Small DragonDragons TitleSmall Dragon

I have created this page because in my travels around this wonderful WWW I have noticed that there seems to be a misunderstanding about what dragons ARE and especially the Pernese Dragons. Since I have started reading about these wonderful creatures in the Anne McCaffrey books about Pern, I have fallen in love with them. Sooooo..I would like to give some explanations regarding these creatures!

Now mind you, most of the explanations are from sites that REALLY know their dragons, and each one is provided with a link to that site so you can get more information if you want to!

DRAGONS and FIRE LIZARDS

In books written by Anne McCaffrey, there are fire-lizards and dragons. Fire-lizards are small flying reptiles, like miniature dragons. Rather than scales, their skin is smooth and glossy and hairless.. Their internal body temperature is about 35 degrees C, making them warm-blooded. Their mood is reflected in the many faceted eyes. Green or blue signals content, yellow alarm, and red anger or annoyance. They can communicate telepathically, meaning through the mind.

I'll explain briefly what the characterisitics of each color are for you

These are in order from smallest to largest, starting with the commom Pernese dragons. Hey, the smallest isn't always the worst!

Greens

The green dragons are the smallest and most commom of the Pernese breed. They measure about 20 meters from tip of snout to tail. They are the fighting dragons, being quick, agile, and tough, and are used to fight Thread. Greens are also very loyal to the people who ride them.

Blues

Blue dragons are also common dragons, and are ridden by men (I make exceptions to the rules! *wink*) They have beautiful hides, sometimes being a pale blue or a rich royal color. They're slightly larger than the greens in length and shoulder height. They're quiet workers.

Browns

Brown dragons are a rarity for some reason in Gonth's clutches. I have no idea why, that's just the way it goes. They're one of the big guys-larger than blues, yet smaller than the giant bronzes. Browns are generally very polite, friendly and pleasant to "talk" to. Very nice dragons.

Bronzes

The Bronzes are the largest males, with the exception of the silvers (not Pern related). When a queen dragon flies to mate, bronzes are the only dragons who can keep up with her, the other males are too small to fly that far and high. Sometimes, a lucky brown will win her though, if they were allowed in the flight *wink wink* Bronzes are noble, pleasant, and beautiful. If you do get a bronze, you are indeed lucky!

Queens

The queen dragons are a shining gold color, and are the largest dragons of them all. They cannot breathe fire, as chewing the fire producing mineral would make them infertile. They're the only ones who can lay the clutches. The queen is a high honor-the best of the best FEMALES Impress her. Sometimes they get moody and grouchy, but are respected by all.

EARTH DRAGONS

The eggs were created long ago at the beginning of time and placed in the belly of the earth. They were to stay there until they were needed. Now they have returned once more for their mother is slowly dying through the threats that Man poses.
An earth dragon chooses a human life mate at its hatching and their bond is stronger then that of even a pernese. They become one mind, heart, and soul. They are ageless and when their time to pass has come they and their partner will return to the stars and shine as they watch over the new gaurdians.
Golds are only female. They are the queens of the specie. Only one female has a higher rank and that is the red dragon female. They are very rare indeed. Queens have a strong territorial instinct. Reds are a sweet but easily annoyed and have no problem eating the creature that is bugging them. These dragons can not talk as most can but they communicate through a range of squals much like a whale song is. The only one to understand these songs are the other dragons and the dragon's lifemate.
These dragons grow to a very large size of 50 meters or longer. The wingspan is about 63 meters for a 50 meter dragon. The wings are light weight and the tail makes them quick in the air. When they reach their adult size, they gain their earth powers (water, fire, etc.) (My queen will have power over WATER!)
A difficult manuever is taught to each dragon when it is born. It is a way the dragon will be able to travel long distances quickly. The dragon slashes its tail through reality creating a cut in the fabric of our demension. Many dragonetts are lost in this alternate world between time and space. Take heart and teach carfully.
