductive organs.

Knowledge of energy points will allow you to direct qi to the relevant points for healing during qigong exercise.
