 Kangaroos - v - Hawthorn

Thanks to the official Kangaroos Website for this Match Report.

The Kangaroos crashed to a fired up Hawthorn at the MCG tonight in front of 36,514 people.

A six-goal to nil final quarter ended what was a miserable night for the Kangaroos who went into the match without captain Wayne Carey who was a late withdrawl.

Carey suffered a groin strain at training during the week and had his spot taken by Craig Sholl. It clearly affected the team balance with numerous kicks into the forward line finding nothing but waiting Hawks.

The game opened with both teams trading goals before Trent Croad slotted home two goals from marks to give the Hawks a two-goal cushion.

Hawthorn extended it to three goals at the main change despite having the majority of the play.

The second half saw the Hawks skip clear early on before the Roos made their move and goals to Shannon Motlop and Sholl gave the Roos a sniff by reducing the margin to just 23 points at the last change.

But Hawthorn ran over the top in the last quarter and the six-goal to nil final term sealed a 61-point victory.

Kangaroos coach Denis Pagan was obviously disapointed with the Roos performance.

"We were soundly beaten through the midfield, our forwards couldn't have any impact or take a catch when it was needed," said Pagan.

"Our decision making and field kicking was abysmal to say the least."

The good news for the Kangaroos is that Carey will be back next week along with Glenn Archer. Matthew Capuano is also expected to return for the clash with the Adelaide Crows at Football Park.
