The A.N. Clausen Family - 1905

This is the family of ASMUS NICHOLAS CLAUSEN. He did not care for his first name, so everyone called him "A.N.", which he liked much better. A.N. was born February 14, 1855, in Schleswig Holstein, Germany. In 1881 he met and married MARIA C. BOHNHOFF who was born on October 13, 1859. Together they had ten children, who are pictured above. In 1883 A.N. and Maria came to the United States and settled in Denison, Iowa, where they resided for twenty-three years. In 1905 the family moved to Spink County, near Turton, South Dakota. In 1925 A.N. and Maria moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota, where Maria died on May 13, 1929.

FRED C. CLAUSEN was the first child born, and is in the back row, the second from the left. Fred was born January 21, 1882 in Schleswig Holstein, Germany. He came to the U.S. with his parents in 1883 and settled in Denison, Iowa, where he met ANNA ANDERSON, born September 25, 1888 in Denison, Iowa, and they were married on September 30, 1908. Anna, however, passed away on April 3, 1919 a victim of influenza and pneumonia, leaving Fred with two children. In 1927 he married Mildred Lyons of Langford, S.D. They moved to Long Beach, CA. in 1936 and Mildred passed away in 1942. In 1946 Fred married Mary Stovall of Long Beach, CA. Fred died June 27, 1959.

A.N. and Maria's second child was CARL H. CLAUSEN, who was born December 2, 1883 in Denison, Iowa. He moved to South Dakota with his parents in 1905 and purchased a farm in Clifton Township, near Turton. He married LYDIA FREY, born September 8, 1884 in Denison, Iowa, on January 8, 1908. They had one son. Lydia died on September 17, 1966, and Carl died on January 26, 1951. Carl is the first one from the left in the front row.

MARIE C. CLAUSEN was born in 1886 in Denison, Iowa. In 1905 she moved to South Dakota with her family and on March 11, 1908, she married EDWARD SIEBRECHT. They had four sons and four daughters. Marie died on January 17, 1959. Edward was born March 16, 1884 and was one of the early pioneers of Spink County and was born in a sod shanty in Clifton Township. He died on February 14, 1965. In the photo, Marie is the first from the left in the back row.

The next child born to A.N. and Maria was SOPHIE CLAUSEN. She was born October 28, 1887 in Denison, Iowa and also moved with her family to SD in 1905. On February 4, 1909 she married HENRY LENTH, born January 15, 1884. They had two sons, and Sophie died in February of 1911. Sophie is in the back row, and is the third from the left.

OTTO A. CLAUSEN was born December 1, 1890 in Denison, Iowa. He moved to SD with his family, and on June 2, 1920 he married ESTHER MANN, born November 7, 1895 in Brentford, SD. Together they had three sons. Otto died August 2, 1955 and Esther died September 7, 1971. Otto is the fourth from the left in the back row.

ELLA CLAUSEN was born July 14, 1893. She met GEORGE SIEVERS, born June 4, 1893 in Vinton, Iowa, and they were married on June 4, 1925. Together they had one son. Ella died on September 19, 1977, and George on April 6, 1985. Ella is the first one from the right in the front row.

SELMA CLAUSEN was next and was born September 7, 1895. She met ELMER OLSON, born May 19, 1892 and they were married June 12, 1920. They had two sons. Selma is still alive, as of this date, and will be celebrating her 103 birthday this year! Elmer died July 9, 1970. Selma is the third from the left, and is standing next to mother.

BERTHA FLORENCE CLAUSEN was born November 10, 1897. She met CARL GUSTAV NELSON, born August 11, 1896 in Youngberg, Sweden and came to the US in 1916. They were married on June 3, 1922 in South Dakota. Together they had two daughters. Bertha died on May 1, 1989 and Carl died on May 11, 1951. Bertha is the little girl in the front with her arm on father's knee.

MARTHA CLAUSEN was born January 11, 1900 in Denison, Iowa. Martha became a nurse, and was with her father when he died. Martha never married and is still living at this time. She just turned 98 years old. Martha is sitting on her father's lap in the photo.

AMANDA CLAUSEN was born January 23, 1902. She met FLOYD STEFFES, born December 1, 1902 and they were married in June of 1934 in Rapid City, South Dakota. They had one son. Floyd died May 19, 1972 and Amanda died November 9, 1989. Amanda is the baby, and is sitting on mother's lap.
