Why Dragons I hear
you ask?
Why not!
The Dragon is a most fascinating and mysterious creature. Everyone
knows what a dragon is Right?? a fierce, flame breathing, virgin eating,
reptilian monster.
Fierce - yes, flame breathing - most definatly, virgin eating - well
who can say, reptilian monster - I dont think so!
The problem I think lies in mans' conception of this unique creature,
for we humans have always worked on the principle - "If we dont understand
it, we fear it, and if we fear it, we kill it" this then is the basis
for our relationship with the Dragon.
From as far back as 2000bc the dragon has been used to symbolise destruction
and evil, in an ancient Mesopotamian epic, the godess Tiamat was personified
as a dragonlike creature of the oceans, who headed the hordes of evil and
chaos.
In the sacred writings of the Hebrews the dragon frequently represents
death and evil
Christian art portrays the dragon as a symbol of sin.
There are those however, who see with more benevolant eyes.
The Greeks and Romans believed that the Dragons held the key to great
knowledge and had the ability to understand and teach humans the secrets
of the earth, they saw them as protectors, allies. The Romans carried emblems
of Dragons on their shields when they went into battle.
The Norsemen carved likenesses of Dragons on the prows of their longships.
To the Celts, the dragon was a symbol of sovereignty and wisdom.
So which is the true nature of the beast? Are they real, do they exist?
Look into your heart and decide for yourself. Do you believe or not? |
