Appreciating Trees

It is easy for us to take our forests and smaller woodlands for granted. In some parts of the country we see endless lines of trees and valleys filled with trees. But we must remember that such numbers are necessary to sustain the entire world ecosystem. Waste and destruction in one area can impact other parts of the world, as well as the local impact region. It is good to remember the great contribution that trees make in our lives.
We have used them for fuel, and to build homes and buildings. We make of them tools and other household items too numerous to mention. They are a source of food such as fruits, nuts and syrup; and one of our greatest uses is for paper products in an amazing range of items. The furniture we take for granted, the telephone poles on which the WWW hums and turpentine in which an artist dips his brush, all come from this precious resource.

The forest provides other benefits not directly related to us. It gives food, shelter and protection to animals and insects, and helps to maintain the integrity of the soil around it, protecting against soil erosion. It provides a secure hold on slopes and hills acting as a barrier to landslides during times of heavy rainfall. And perhaps most importantly, it generates oxygen, thus helping maintain atmopshperic balances. We must all work to protect this gift in our lives, and for the sake of the planet.
