Deforestation (

Versus Forest Today (green)
Over the Past 8,000 Years (derived with data from WRI)
.....
The above map shows the millions of acres of lost forests over the past centuries.
The alarming point is that much of this loss has been in recent times.
We can see the hard hit areas in the United States as well as in some of the underdeveloped countries where our industrial/economic might seems to have free reign. Also in heavily populated areas such as China and India we can see how, even in the absence of industrial demands, people depend on the woodlands. We can see how lack of conservation measures has contributed to an almost permanent loss of forest resources in these areas. This alone should help make a strong argument for conservation.
We have the scientific knowledge, the monetary reserves and the organizational skills to completely prevent such mass destruction.
Individual action
.....
We are all capable of individual action. Each of us is a voice alone, but together our voices can bring change.
- We can of course recycle and encourage others to do so
- We can make ourselves more knowledgeable concerning the issues of
deforestation-especially local/regional issues
- We can use our WWW connections to contact our local elected leaders concerning regional ecologic problems
- We can join or support groups that keep vigilance over the protection of the environment
- We can financially support the groups above
- We can keep spreading information and promoting awareness of the issues to others
- We can donate some of our own web pages to promotion of ecologic safety and preservation
.......
It is to this end that I have selected some links out of the hundreds that are available and placed them here for you to bookmark or visit.
If you care to submit your thoughts or experiences in support of our forests and that others might read and benefit from them, please continue to the next page.
Other sources and material will follow. The Forest Guardian link is on the previous page if you are interested in supporting that group.
