Between the Tears

Did I hear you say you love me,

Or did I hear you say good bye?

Did I hear you say you'd hold me,

Or did you say you wouldn't try?

It's so hard to tell the difference

Between the tears.

You once said I'm your future,

But now I guess I am your past.

'Cause foolish disagreements

Broke a love we thought would last.

We even lost our friendship

'Cause words got ugly in the end;

And a bond that wouldn't falter

Is now one we can not mend.

Did you hear me say I'll miss you,

As you turned and walked away?

Or pretend you didn't notice,

Cause you hurt me so that day.

I guess I'll always miss you.

In my day there's empty time.

I won't even try to fill it,

'Cause it once was yours and mine.

I will think of you at midday;

Maybe dream of you at night.

In my dream we're still together,

But you're gone by morning's light.

I know I won't forget you

Since you've left and gone away;

And I know I'll always wonder,

"Could I have made you want to stay?"

What we had was very special,

Something not too many share;

And the heartache that has lingered

On some days is hard to bear.

I could have never left you.

It was you who turned away;

And broke my heart in little pieces;

It was the price I had to pay.

I think about that moment.

I think about that time.

And I wonder, "Is love worth it

To a fragile heart like mine?"

Once again my heart is broken,

And it took so long to mend;

And I'll dream the dream of dreamers

That never comes true in the end.

Did you say you once were happy?

Or did you just pretend?

Then use it as a reason

To leave me in the end.

It's so hard to tell the difference

Between the tears.
