| I spent about eight months with 6th Queen Elizabeth's Own Gurkha Rifles, between February and October 1971, at Gallipoli Barracks in the New Territories of Hong Kong. This was followed by a period of about 22 months, stationed at the Tuker Lines, Seria, in the State of Brunei. Paradise at the Army's expense. |

| The British mechanics section comprised of a Sergeant, Corporal, and two Craftsmen vehicle mechanics. In addition there were six Gurkha mechanics as well, a corporal, lance corporal and four craftsmen. We worked together as a team assisting and learning from each other. My job, as the Corporal, was to inspect all the Battalions motor vehicles, plant equipment and outboard motors on a bi-monthly basis. A total of about 120 pieces of equipment. |
| We worked and played hard. I participated in basketball, thinking my height would give me a great advantage being about a foot taller than the average Gurkha. Oh what an error of judgement that was. What they lacked in height, they made up for in speed and agility. No wonder I was reasonably fit and healthy in those days. Of course as a well trained British soldier I was well equipped to hold my own when refreshments were taken after about two hours of playing basketball. |
