General Activities of the American Legion Auxiliary

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The American Legion Auxiliary shines as an example of unselfish giving. With
almost a million members from all walks of life, the Auxiliary administers hundreds of
volunteer programs, gives tens of thousands of hours to its Communities and to Veterans,
and raises millions of dollars to support its own programs as well as other worthwhile
charities familiar to most Americans. It is all accomplished with Volunteers.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The Auxiliary, organized in 1919 to assist the American Legion, is much more than
the name implies. The organization has achieved its own unique identity while working
side-by-side with the Veterans who belong to the American Legion. Like the Legion, the
Auxiliary's interests have broadened to encompass the entire Community.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Auxiliary members are mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, granddaughters or great-
granddaughters of American Legion Members . Some Members are Veterans
themselves who now work in civilian life in hundreds of volunteer programs. Many
women Veterans are Members of both The American Legion and the Auxiliary.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The American Legion Auxiliary is the world's largest women's patriotic service
organization. Through its nearly 12,000 Units located in every state and some foreign
countries, the Auxiliary embodies the spirit of America that has prevailed through war
and peace. Like the American Legion, it solidly stands behind America and her ideals.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Just as each Legion Post determines the extent of its service to the Community,
State, and Nation, each Auxiliary Unit is permitted flexibility
in planning Programs and Activities to meet its own needs.

Who can join the American Legion Auxiliary?
Eligibility is quite simple. Membership is open to female veterans and to the mothers,
wives, sisters, daughters, granddaughters or great-granddaughters of American Legion
members or deceased veterans who served in the Armed Forces during World Wars I
and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Grenada, Panama, and/or Lebanon conflicts,
and the Persian Gulf War. Descendants of veterans (great-granddaughters, etc.)
often are presented with Junior memberships at birth or during childhood through
the generosity of an older relative and Auxiliary member. Many of these young
women continue their membership as Senior members after they reach age 18.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
An Auxiliary Membership application can be obtained at any local American Legion Post.
Local Posts are generally found in the phone book under "Veterans Organizations".
Annual dues vary, and are established by each individual Post.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Membership applications can also be obtained from the National Headquarters in
Indianapolis. Members can renew their membership each year or purchase
a lifetime membership called "VIM" (Very Important Member). Some
Units confer Honorary "Life Memberships" to outstanding Members.
