8/2002 L.A. Radio Flashes. Read Columns & Columnists (C&C) daily if you can. They get most stuff before I do. So does Radio Headlines which are updated instantly. To save space, for example, 6a means 6 a.m., 8p means 8 p.m., & midn means midnight. I'll be on a new schedule the next few months and may not have time for this stuff. Keep checking 'was Columns & Columnists' (C&C) and Radio Headlines yourself for the newest stuff.
8/31.5/02 - "The Romantic Hours," Saturday, 10-11p, KMZT 105.1 FM, weekly, hosted by Mona Golabek, combines written word with music. This was the topic of the 8/25/02 Daily News U section article which I couldn't find on their web site. It was called "Classic Romance," by Andy Meister, from The New York Times. Maybe they couldn't put it on their site cause it was from the Times, but I did waste my time looking for it. Info and links at www.kkgofm.com/romantic_hours_with_mona_golabek.htm. Also, www.wqxr.com/cgi-bin/iowa/cla/article.html?record=199 suggests you can hear it on line and seems to provide a very slow link to the original (above montioned) article and more.
8/31.4/02 - FYI - "New Music Weekend. Releases abound for the holiday. Labor Day weekend is the traditionally considered the unofficial end of the summer — and beginning of the fall. In addition, the recording industry also begins to bring out their heavy artillery of big name artists. This weekend, radio is lucky enough to have a plethora of new music from superstars such as Missy Elliott..." More at www.radioandrecords.com/.
8/31.3/02 - FYI - UK - "Radio 1 axes Evening Session. For 11 years, it has been renowned for bringing new musical talent to the airwaves and into the charts." More at www.thisislondon.co.uk/dynamic/hottx/review.html?in_review_id=682484&in_review_text_id=654901. Moreover.com's tip.
8/31.2/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. Comedy tonight. Their September, 9/02 schedule is posted on their site. See link above or KNX Drama Hour.
8/31.1/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
8/31/02 - "FOR THE RECORD. Radio station--A story published Aug. 16 identified KFBK-AM (1530) as a Los Angeles station. It is in Sacramento." This is one of many corrections that appear in the LAT and somedays seem to fill page A2.
8/30.12/02 - Labor Day radio on 9/1/02 may be better than expected. There could be some good fill-in hosts, specials, and some best-of shows. I'll be listening, not typing.
8/30.11/02 - Baseball continues. "Radio stations, syndicators and webcasters that rely on baseball for revenue are breathing a huge sigh of relief right now as a baseball strike is diverted and the games play on," says www.newradiostar.com/. Too bad. I'm glad people won't lose money or jobs, but baseball should be for fun only, not money.
8/30.10/02 - "Fewer format changes ahead. Labor Day Weekend used to be a popular time for format changes -- But not this one. Consolidation means fewer stations changing hands and fewer format changes -- unlike the days when the M Street Database logged 8% to 10% of stations switching formats annually." More at what was www.insideradio.com/.
8/30.9/02 - "AFTRA Urges Letters Against Clear Channel's Voicetracking. Union steps up 'Keep N.Y. Radio Live' campaign. As part of its ongoing fight against the proliferation of voicetracking at Clear Channel's Gotham properties, AFTRA/New York is asking people to send e-mails directly to Mark Mays, Lowry Mays and John Hogan." More at www.radioandrecords.com/.
8/30.8/02 - Other legal names for CC/CCC are discussed at 128.242.106.102/boards/ctc/index.cgi?read=12460. From the ctcr bb.
8/30.7/02 - One column missing today. I didn't see Richard Wagoner's Friday column at members.cox.net/rwagoner/ or in the RAVE! paper. Could he be on vacation?
8/30.6/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. Good drama tonight.
8/30.5/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
8/30.4/02 - Bill Maher from "PI" gets new TV show. No radio show? See www.pagesix.com/lizsmith/lizsmith.htm. Larry's tip.
8/30.3/02 - Arbitron posts some rating stats on their site. They didn't used to do this. Note that you can request different age demos. See wargod.arbitron.com/scripts/ndb/fmttrends2.asp. Larry's tip.
8/30.2/02 - "The 16th minute: Mark Fuhrman. The former Los Angeles police detective, known as "the man who let O.J. Simpson go free," now writes bestselling books and hosts a radio talk show. But he'd still prefer to have his old life back." Some history and more at www.dfw.com/mld/startelegram/3960340.htm. Larry's tip.
8/30.1/02 - "Local Radio Remembers the Attacks in Words and Music. Los Angeles Times coverage of the first anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. From a few minutes of silence to a week's worth of in-depth reports, local radio stations are offering listeners a broad spectrum of programming to commemorate the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks." More at www.calendarlive.com/tv/radio/cl-et-carney30aug30.story.
8/30/02 - "Roberts rules - at least in the news. Roger who? Good question. Over the past six months, the reigning king of San Diego talk radio has been dethroned ---- at least temporarily." More at Randy Dotinga's www.nctimes.com/preview/radio.html.
8/29.10/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for next week, Friday through Thursday, are available at www.laweekly.com/calendar/content/radio_all.php.
8/29.9/02 - "RIAA Website Attacked Again. The association's website (www.riaa.com/), which was shut down in early August by a denial-of-service attack, was hit again yesterday — this time by hackers." And, "...as of last night the RIAA's official site was still unreachable." Also from www.radioandrecords.com/. This may be related to the RIAA's push on ISP's to block a Chinese music site. See previous Flash.
8/29.8/02 - "Radio Gears Up For Possible Baseball Strike" and "With just one day to go before a planned work stoppage by Major League Baseball players..." says www.radioandrecords.com/. Baseball is for kids, and some of these need a spanking. Get baseball off the radio or on Disney's KDIS (same thing), and open time for better stuff. Keep an eye on any media outlet for updates. Also, "Radio.... local, national, satellite and internet, are scrambling to get ready to fill in, not only the time but a huge loss in revenue," says www.newradiostar.com/.
8/29.7/02 - Hannity's book #3. Run for president? So suggests Drudge at www.drudgereport.com/hannity3.htm.
8/29.6/02 - "Hip-Hopcrisy - Allegations of payola and corporate cruelty crack the glossy facade of Radio One." More at clevescene.com./issues/2002-08-28/feature.html/1/index.html. Tip from NYr bb.
8/29.5/02 - Tripod quit on me yesterday. I had planned to do more yesterday, but tripod quit working.
8/29.4/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. Good stuff tonight.
8/29.3/02 - Larry King, Mon-Fri, 8-9p, KFWB 980 AM.
8/29.2/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
8/29.1/02 - "Ruppert Returns to KPFK. Host Michael Slate Provides Sharp Contrast to FTW Chief's Previous Appearances Earlier This Year. Aug. 28, 2002, 17:00 PDT (FTW) -- FTW Publisher/Editor Mike Ruppert appeared yesterday afternoon on KPFK, Pacifica Radio Corp.'s station in Los Angeles, to discuss the U.S. government's foreknowledge of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, the subsequent crackdown on civil liberties, and the imminent U.S. invasion of Iraq." More at www.fromthewilderness.com/free/ww3/082802_kpfk.html. Moreover.com's tip.
8/29/02 - Searches in the Los Angeles Downtown News seem to work again. Entering words like radio will get results, but I didn't notice anything new that was of interest to me. PS - Their search stopped working a month or two ago. Try www.downtownnews.com/archive/index.inn.
8/28.10/02 - Headphone replacement news. My poor 99¢ headphones were replaces with "Koss KTX-1," it says on the phones. Much better sound and volume, and they more firmly grip my head. The cord is longer, and I tie it in a knot to keep it out of the way, but a twister would be better. The cord looks like small, speaker wire and should last longer. At Wal*Mart the shelf said maybe $5.99, but they rang for $4.96 plus tax. They come with or without extra ear pads, at the same price? Details and updates at Radio Hardware someday.
8/28.9/02 - CCC search engine finds CCC info: "Search criteria : Market, Format, Call letters, or Frequency." Try www.clearchannel.com/Radio/rad_search.php. Tip from ctcr bb.
8/28.8/02 - "Cheap Channel News - V. [Voice] Tracking ends at KOST? CC gets ready to lobby for more expansion. LAradio has a story that Jhani Kaye has begun to "hire back" KOST personalities that were let go in favor of the voice tracking system Cheap Channel "revloutionized" the radio biz with..." A bb posting, more at members3.boardhost.com/scgroove/msg/11097.html. Read the comments which follow; maybe it's cause the DJs work cheaper!
8/28.7/02 - "Saul Levine urges Congress: Don't let XM or Sirius be acquired by a big radio group." Also from what was www.insideradio.com. Sam runs 'classical KMZT-FM (105.1) and contemporary standards KSUR-AM (1260)' in L.A.
8/28.6/02 - "AFTRA appeals to the public to keep CC’s voicetracking out of New York. In the past week AFTRA members have handed out leaflets at two concerts sponsored by Clear Channel’s WKTU. AFTRA’s message to the public is that the community would be hurt by the loss of personal appearances and on-air promotions...." More at what was www.insideradio.com.
8/28.5/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. Try 'Have Gun,' the best western ever?
8/28.4/02 - Larry King, Mon-Fri, 8-9p, KFWB 980 AM.
8/28.3/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
8/28.2/02 - "Atlanta: Sean Hannity autographs 600 books in 5 hours (do the math) (read)," says Larry, at www.radiodailynews.com/, and linked above. However, book deals differ. Maybe he got all his money up front, but the contract says he must push his book for free. Or, at the other end, maybe he got nothing up front, and maybe as much as a $1.00 for each book sold. You don't know till you see the contract, especially first books, especially in these times.
8/28.1/02 - Hi-tech stuff in Robert Gonsett's newsletter at www.bext.com/_CGC/, #535, dated 8/28/02.

(Sony Pictures Entertainment, Vivendi Universal and Viacom/Paramount weren't included in the study.)... More at www.calendarlive.com/printedition/calendar/mreport/cl-et-morn28aug28.story.
8/27.4/02 - "The Measurecast internet radio listening ratings are out for the week and they continue to show a huge growth for Christian Contemporary. The Educational Media Foundation (EMF) placed two stations in the MeasureCast Weekly Top 25 ranking of Web radio stations..." More at www.newradiostar.com and measurecast.com.
8/27.3/02 - "This could be a wipe-out week for many remaining webcasters. Barring last-minute legal moves, the controversial Copyright Office performance royalty rates take effect this Sunday, September 1." More at what was insideradio.com.

8/26.2/02 - "Radio Aftershock. As fans protest, fired jocks are silent[.] While fans of the Opie and Anthony radio show gathered to support the duo in front of WNEW/102.7 FM's Manhattan office, the shock jocks themselves were silent Friday, a day after their afternoon program was canceled in the wake of a stunt involving supposed sex acts in St. Patrick's Cathedral. More at www.newsday.com/news/printedition/ny-bzopie242836427aug24.story?coll=ny%2Dnews%2Dprint. Moreover.com's tip.
8/26.1/02 - "What does the morning radio landscape sound like? Station by station rundown[.] For $36 per year, laradio.com should be doing a lot more of this stuff!
8/26/02 - "Reaching Arabs Via Airwaves. Radio Sawa, compliments of the U.S. government, has the attention of Middle East youths. But not everyone is into its groove. WASHINGTON -- It's 4:15 p.m. and Nasser Husseini, a commando in America's new war of influence in the Middle East, is bopping and sweating inside his tiny glass box in the bowels of the Voice of America building." More at www.calendarlive.com/tv/cl-fg-sawa26aug26.story.
8/25.5/02 - "Broadcaster Saul Levine struggles to keep K-Mozart and K-Surf afloat amid buyout offers, low ratings. Maybe Saul Levine doesn't need the money. Or, unlikely as it may seem, the last independent radio guy in town might have a higher calling. Levine has managed to withstand megabuck offers from the nation's top radio chains in order to keep his two local outlets - classical KMZT-FM (105.1) and contemporary standards KSUR-AM (1260) - completely autonomous." More at u.dailynews.com/music/articles/0802/22/music01.asp. How did I find this?

8/25.2/02 - I can't find the story on the Daily News site from today's U-section about a classical music show. They seldom mention radio, but when they do one can't locate it on their site. Wonder why I seldom mention them?

8/21/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
8/20.6/02 - FYI - "RealNetworks launches new software, radio subscription. SEATTLE (AP) - RealNetworks Inc. released a new version on Tuesday of its Internet media-playing software that lets users burn music onto compact discs, watch digital videos and play most audio and video -- even if it's programmed in a competitor's format. 8/20.1/02 - Hi-tech stuff in Robert Gonsett's newsletter at www.bext.com/_CGC/, #533, dated 8/20/02.
8/20/02 - "CCU [CCC?] Selects New RDCEO", "Oops," "Young Critic," and "Your Life" in Richard Wagoner's Friday column at members.cox.net/rwagoner/. He might mean CCC rather than CCU.
8/19.6/02 - New show on Jewish interests and thought. Jay Sanderson, CEO of the Jewish Television Network, has a newish show on "Jewish interests and thought" on Sunday, 9-10a, on KFI 640 AM. The Jewish Journal of 8/16/02 has the story on page 33, called "Video Spawns a Radio Star." It's also on their site at www.jewishjournal.com/. I haven't heard the show yet.
8/19.5/02 - RIAA 'blocks' website. "(August 19, 2002 8:56am) In a new tactic that shows the massive strength of the RIAA, a website, apparently out of China, that the record company lobby organization disapproves of, has disappeared from at least the American Internet screen. The RIAA sued UUNET, A&T Broadband, Cable & Wireless, Sprint and Advanced Network Services, demanding they block the website Listen4ever.com." More at www.newradiostar.com/. I can't get into the Listen4ever.com site.
8/19.4/02 - "We're up to 50 LPFM stations on the air" says www.mstreet.net/. That's low-power FM, which L.A. won't have.
8/19.3/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. Westerns tonight.
8/19.2/02 - Larry King, Mon-Fri, 8-9p, KFWB 980 AM.
8/19.1/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
8/19/02 - LAT remains unsearchable. A search for their "In the Know" column this morning didn't pin-point it. You'll have to hunt through their Calendar section at www.latimes.com/entertainment/printedition/calendar/ where you'll find three items which, from their titles, don't seem to discuss radio. However, these three items are listed on their list of "Morning Report" columns at www.calendarlive.com/tools/more.jsp?section=%2Fprintedition%2Fcalendar%2Fmreport which today doesn't list any "Morning Report" columns. Don't expect me to find much radio stuff in the LAT (even if they print any) till searches become productive.
8/18.3/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM.
8/18.2/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
8/18.1/02 - More OCR program picks at www.ocregister.com/show/radio18cci.shtml.
8/18/02 - "Mike Villani -- he's all over the place," "HISPANIC RATINGS," "ED NIX MEMORIES," program picks, and more in Gary Lycan's Sunday column at www.ocregister.com/show/radio.shtml. Also:

8/17.3/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. Comedy tonight.
8/17.2/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
8/17.1/02 - John and Ken, mentioned yesterday, will be on vacation for about a week, starting Monday. But, they will return instantly when/if the David Westerfield trial ends.
8/17/02 - The LAT revised their keyword searches or whatever this week, so my old searches on C&C don't work. This was first mentioned in the 8/14.1/02 flash. Here are a few new ones, set to search the whole LAT, but the results from the Calendar section could be the best. However, these search seem not to find stuff before about the last few days??
8/16.12/02 - Talk KFI is #4, leaving talk KABC in the dust. All-news KNX is only 0.1 behind talk KLSX and both also beat talk KABC. Classical music KMZT-FM beats all-news KFWB-AM. Talk KLAC doubled talk KRLA's numbers, but new KRLA morning show could help. This period's Arbitron numbers are in at www.radioandrecords.com/Subscribers/ratings/homepage.htm, and click on Los Angeles or #2. R&R says, "In Los Angeles, CHR/Rhythmic KPWR moves 4.9-5.0 to strengthen its No. 1 position, while Alternative KROQ jumps 4.3-4.8 to take second. Regional Mexican KSCA dips 4.7-4.4 for third."
8/16.11/02 - Ron Fineman comment, by a reader, concerning the 8/16.2/02 flash. "He's been more and more out of control over the last year. Getting more strident and vicious in expressing his opinions of industry people, particularly women and minorities, as well as his general political opinions. It doesn't affect his general audience, since they don't see the site, but for me, he lost all credibility as a reporter. And you can't just throw around crap and expect to work in the same industry in the same city. Not smart. I hope he learns something from this." From members3.boardhost.com/scgroove/msg/10887.html.
8/16.10/02 - John and Ken website correction. They announce it as www.johnandkenshow.com/, but I did list it as www.johnandken.com/ which also seems to work. Check their site for links to newspapers articles, etc. John and Ken, weekdays, 3-7p, KFI 640 AM - just don't tell anyone you listen.
8/16.9/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. Good stuff tonight.
8/16.8/02 - Julia Child's interview. If you missed Larry King's interview last night, the transcripts (one hour's worth) at at www.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0208/15/lkl.00.html. I heard the whole show but hope I have the time to read this also. Stuff about fast food, chefs, likes, dislikes, being 90, and more.
8/16.7/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
8/16.6/02 - FYI - UK - "New Radio Station. The BBC's latest digital radio station, 1Xtra, launches nationally this evening. Ron Fineman, a part-time reporter for KNX-AM (1070), was fired Thursday by the news station. 8/14.1/02 - LAT revises keyword searches?, locations, or something. The LAT's "Morning Report" was not found in the usual location this morning. It's at www.calendarlive.com/printedition/calendar/mreport/cl-et-morn14aug14.story. But, no radio. Also, my usual 'radio' keywork search didn't find anything for today. I'll need to revise my links/keyword searches at the top of C&C. Till then just enter "Morning Report" and radio as keyword searches at www.latimes.com/ and/or www.calendarlive.com/.

8/12.8/02 - "Goodbye, My Fancy" was the missing title for the Lux show last night on the KNX Drama Hour per the 8/11.3/02 Flash. A review is found at us.imdb.com/Title?0043595. I didn't locate it with a star search, but a fuzzy title search helped?
8/12.7/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. Westerns tonight.
8/12.6/02 - Larry King, Mon-Fri, 8-9p, KFWB 980 AM.

8/12.3/02 - Comsumer tips. If you missed Ben Dover's Sunday show, 8-10a, KFI 640 AM, Larry reminds us that Ben posts his major tips on Ben's site. For a easier-to-use list and links check Larry's page at www.radiodailynews.com/bendover811.htm. Larry's tip. Or, Ben's site is www.bendover.com/.

A company whose technology will serve as the basis for most digital radio broadcasting announced Monday a number of deals for compatible radios and the chips that will power them. Columbia, Md.-based iBiquity Digital, backed by most of the nation's major radio broadcasters, also announced a new brand name for its technology: HD Radio." 8/11.1/02 - OCR programs picks for this week and station program summaries at www.ocregister.com/show/radio11cci.shtml. More at the 8/11/02 Flash below.
8/11/02 - "Jazz station changes its call letters," "NEW KRLA SHOW," "O.C.-ONLY RATINGS," "ED NIX MEMORIES," program picks, and more in Gary Lycan's Sunday column at www.ocregister.com/show/radio.shtml. Stuff like, "Talk KFI/640 AM is the overall No. 1 station in Orange County, according to the new Spring Arbitron ratings measuring listening March-June."
8/10.4/02 - My Walkman radio report. My Sony WM-FX281 radio is about eight months old, and it's time for a report. See my initial report dated 12/22/01 and a link to a picture at hardware. The headphones were covered in the 8/7.1/02 Flash.

8/10.12/02 - The Los Angeles Downtown News at www.downtownnews.com/ may have a problem with their search function. I can usually search for radio, and it finds stories. Since about 7/1/02, search doesn't seem to work properly. Who knows?
8/9.11/02 - "Talker Neal Boortz asks: Why should broadcasters swear off ads for a whole day? After all -- nobody's asking newspapers or magazines to cancel all their advertising. Boortz went on a good-sized rant on the subject." Seems someone doesn't want any radio ads on 9/11. From the old insideradio.com, now at www.mstreet.net/.
8/9.10/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. Good stuff:
8/9.9/02 - Larry King, Mon-Fri, 8-9p, KFWB 980 AM.
8/9.8/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
8/9.7/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for this week, Friday through Thursday, are available at www.laweekly.com/calendar/content/radio_all.php.
8/9.6/02 - FYI - "Radio Producer Kicked Out Of Westerfield Trial. Stillwood Would Not Identify Source Of Confidential Information. 8/9.4/02 - Hi-tech stuff in Robert Gonsett's newsletter at www.bext.com/_CGC/, #531, dated 8/7/02.
8/9.3/02 - Salaries and KIIS. A couple of FYIs from laradio.com:
8/9.2/02 - "KLON Becomes KKJZ on Friday [today]. Radio station KLON-FM (88.1) will change its call letters Friday to KKJZ to better reflect its format of jazz and blues." More at www.calendarlive.com/printedition/calendar/cl-wk-jazz8aug08.story.
8/9.1/02 - "Needling a Nation. Larry Elder, the L.A. talk show host whose libertarian views often provoke his listeners, is taking his message to a larger audience...He jumps to national syndication on Monday after eight years at KABC-AM (790), where he's heard weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m." This was reported a few weeks ago, and it's bad news since L.A. lacks local-focus shows. More at events.calendarlive.com/top/1,1419,L-LATimes-TV-X!ArticleDetail-68603,00.html.
8/9/02 - Richard Wagoner's Friday column isn't on his site or in the RAVE! paper. Maybe he's on vacation.
8/8/02 - Tripod was broken today; I couldn't get into their site editor.
8/7.7/02 - KCRW 89.9 FM returns to top-25 list at number 24 on the www.measurecast.com/ list, but, as we all know, KCRW is not an internet-only station. I tire of their weekly mistakes as, I'm sure, people tire of mine.
8/7.6/02 - "iBiquity Digital Readies TiVo-Like Radio Service. IBOC developer gets Command Audio license. In-band, on-channel digital radio developer iBiquity Digital has obtained an exclusive worldwide license for Command Audio's digital radio assets, including Command's on-demand audio tools. iBiquity says that radio broadcasters will be able to provide listeners with on-demand programming that will operate in much the same way as on-demand television provider TiVo, including such features as pausing content or saving it for later listening." From www.radioandrecords.com. Others says the IBOC radio-broadcast system itself has known problems/objections, but I haven't heard anything about this 'TiVo' stuff.
8/7.5/02 - "ASK THE SCHOOLS CHIEF" was scheduled for today, 10a, on KFWB 980 AM. They just posted it on their site today; a little late. Yesterday's 8/6.4/02 Flash had a warning and the site link concerning this lack of notice.
8/7.4/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. But first:
8/7.3/02 - Larry King, Mon-Fri, 8-9p, KFWB 980 AM.
8/7.2/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
8/7.1/02 - FYI - Headphones. The headphones that came with my Sony radio (see hardware, the 12/22/01 item) lasted about seven months before they opened near the left ear. I do tend to drop headphones. I switched to another pair leftover from an off-brand radio, and they only lasted a few weeks before they opened near the plug. These sounded fuzzy compared to the Sony. Now I'm on a pair from the 99¢ Only Store which sound fuzzy, tinny, low-fi, low volume, and are even poor for voice. Even maximum bass boost doesn't change the sound through the phones. Outside I often at full volume. In the past I didn't like the the 99¢ Only phones cause they mechanically fell apart, but these look like another design, so we'll see how they last. P.S. - These come with a quarter-inch-plug adapter. Point: there are differences between headphones.
8/7/02 - FYI - Pic 'N' Save becomes Big! Lots. Pic 'N' Save, a group of discount stores known for their often dirty, unkept stores, total lack of service, long checkout lines, and often high prices, changes their name to Big! Lots. Some stores have the Big! Lots sign and another that says they were formerly Pic 'N' Save. They were even a step down from Kmart. They'd better change before the 99¢ Only Store group, started by former Pic 'N' Save employees, takes all their business.
8/6.4/02 - "Ask the Mayor" & "Ask the School Chief." KFWB 980 AM hasn't yet posted their 8/02 schedule for these shows, but keep checking Wednesday at 10a. Keep an eye on kfwb.com/inside.asp.
8/6.3/02 - "'Good Mornin' (Your Town Here)'. It's 11 p.m. Do you know where your favorite disc jockey is?" Another Randy Dotinga outlet. More at www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,54037,00.html. Larry's tip.
8/6.2/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. The bad quys get caught tonight.
8/6.1/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
8/6/02 - CHICK HEARN: 1916-2002 died last night, and the media is full of it. www.laexaminer.com/ has corrections and links at "CHICK INVENTED THE LANGUAGE OF BASKETBALL" and others.
8/5.3/02 - The new morning show, "M&M in the Morning," I heard the first show today. Friday was a try out. Mark does most of the talking, and Larry, for now, just does the news. I want more Larry. They do plan to cover news, topics, have guests, and listener call-ins, but they're still working on the format. Bill Simon, running for CA governor, was on and may be on every week. Mark did drift into happy-talk which puts me to sleep. It's on weekdays, 6-9a, KRLA 870 AM, with Mark Larson and Larry Marino. Check Mark's site at www.marklarson.com/ for previews?, recaps, streaming?, etc. But, Bill Handel on KFI is still about the best in the morning.
8/5.2/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM.
8/5.1/02 - Larry King, Mon-Fri, 8-9p, KFWB 980 AM.

8/3.7/02 - Measurecast top 25 casters. They don't list an L.A. outlet this week, and they only list one news/talk, one sports talk, three classical, and others. See www.measurecast.com/.
8/3.6/02 - Inside Radio merges into Clear Channel?. "All Access reported today that Inside Radio -- long a critic of Clear Channel -- is merging with M Street Daily, which is partially-owned by Clear Channel. CC gets Inside Radio's daily fax, daily emails, website, and the "Who Owns What" publication. Starting Monday, Inside Radio will be known as "Inside Radio From M Street." Tip from and more at groups.msn.com/losangelesradio/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=1&ID_Message=226. 8/3.5/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. Comedy tonight.
8/3.4/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:
8/3.3/02 - Mark Larson of San Diego in L.A. "Mark Larson brings personal values to an expanded Southern California talk show...Come Monday, Larson is giving up his 3-to-4 p.m. weekday "Larson Live!" on KCBQ and moving it to 6 to 9 a.m. weekdays. His three-hour stint will blanket all of Southern California, thanks to KRLA/AM 870 in Los Angeles and KRLH/AM 590 in Riverside/San Bernardino simultaneously airing Larson's show along with KCBQ. More at www.signonsandiego.com/news/features/20020802-9999_1c2larson.html. Related to 8/3/02 Flash. Moreover.com's tip.
8/3.2/02 - "Los Angeles Radio's Noisy Newsmakers. When Gov. Gray Davis of California signed legislation regulating automotive greenhouse gas emissions, the phone lines in his office lit up and the press office shut down. Angry and frustrated, a press officer, Steve Maviglio, responded by redirecting the calls to the newsroom of KFI-AM in Los Angeles." KFI and Davis don't play well together which may be why Davis didn't give KFI credit for helping rescue the two girls. And, why didn't the LAT cover this? - but they do have a KFI-related story at www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-media2aug02005054.story?null.
8/3.1/02 - ""The Car Nut," Steve Parker, is back to work after surgery." Steve had a car show in L.A. then went to the desert. See www.radiodailynews.com/steveparker.htm. Larry's tip.
8/3/02 - Larry Marino returns. "...Radio talk station KRLA-AM (870) will unveil a new program in the weekday 6-9 a.m. slot Monday, "M&M in the Morning," hosted by Mike Larson and Larry Marino." From www.calendarlive.com/top/1,1419,L-LATimes-Calendar-X!ArticleDetail-67985,00.html. Larry has done about the best local L.A. coverage in the past.
8/2.5/02 - "The Real Reason Why The RIAA Wants To Take Out The Webcasters. So that that the record labels can run Internet Radio THEMSELVES!!! I knew it, they want a monopoly on Internet radio. Even if you don't think it is a monopoly, it still one trade group in control more/less. That being the Record Labels. OK People we have something to go on." Comment on ctcr bb.
8/2.4/02 - KNX Drama Hour, daily, 9-10p, KNX 1070 AM. Two good drama series tonight.
8/2.3/02 - LA Weekly's program picks for today:

"KSDO (1130 AM San Diego at www.ksdo.com/) plays the Kim Komando show on Saturdays from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Although her knowledge of computers is poor, she is worth listening to if you happen to be online and need background chatter."
"I heard the broadcast last Saturday. However, from what I understand, other stations who syndicate this program usually stop streaming when she is on the air due to her request. Hence, this online broadcast may be pulled at any time."
