DEER RESISTENT PERENNIALS
If hungry enough, the deer will eat any plant. The following are
plants they will ignore if other food sources are nearby.
BIGROOT CRANESBILL (GERANIUM MACRORRHIZUM 'INGWERSEN'S VARIETY) YUGOSLAVIA
Also known as hardy geraniums, cranesbills will bloom from May and
well into June. Pink flowers, aromatic leaves and the ability to crowd
out weeds, makes cranesbills a favorite. Will grow in any light and
in any soil conditions. Generally pest and disease free as well. A
perfect plant for the difficult spot.
LENTEN ROSE (HELLEBORUS) BULGARIA TO TURKEY
Blooms March to May with white to reddish purple flowers and grows
to 18 inches high x24 inches wide. Requires partial to full shade and
rich, loose, well-drained soil. Prefers slightly alkaline soil, add
ground limestone if needed. Once established, lenten rose, is basically
carefree; pest and disease free, they also do not need cutting back or
deadheading. Propagates easily from seeds, or division in early spring.
BEARDED IRIS (IRIS 'BEVERLY SILLS') HYBRIDIZED FROM MANY SPECIES
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Coral pink blooms from
May to June. Six weeks after blooms are gone, dig up the rhizomes.
Break or cut off new pieces, with leaves attached. Trim leaves back
to a few inches and replant shallowly 12 inches apart.
RED HOT POKER(KNIPHOFIA 'ROYAL STANDARD') S.AFRICA
Also known a torch lily, blooms July to September and can reach
3 to 4 feet high x 3 to 4 feet wide. Needs full sun and well-drained
moist soil. Besides the size, the yellow and bright red spike type
flowers make this a dramatic addition. Can be divided in fall, but for
best blooms leave alone.
DAFFODIL (NARCISSUS 'ICE FOLLIES') EUROPE AND AFRICA
This variety won the American Daffodil Society's top award in 1992
The white and yellow flowers bloom from April to May, reaching 16 to 18
inches high x 6 to 18 inches wide. Plant in full sun to partial shade.
Ideal location is under deciduous trees in good average, well-drained
garden soil. Adding compost and bonemeal when planting will increase
blooms. Unlike other bulbs, deer won't eat the tops and gophers won't
eat the bulbs. After blooming, do not remove leaves until entirely
brown.
JERUSALEM SAGE (PHLOMIS RUSSELIANA) TURKEY AND SYRIA
With large, woolly, and gray-green leaves shading the ground,
jerusalem sage makes an ideal weed-free ground cover. Soft yellow
flowers bloom from June to September. Plant in full sun to light
shade(particularly in the South or California). You may propagate
by division in the spring, rooting stem cuttings or seeds. New
plants should be placed 18 inches apart.
ORNAMENTAL RHUBARB (RHEUM PALMATUM 'ATROSANGUINEUM') CHINA
One of the largest perennials, these can reach 6 to 8 feet high
x 5 to 6 feet wide. The 3 foot red-purple leaves gradually turn to
mostly green. In late May, the flowerstalk may reach 6 to 8 feet in
height with large bunches of small red-pink flowers. Plant in full sun
or partial shade in the South, also keep well watered during the hot
months and add a rich compost each spring for best results. May be
divided in spring or fall.
ADAM'S-NEEDLE (YUCCA FILAMENTOSA) EASTERN UNITED STATES
Blooms July to August, sends up a tall flowerstalk with white,
fragrant, bell-shaped flowers. Likes full sun and dry, sandy soil.
Grows 3 to 5 feet high x 3 to 4 feet wide. Remove offshoots in spring
of fall and space 24 inches apart. You can divide the roots, but prove
difficult because of the tough roots. Nice plant for rock gardens.
