More Pictures - Nottingham Road.

St John's Church of England Junior School

The school is on Nottingham Road, Stapleford and was founded by Lady Caroline Warren in the late 18th century. It is still used as a school today (for 5 - 11 year olds), although as you can see, it is in need of frequent structural repairs.

Many of my family began their education here. I did not. I lived in the newer part of the town and attended the 'Albany' school, built of wood as a temporary school after the war and only finally pulled down (before it fell down!) in 1995!

Did you have the unique experience of attending this wood-and-cardboard school?

Please e-mail me if you did!

Wesley Place Chapel

Across the road from St John's School, at the junction of Pinfold Lane and Nottingham Road, stands the Wesleyan Chapel. Stapleford was once a Methodist stronghold and even in my childhood boasted many fine chapels, this being the biggest and best. I attended Sunday school here. As you can see, it is up for sale. It has more recently been used for adult education.

John Wesley himself preached to a vast congregation (too big to be housed in any building) in a field nearby in 1773.

The Old Nags Head and Plough Inn

Simply known as 'The Nags', this pub is situated further along Nottingham Road, just along from the chapel. The inn was in existence in 1789 but then known as 'The Plough'. It was altered substantially around 1930, to look like it does today.
