The Village Bobby...

Here I am (on the left, back row) in uniform.

Upon leaving the Army in 1973, I decided I would join the Police Force . Of course my knowledge of London, living in the metropolitan area and my size, were all to my advantage, especially if I wanted to join the London Metropolitan Police Force. However, I had no ambition to work in the hustle and bustle of London or its suburbs, and I opted for the quiet country life in the county of Norfolk.(East Anglia) As a mature age recruit I carried out my basic training at RAF Dishforth in Yorkshire. Upon completion, I was awarded the Commandant's Baton of Honour for Best Right Marker. Just someone who was able to march smartly, teach the art of placing one foot in front of the other and being able to shout commands loudly.

My first posting was to the seaside resort of Hunstanton. Very quiet during winter but very busy during the summer season. I carried out a variety of duties associated with being a Police Constable ranging from investigating minor offences, traffic accidents, sudden deaths, lost children and patrolling the township.
As we were situated right next door to Sandringham, where the Queen takes her Christmas holidays, we were often called to attend there on Sundays, and provide the appropriate support for the Royals, as they attended church. Searching the church for suspicious packages and the like, really did keep me on my toes. Well we did something right, no one got blown up and I have still got all my toes.
After two years I applied for and was given a village beat, in the village of Haddiscoe. The house was the Police House for the village and was well attended in times of problems and enquiries. My son is quite taken by the fact that he was born in a Police House. I don't suppose many can lay claim to that.
I was responsible for a number of small villages and patrolled both in the mini van as well as my bicycle. A main road ran through the middle of the village, and I was unfortunate enough to be called upon to attend a number of fatal accidents. However, it was necessary to take the good with the bad and I enjoyed the life immensely.
After two years, whilst life was good, the money and the weather was lousy, and so we applied to emigrate to the land down under, and were successful.
