Douglas S. Irvine, 74 Douglas S. Irvine of Hainsville died Monday, July 17, 2000 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital, Brockville. He was 74. Mr. Irvine was born in Hainsville on May 6, 1926 to Oliver Irvine and Enid Irvine (nee MacGregor), who predeceased him. He was a lifetime resident of the Hainsville area and a member of St. John's Anglican Church, Iroquois. He was also a member of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture. Mr. Irvine is also survived by a brother, Archie (Doris) of Prescott, sisters Stella Shantz of Cambridge and Clara (Eldon) Francis of Brockville, and nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a sister, Alice White, and brothers Harold and Don. Mr. Irvine enjoyed sports and going to events such as community fairs and auctions, and he was well known for his humour and joy for life. He had a lifelong interest in municipal politics and township affairs. Visitation was held at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, on July 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service was held July 21 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. Pat Martin officiating. Interment was at St. John's Anglican Cemetery, Iroquois. The pallbearers were Paul Irvine, Michael White, Malcolm Shantz, Ronald Shantz, Richard Shantz and Irv Francis. Denzil Locke, 79 Denzil Locke, a resident of 390 James St. W., Prescott for 50 years, died Sept. 7, 2000 at Brockville General Hospital. He was 79. He was born March 30, 1921 at Brinston to Ralph Locke and Jennie Johnson, who predeceased him. He married Elfriede (Susie) Locke, nee Bordt, Dec. 16, 1987 at St. Paul's United Church, Prescott. Most noticeable of his many accomplishments was his devotion to his family, community and church. Mr. Locke had a successful business career as president of Cummings-Cossitt Insurance, having worked in the insurance business for more than 30 years. He retired in 1986. Mr. Locke was raised in Brinston Corners and graduated from Iroquois High School. He enlisted in the Air Force and was a veteran of WWII. He belonged to many community organizations, including the Oddfellows lodge, Masons and Shriners. He participated in Shrine motorcycle parades for many years. Recently he belonged to local square dancing groups and was treasurer at the Prescott Lawn Bowling Club. Mr. Locke was an avid boater and maintained a cottage east of Prescott near the lighthouse for more than 40 years. Mr. Locke enjoyed travelling and had been around the globe several times. He particularly enjoyed travelling by motor home and spent many winters in Florida. He was also a private pilot and had been president of the Brockville flying club. As well, he was a police commissioner in Prescott and a Justice of the Peace. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church. Mr. Locke is survived by his wife Susie, a son Alan (Ruth); stepchildren Roswitha (Mrs. Kenneth Lipman), Michael Bordt (Lis) and Martin Bordt; grandchildren Alexis, Jordan, Devin, Mila, Dani and Andy; a brother Keith (Lena); sister Deltra Frankel and sister-in-law Audrey Locke. He was predeceased by his first wife, Marian Banford, and a brother, Dr. Claire Locke. Visitation was held at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, Sept. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Sept. 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service was held Sept. 10 at 3:30 p.m. at St. Paul's United Church. A committal service followed at Sandy Hill Cemetery. The pallbearers were Alan Locke, Michael and Martin Bordt, Jordan Lipman, Alex and John Banford and Bert Headrick. Clifford William James Seeley, 76 Clifford William James Seeley, 1563 County Rd. 2 in Augusta Township, died Aug. 26, 2000 at his home. He was 76. He was born June 10, 1924 in Matilda Township to Alzon Seeley and Gertrude Stone, who predeceased him. Mr. Seeley is survived by his wife, Irene Ilda Marion Seeley (nee McHaffie), whom he married Sept. 3, 1947 in Iroquois. Mr. Seeley was a past Grand Master of the Ontario Independent Order of Oddfellows '80-82. He and his wife had travelled extensively throughout Ontario and the United States in this capacity. Mr. Seeley was a member of the Canadian Memorial Committee of the Sovereign Grand Lodge, and he also initiated the Oddfellows Pilgrimage for Youth for this district in 1964. He was an active member of St. Paul's United Church, Prescott, and served on numerous committees in earlier years. During the 1960s, he served as a school trustee. He loved to play euchre and organized a number of games for the Prescott IOOF. He was the owner and operator of Seeley Bus Lines until 1976. Mr. Seeley is also survived by daughters Evelyn (Mrs. Terry Relyea) and Joyce Seeley and her husband George Martin; a son Brian and his wife Dorothy; grandchildren Diane Relyea and Gregory Martin; sisters Arlean Bradford, Fae Brinston and Leaola LaPorte; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Companion, and brothers Rae and Wilfred Seeley. Visitation was held at the Chris Slater Funeral Home on Aug. 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service was held in the funeral home chapel Aug. 30 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Doug Carnegie officiating. A committal service followed at Spruce Haven Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jack Goodin, Carl Gilmer, Terry Relyea, Charles Seeley, Glenn Seeley, and Garry Lewis. Jennie Ross, 80 Jennie Ross (nee Dillabough) of Mayfield Residence, Prescott, died at the Brockville General Hospital on Tuesday, July 11, 2000. She was 80. She was born in Heckston June 29, 1920, the daughter of the late Lyman and Janie (Thrasher) Dillabough. She lived in Spencerville and Ogdensburg, N.Y., and was a member of the United Church. Mrs. Ross's interests centred around her family. She enjoyed playing euchre, playing the guitar and listening to music. She was the loving mother of William (Bill) Alkerton (Joan), of Toronto, and Jannie Stephenson (Duane) of Spencerville. She was the dear grandmother of Julie Brais and her husband Allan; Louise Middlemiss and her husband Jeff; Joe and David Alkerton; and great-grandmother of Megan, Shelby and Nicole Middlemiss. Mrs. Ross is also survived by her brother, Arnold Dillabough of Prescott and sister Flossie Merkley of Iroquois. She was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph Alkerton, and her second husband, Forest Ross, brothers Percy and Ray Dillabough and sister Lillian Todd. Helen Lemaire, 84 Helen Lemaire died suddenly on Monday, July 17, 2000 at Mayfield Retirement Residence in Prescott, where she had lived for the past nine months. She was 84. She was born in Cardinal on Oct. 1, 1915 to Edward and Jane (nee Beckstead) Blair. She was a lifelong resident of the area. On Feb. 5, 1940 in St. Mark's Parish, she married William Lemaire. Mrs. Lemaire enjoyed dancing, family get-togethers, camping, bingo, reading and playing cards. She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Morrisburg and a member of the CWL for more than 58 years. She was also a past member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 48 Ladies Auxiliary. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, sisters Dorothy Smith and Winnifred Blair and brothers Charles, Matthew, William, Willis, Wilson, Wilbert and Clifford. She is survived by sons William (Barb) Lemaire of Athens, Charles (Patricia) Lemaire of Johnstown, Patrick (Lynda) Lemaire of Kingston and Mike (Patricia) Lemaire of Morrisburg. She is also survived by daughters JoAnne (Bob) Cartwright of Wasaga Beach, Mary (John) Melady of Egmondville, Lurinda (Leonard) Beckstead of Morrisburg, Alberta (Gordon) McNairn of Baltimore, Ont. and sister Katherine Colquhoun of Oshawa. Mrs. Lemaire will be sadly missed by 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. John Fredrick Jordan, 84 Iroquois resident John Fredrick Jordan died at Ottawa General Hospital on March 23, 2000. He was 84. He is survived by his wife Jean Crobar of Iroquois whom he married at her parents' home in old Iroquois in 1955. Also surviving is his brother Stan (Deltra) of RR2 Spencerville and sisters Eloda Fader (Ken) of Brockville and Beatrice Hodgin of Brockville, as well as many nieces and nephews. Mr. Jordan was predeceased by sisters Marjorie McInnes, Annie and Lillian Jordan and a brother Ernest. He was born in Matilda Township on Aug. 8, 1915 to the late Ben Jordan and Minerva Casselman. Mr. Jordan worked for 23 years as a guard at the Brockville Jail and had also been a truck driver for Dodge Construction, Empire Hanna Coal and Reynolds Coal. He had also lived at R.R. 1 Cardinal, in Manitoba and in Brockville before moving to Maple Avenue in Iroquois. He was affiliated with the United Church. A graveside service was held on March 27 at 11 a.m. at Mainsville Cemetery where interment also took place. Rev. Doug Carnegie officiated. Memorial donations to the Lung Association were appreciated. Dale Milton Barkley, 62 Dundela native Dale Milton Barkley died at his Morrisburg home on March 1, 2000. He was 62. Mr. Barkley is survived by his wife Hilda Seeley of Morrisburg and by sons Carl (Lisa) of Camden East, Ont. and Barry (Angie) of Iroquois and by daughter Donna (Steve) Bradford of Morrisburg. Also surviving are grandchildren Cole, Caylin, Peyton, Mackenzie and Emma as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Barkley is also survived by a brother, Francis of Williamsburg, by a sister, Gwen (John) Reeve of Cornwall, and by mother-in-law Stetta Seeley. He was predeceased by a brother Carl and by his parents Milton Barkley and Pearl MacMillan, to whom he was born on June 3, 1937 at Dundela. Mr. Barkley lived in Frobisher Bay, N.W.T. and in Labrador City, Labrador, where he worked for Imperial Oil before moving to Morrisburg 33 years ago. In this area, he owned the Esso station on Highway 2 as well as Barkdale Serve-a-car. He also drove bus for Casselman Bus Lines and Whitteker Bus Lines for seven years. Mr. Barkley was a dedicated member of the Morrisburg Masonic Lodge. He was affiliated with Lakeshore United Church. He enjoyed working in the bush cutting wood, walking, biking, travelling and collecting antiques. Eleanor Tutecky, 57 Long-time Prescott resident Eleanor Tutecky died at her home on Jessup Street Feb. 14, 2000. She was 57. Mrs. Tutecky is survived by daughters Cheryl (Mrs. Barry McLaughlin) of Spencerville and Dawn (Mrs. Gerry Tutecky-McDougall) of Prescott and by son John of Prescott. Also surviving are grandchildren Lindsay and Rena McLaughlin and Jessica and Jared McDougall as well as brothers Charlie (Lois) Piche of Brockville and Robert (Kathy) Piche of Kemptville. Mrs. Tutecky is also survived by sisters Hilda Belleville and Marion Hobbs-Preston (Clifford Preston), all of Prescott, and Barbara (Ralph) Sayeau of Spencerville. She was predeceased by her husband John Tutecky, by a brother Raymon Piche and by her parents Leon Piche and Eleanor Brooks to whom she was born Sept. 5, 1942 at Ottawa. Mrs. Tutecky was a member of the Prescott branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. She enjoyed playing darts and bingo. She worked as a tow motor operator at Sommerville Belkin in Brockville but had retired due to her health. Joe Roode, 66 Lifetime resident of the Cardinal area Joe Roode died at Winchester Hospital on Thursday, March 30, 2000. He was 66. He is survived by his wife Shirley (Magee) Roode whom he married on Nov. 10, 1953 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Cardinal. Also surviving are sons Rick (Lyn) of RR3 Prescott, Mark (Kandy) of RR4 Prescott and Joe (JoAnn) of Cardinal and daughters Bonnie (Bob) Wright of Cardinal, Angie (Roger) Massey of Lynn and Jenny (Barry) Crowder of RR2 Brinston. Mr. Roode is also survived by brothers Pat (Marilyn) of RR1 Morrisburg and Francis "Nig" (Janice) of Cardinal as well as by sisters Patsy (Bob) Andress of Brockville, Mary (Jerry) Miller of Cardinal and Ann (Bob) Bradford of Cardinal. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Danny and Angus. He was born in Cardinal on March 30, 1934 to the late Harry Roode and Jenny (Emburgh) Roode. He spent his lifetime in the Cardinal area and worked 45 years at Canada Starch and Best Foods. He initially worked as an operator in various departments with Canada Starch then as a foreman in the oil refinery at Best Foods. He served as president of the plant union for a number of years during the 1960s. Mr. Roode was a former member of the Cardinal Fish and Game Club and an associate member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 97 in Prescott. He served as coach of the Cardinal Old Timers Hockey Club for a number of years. He liked to play pool and he enjoyed curling. In his early years he enjoyed playing hockey and baseball. Mr. Roode was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be sadly missed by all who knew him and who worked with him. He was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church. Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Cardinal on April 2. Janna Blok, 81 Morrisburg resident Janna Blok died at St. Lawrence Lodge in Brockville on March 28, 2000. She was 81. She is survived by sons Garry (Judy) of Iroquois, Keith (Donna) of Cowichan, B.C., John of Brockville and Jim (Michelle) of Waskatenau, Alberta. Also surviving are daughters Chris Martel (Ken O'Grady) of Ottawa, Clara Blok of Brockville, Jennie (Lloyd) Hall of Iroquois, Enid (Tom) Garswood of Johnstown, Betty (Fern) Byrd of Brockville and Tina (Donald) Sypes of RR1 Morrisburg. She is also survived by 35 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Blok was predeceased by her husband Harm Blok whom she married on June 28, 1939 in the Netherlands and by brothers Lambert and Williem and sister Jantje. She was born on Aug. 7, 1918 in Emmercompasqum, Drente to the late Jan Dyks and Geessien Dyks (nee Potse). In 1951 she emigrated to Canada with her husband and seven young children. They lived in Philipsville, Westport and Mallorytown before purchasing a farm in the Boucks Hill area. They raised their family on the farm. In the early 1970s they sold the farm and moved to Morrisburg where Mrs. Blok lived until health problems forced her to move to St. Lawrence Lodge in 1998. Mrs. Blok was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church in Morrisburg. She was an excellent cook and loved to do crafts and garden. Charles Jackson, 76 Lifelong Matilda Township resident Charles Jackson died at Winchester District Hospital on March 17, 2000. He was 76. He was born in the township on Aug. 12, 1923 to the late John Jackson and Estella Jackson (nee Cass). He worked as a transport driver for Russ Holmes Transport for a number of years before going to work at Caldwell Linen Mills. He worked there for many years until his retirement in 1988. Mr. Jackson loved to fly radio-controlled model airplanes and was a member of the Cornwall Aero-Modellers Flying Club. He had a great love of gardening and his "green thumb" enabled him to grow a garden that produced a multitude of delicious vegetables and many beautiful flowers. Mr. Jackson enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, whether it be to share a joke with them, to show them one of his special magic tricks or to draw them a picture using his excellent artistic skills. When he was younger, Mr. Jackson enjoyed fishing. As he got older, he enjoyed visiting with his many friends at the local coffee shops. Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife Evelyn Jackson (nee Lapier) whom he married on Aug. 12, 1950 at Shanly. Also surviving are son Allen of Dixons Corners and daughters Carol (Terry) Joice of Sandy Mountain and Vicky (Brian) LaFave of Cardinal. Mr. Jackson is also survived by brothers Beverly (Ruth) of Lombardy and Warren (Vivian) of Winchester, sisters Lula McKnight of Shawville, Mabel Crowder of Winchester and Muriel Barkley of Winchester, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Lucinda Thomas and Myrtle Jackson and by brothers Tom and Minard. A private family service was held at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Williamsburg on Sunday, March 19 at 2 p.m. Rev. Anita Goulet officiated. Interment was at Dundela Cemetery. Russell Gordon Hanna, 85 Cardinal resident Russell Gordon Hanna died at the Winchester District Hospital on April 3, 2000. He was 85. Mr. Hanna is survived by son Stuart (Gail) Hanna and daughters Judith (Ralph) St. Pierre and Carol (Tom) Bell, as well as by stepson Barry (Linda) Lampson. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, sisters Hazel Grant and Mildred (Merton) Burchill, brother-in-law Donald Fretwell and sister-in-law Frances Hanna. Mr. Hanna was predeceased by first wife Katherine Savor of Cardinal and by his second wife Marcella Lampson. He was also predeceased by brother Ernest Hanna and sister Dorothy Fretwell, as well as by parents Leonard Hanna and Phoebe Typhair, to whom he was born on Oct. 15, 1914 at Crystal Rock. Mr. Hanna worked as a labourer at Casco in Cardinal. His main hobby was racing horses. No visitation was held. The funeral service was held in the chapel of the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott on April 5 at 2 p.m. Rev. Blair Paterson officiated. A committal service was held at Roselawn Memorial Gardens where interment also took place. Mary Doris Tennant, 75 Morrisburg resident Mary Doris Tennant died at Winchester Hospital on Monday, Jan. 17, 2000. She was 75. Mrs. Tennant is survived by daughters Nancy Lawlor of Kingston, Judy Tennant of Ottawa, and by son Jim (Cheryl) of Prescott. Also surviving are grandchildren Jesse and Cody Lawlor of Kingston and Kyle and Kaili Tennant of Prescott. She will be missed by numerous relatives and many dear friends. Mrs. Tennant was predeceased by her daughter Cindy, brother Patrick Coligan, and her parents Wilfred Thomas Coligan and Doris Cecilia Kavanaugh, to whom she was born in Morrisburg on Aug. 26, 1924. She lived in Mariatown before returning to Morrisburg 10 years ago. Mrs. Tennant worked as a stenographer for a lumber company. Friends were received at the Parker Funeral Home in Morrisburg on Jan. 19 and 20. Funeral mass was celebrated at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church on Friday, Jan. 21 at 1:30 p.m. Fathers David Pope and Tim Shea presided. Cremation followed. Interment was at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery in Morrisburg. The pallbearers were Dale Crowder, Tom Coligan, Steve Coligan, Peter Coligan, Tony Toonders and Gerard Smits. Lyman D. 'Bud' Beatty, 68 Lyman D. "Bud" Beatty, well-known entrepreneur in this area, died at the Heart Institute in Ottawa on Jan. 1, 2000. He was in his 69th year. "Bud" was born in Edwardsburgh Township on May 2, 1931 to the late William Beatty and the late Effie Hanna. He was raised and educated in Edwardsburgh. He started work in Prescott delivering groceries then went on to sell insurance for 13 years but didn't like the routine of office work. In 1960 he bought his first school bus and over 40 years expanded his business to include a fleet of buses. Mr. Beatty's business and his Sunday afternoon drives were his favourite past-times. Mr. Beatty was a past member of the Prescott Rotary Club and was also an Ontario Provincial Police auxiliary officer. For many years, he negotiated on behalf of the school bus owners' association with the school board to renew contracts. Mr. Beatty is survived by his companion Betty Middlemiss and by sons Steven (Karen) of R.R.#5 Spencerville, Thomas (Lisa) of Stirling, Ont., Jeff (Judy) of R.R.#3 Prescott and Craig (JoAnne), of North Augusta. He is also survived by grandchildren Andrew, Amanda, Kaitlyn, Jordan, Jenna, Amy, Katie, Sara, Shanly, Stephanie, Billy and Jason as well as by Edna Hanna (Baker) Beatty of Brockville. Mr. Beatty was predeceased by sisters Edna Smith, Edith Hibbett and Helen Ross and brother Richard Beatty. Visitation was held at the Grant Brown Funeral Home ­ MacDonald Chapel, Dibble Street, Prescott on Jan. 3. Funeral services were held in the chapel of the funeral home on Jan. 4 at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Gerry Ring of St. John's Anglican Church in Prescott officiated. Interment was at Sandy Hill Cemetery in Prescott. Jack Gladstone, 63 CARDINAL ­ John (Jack) Clyde Gladstone passed away Friday, May 14, 1999 in his 63rd year following a long fight with cancer. He was born Jan. 7, 1936 to Irene Wood and the late Clyde Gladstone. He was predeceased by brother Frank Gladstone and sisters Nell Poaps and Eunice O'Brien. He is survived by one brother Lanny Gladstone. On Sept. 29, 1956, Mr. Gladstone married Ann Mack. The couple had four daughters, Lynn and Lewis Beach, of Prescott, Peggy and Fred Taylor, of Cardinal, Michelle and Stephen Riddell, of Cardinal, and Christine and Brad Windsor, of Cardinal and grandchildren Marcus and Kevin Beach, Amber Windsor, Guin and Keith Taylor and Matthew Riddell. On Monday, May 17, 1999 funeral services were held at the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home, in Cardinal. The service was performed by Father Powell with Father Arsenault speaking a beautiful homily. Kevin Beach sang a solo entitled "Be Not Afraid". David and Darren Black, nephews of Jack, dedicated a wonderful eulogy. Jack was employed at the Canada Starch Co. Ltd. for 43 years before retiring in 1996. He was an active Union 483 member serving as vice president for several years. Jack was president of the Casco Credit Union for many years. He served as a Cardinal Councillor and was an active Legion Branch 105 member. Jack's wife Ann and his daughters were his main love. His sons-in-law were very special to him and his grandchildren were important treasures. He spent a lot of precious time with them camping, boating, watching them in sports, plays and concerts. Jack will be missed by so many friends and family but by no one more than his wife, Ann. Donations went to the Cancer Society. - The Prescott Journal, May 26, 1999.

James (O.J.) Murphy, 61 Iroquois resident James B (O.J.) Murphy died suddenly at his home on Dec. 14, 1999. He was 61. Mr. Murphy spent his lifetime in this area and worked for the Department of Highways at its Morrisburg base. He is survived by his wife Joyce Murphy and by sons Pat (Diane), Jim (Shirley), Jeff (Debbie), Steven (Linda) and Tim (Wendy), all of Iroquois. Also surviving are brothers Mike of Stirling and Allan of Cornwall, as well as sisters Patricia of Winchester, Shirley of Morrisburg, Margaret of Old Chelsea, Que. and Catherine of Port Elgin. Mr. Murphy is also survived by 10 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Don, and a sister, Jean, as well as by his parents Patrick Murphy and Dorothy McNaughton, to whom he was born on April 4, 1938 at Morrisburg. A private family service was held at O.J.'s home on Friday, Dec. 17. Donations to the Winchester District Hospital are appreciated. Ralph James Millar, 83 Edwardsburgh Township native Ralph James Millar died at Winchester District Hospital on Dec. 16, 1999. He was 83. Mr. Millar was born in the township on Nov. 11, 1916 to the late William Millar and Edith Pitt. He lived in Winchester for 17 years before his death and had lived in Shanly prior to that. He was a member of Wesleyan Methodist Church in Inkerman. Mr. Millar was a retired farmer and had also worked at carpentry and painting. He had an egg route and drove a milk truck. His family and his farm were his life. Mr. Millar is survived by his wife, Stella Spearman, whom he married at her parents' home near Inkerman on June 7, 1947. He is also survived by his son Elwyn (Linda) of RR4 Spencerville and his daughter Bonnie (R. McIntyre) of Stirling, as well as by sister-in-law Evelyn Millar of Brockville. He was predeceased by brothers Acil and Cecil. Friends called at the Marsden McLaughin Funeral Home in Cardinal on Dec. 17. The funeral was held at Wesleyan Methodist Church in Inkerman on Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. Rev. J. Warrington officiated. Interment was at Shanly Cemetery. Dorothy Merrill, 85 Dorothy Adeline Merrill, died at the Winchester Hospital on Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999. She was 85. She was born in Williamsburg Township on June 12, 1914 to the late Charles Marselis and Edith Cyle. She lived her entire life in and around the Morrisburg area, most recently at the Hartford Home in that town. She was a former tour guide at the Crysler Hall. Mrs. Merrill was predeceased by her husband Dalton Merrill as well as by a son Stephen Merrill and a sister Margaret McIntyre. She is survived by daughter Catharine (Gordon) Flumerfelt of Edmonton and by daughter-in-law Judy Merrill of Rockport as well as by grandchildren David and Patricia, and two nieces and several nephews. Friends called at the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home in Iroquois on Dec. 20. Monica Hitchinson, 69 Cardinal resident Monica Bernadette Hitchinson died at her Dundas Street home on Nov. 28, 1999 after a six-month-long illness. She was 69. She is survived by her husband Edmund Hitchinson, whom she married in Montreal on April 11, 1964. Also surviving is son Stephen (Judy), daughters Maureen and Pamela, and grandchildren Jeff and David Edmund and Ashley Dawn, as well as sister Teresa Cain. Mrs. Hitchinson was predeceased by her parents Michael and Catherine Cain, to whom she was born on April 29, 1930 in Montreal. She had lived in Montreal and Iroquois before moving to Cardinal two years ago. Mrs. Hitchinson was as a housewife. She was affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 370 Iroquois. On Saturday, Dec. 4, friends called at the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home in Cardinal, where the funeral was also held. Cremation followed. Lorraine Breau-Henophy 69 Iroquois resident Lorraine Breau-Henophy died at Winchester and District Memorial Hospital on Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999. She was 69. She is survived by her husband Gerald Henophy, step-sons Michael of Edmonton and Kevin of Arnprior, brothers Adrian, Lawrence, Paul, Raymond, Albert and Rodney, and sisters Lise Tinling, Valeda Hinds, Jeannine Anthony and Jackie Holder. Also surviving are step-grandchildren Cody and Scott and many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Mrs. Henophy was predeceased by a brother Leo and by her parents, Adrian and Mary Jean Breau, to whom she was born on Oct. 26, 1930 at Verdun, Que. Mrs. Henophy worked as a supervisor with Northern Electric. Funeral arrangements were in the care of the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home in Iroquois. Ralph Guy, 75 A gloom was cast over the community and surrounding area when it was made known that a beloved husband, brother, friend and relative, the late Ralph Guy, had passed on to the great beyond to give an account of the deeds done on this earth and get his reward for faithful services. The deceased succumbed after an illness of heart failure at Brockville General Hospital. All that skilled medical aid and willing hands of loved ones was of no avail. He passed away Nov. 19, 1999. The deceased was born April 9, 1924 at Inkerman, Ontario to the late John and Iva Guy (nee Fawcett). He was raised in Inkerman and as a young man he helped his dad on the farm. In later years, he worked as a machine operator in the construction industry. He married Geraldine (Droppo) on Sept. 18, 1948 and was a most devoted husband. His hobbies were fishing, hunting and gardening. He took great comfort and joy in his home and getting together with family and friends. He is survived by his wife Geraldine and will be fondly remembered by brother Charles, his wife Kay and several nieces and nephews, Visitation was held Sunday evening and Monday afternoon and evening. A service of remembrance was held on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott. The service was conducted by Rev. Blair Paterson of the United Church of Prescott and Rev. Stuart Marples of the Wesleyan Church in Brockville. The soloist, Ralph's niece Cathy Hamilton, sang "Amazing Grace," and the eulogy was given by Robert Thomas. The acting pallbearers were Don Guy, Ray Guy, Wm. Calvin Droppo, Owen Alguire, Howard Fortier and Hugh Fawcett. The honourary pallbearers were Allison Fawcett, Howard Guy and Joe Dworskek. A committal service was at Maple Ridge Cemetery, Chesterville, Ont. Nov. 23 at 1:30 p.m. The Inkerman United Church Women provided the luncheon at the Inkerman Church. The many floral arrangements and donations to the Ottawa Heart Institute were evidence of the high esteem in which he was held. Farewell Ralph, you have left us, No more with us here to dwell. God has sent to thee a message, Bade thee haste where all is well. The family circle now is broken, The frailest link has been removed. At Heaven's gate we hope to meet thee, If to God we faithful prove. Our home is sad, our hearts are lonely, The precious voice we loved is still. Gerald Winton Arthurs, 80 Morrisburg resident Gerald Winton Arthurs died in Winchester Hospital on Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999 after a brief stay in the hospital. He was 80. He was born on January 9, 1919 in Ottawa to the late James Arthurs and Johanna Arthurs (nee George). He was a grandson of Senator James Arthurs of Parry Sound. Mr. Arthurs had lived in Parry Sound, Prescott and Toronto before settling in Morrisburg 25 years ago. Mr. Arthurs spent 33 years as a civil servant with the Ontario provincial government. During his career, he spent nine years at Osgoode Hall and four years with the Centennial Planning Committee as assistant director. The rest of his career was spent as marketing and communications director for the St. Lawrence Parks Commission. He was a former member of the Prescott Masonic Lodge, the Morrisburg Curling Club and the Canadian Club Quarter Century Club. He was affiliated with Knox Presbyterian church. On Jan. 9, 1943, he married Vivian Arthurs (nee Lawrence) at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Manse in Prescott. Mr. Arthurs is survived by his wife as well as by his daughters Patricia (Bruce) Campbell of Ottawa and Wendy (Peter) MacGregor of Morrisburg. He will also be missed by his grandchildren Jennifer, Jonathon and Jordan, as well as by his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Jim, Monty, Kenneth, Ralph, Ted and John and by sisters Patricia Knapp, Francis Labrie and Kathryn Ann O'Connell. During his 18 years of retirement, Mr. Arthurs spent many hours at the hockey rink and baseball diamond cheering for his grandsons. He enjoyed many Florida vacations with his wife and best friend Vivian. Mr. Arthurs was a devoted family man. Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Williamsburg on Nov. 30. Thomas McGinn, 86 Thomas Joseph (Tom) McGinn of Amherstview, Ontario died Oct. 21, 1999 at the Helen Henderson Care Centre. He was 86. He was born on Jan. 30, 1913 in the Matilda Township to the late Denver McGinn and Isma Snob. He worked for the Seaway Authority and had lived in Iroquois and Montreal. He was affiliated with the Catholic church. He is survived by his son Mike (Vicki) McGinn of Odessa and daughters Nancy (Ian) Golding of Oshawa and Rosanne (Larry) Barkley of Leduc, Alta. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews and his grandchildren Kristie and Sarah McGinn, Diane (Mitch) Flamin, David (Krista) Golding, Ed Golding, Elizabeth (Derek) Tompkins and Aaron Barkley. He was predeceased by his brothers, Charlie, Jim, Dan, Wilfred, and his sisters, Sarah, Katherine, and Leonore and his great-grandson Ben Flamin. Visitation was held at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Sunday, Oct. 24. Memorial donations were to the Diabetes Association. The funeral service was held at the St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church in Iroquois on Monday, Oct. 25. Rev. David Pope officiated. Cremated remains were interred at St. Ann's Cemetery, Dixon's Corners. Reginald Farmer, 76 Reginald (Reg) Farmer of Iroquois, Ont. died Oct. 21, 1999 at Winchester Memorial Hospital after a two-year illness. He was 76. He was born Jan. 15, 1923 in Cardinal, Ont. to the late Hubert and Flossie (Gathier) Farmer. He worked as a Lab Technician at Casco and lived in Iroquois and Cardinal all his life. He was affiliated with the Anglican church and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 370 in Iroquois. He also served overseas in Italy, Sicily and Holland. He was predeceased by his brothers Charlie, Paul, Bud and son-in-law Randy Hooke. He is survived by his wife, Ann (Cameron), whom he married on Dec. 15, 1998 in Iroquois. Also surviving are his son Rick (Nancy) Farmer of Johnstown and daughter Johanne Hooke of Iroquois, step-children Jim (Sue) Daw of Cambridge, Nancy (Wally) Marchand of Renfrew, Ron (Sharon) Daw of Ottawa, and Kathy (André) Thiverge of Stittsville. Also surviving are his brothers Gordon (Pauline) of Cardinal, Dave (Vern) of Johnstown and Bob (Betty) of Prescott, as well as his sisters Pearl (Doug) Cooper of Brockville, Betty Walter of Cardinal, Grace (Ron) Patterson of Cardinal, and Ivy Farmer of Iroquois. Also surviving are three grandchildren, one great-grandson and several step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Dear friend of Tamara, Reg will be missed. Douglas Conklin , 84 World War II veteran Douglas Starr Conklin died June 7, 2000 at Rosebridge Manor, Easton's Corners, at the age of 84. He had been in declining health for the past two years. Mr. Conklin lived at RR2 Prescott. He was born April 8, 1916 in Maynard to William Francis Conklin and the former Florence Ferguson and was raised and educated in the Maynard/Prescott area. He married Ruth E. Devereux in Maynard in June 1936. Mr. Conklin joined the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders in 1939 and served overseas, landing on Juno Beach in Normandy on June 6, 1944, D-Day. He attained the rank of sergeant and was highly decorated for his service during the European campaign. He served in France, Holland, Belgium and Germany until the conclusion of World War II. Following the war, he moved to Algonquin in 1946 and in 1976 relocated to the Maynard area. Mr. Conklin was a farmer and Township of Augusta road superintendent. He retired in 1977 after 25 years of service, then worked part-time in a calcium chloride business, retiring from that in 1998. He was a member of Victoria United Church in Maynard. Mr. Conklin was also a member of several Eastern Ontario road superintendent associations; the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 96 for 30 years; the South Nation Conservation Authority for 15 years; and the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders Association for 54 years. He had a special place in his heart for his family and his grandchildren. Mr. Conklin was predeceased by his parents, his wife Ruth, brothers Howard and James Conklin and sisters Gladys in childhood and Marion. He is survived by daughter Patricia Richardson (Merle) of Maynard; son Franklin R. Conklin (Betty) of Maynard; brother Gerald McBroom of Domville; sister Gladys Whitehorne (James) of Eganville; and grandchildren Doug Conklin of Maynard, Lisa and Sharon Conklin and Marie Reid of Calgary, Alta., Laurie Antonakos of Lansdowne and Kerri Stone of Domville. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visitation was held June 8 at Barclay Funeral Home in Brockville. The funeral was held June 9 at 2 p.m. at Barclay Funeral Home, with Father Claude Delorme officiating. A private family service was held at Maynard Cemetery on Friday, June 23. Iva St. Pierre, 75 Iva St. Pierre of Morrisburg died suddenly Thursday, July 20, 2000 at Winchester Hospital. She was 75. Mrs. St. Pierre was born Dec. 27, 1924 in Matilda Township, and was a lifetime resident of the area. She was predeceased by her parents Clifford Sypes and Eunice Sypes (nee Kinnear). She was also predeceased by her husband, Stanley St. Pierre, whom she married May 31, 1946 in Cornwall. She is survived by sons, D'Arcy (Sherry) of Maynard and Larry (Linda) of RR 2 Iroquois; daughters, Shirley (Ronnie) Wyatt of Iroquois, Sharon (Bob) Hartle of RR 2 Iroquois, Cindy (Kevin) Ault of RR 1 Iroquois; brothers, Denzil (Nora) Sypes of Stoney Creek, Gordon (Phyllis) Sypes of Pembroke and Donald (Tina) Sypes of RR 1 Morrisburg; sisters, Lillian Ross of Ottawa, Erma (Art) Casselman of Morrisburg and Irene Black of Morrisburg; and nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by grandchildren Michelle St. Pierre, Penny Bailey, Christa St. Pierre, Tracey Sawyer, Jamie Hartle, Steven St. Pierre, Jessica Ault, Nicole St. Pierre, and by great grandchildren Davin, Tara, Tristen and Riley. Mrs. St. Pierre was predeceased by brothers Urcyl and Douglas Sypes, and by long-time friend Clifford Casselman. Mrs. St. Pierre was an avid card player who also liked to dance and play bingo. She had many friends whom she entertained at her home on a regular basis. She loved to travel and she thoroughly enjoyed trips to Florida she took with her family. Her grandchildren will especially remember her for telling them stories about the childhood experiences of their parents. Visitation was held at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, July 22, 2000 from 7 to 9 p.m. Rev. Doug Carnegie officiated at the funeral service held at the funeral home July 23 at 2 p.m. Interment was at Iroquois Point Cemetery. The pall bearers were Allan Black, Donald Black, David Black, Frank Lalonde, Peter Boersma and Garry O'Neill. Myron Dennis Beach, 72 Myron Dennis Beach, of 800 Claxton Terrace, Prescott, died July 3, 2000 at Brockville General Hospital in his 73rd year. Mr. Beach was born Feb. 29, 1928 in Hyndman, the son of Myron Beach and Laurel Colbourn. He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Marion Kirker, whom he married Nov. 5, 1955; three stepchildren, Douglas Kirker (Thelma) Duane Kirker, Lorna Ewart (Raymond) and 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and an adopted brother, Robert Beach. While living in Edmonton, Mr. Beach was the service manager for Boychuk Transportation. After retirement, the Beaches moved to Ontario, where Dennis became co-owner of a standardbred racehorse named Silent Patsea, which he enjoyed jogging. Mr. Beach was also an avid bingo player. Eva Leone Dubrule, 94 Eva Leone (Gilson) Dubrule, a long-time resident of Prescott, died at St. Lawrence Lodge Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, in her 95th year. Mrs. Dubrule was born in Roena, Matilda Township, Dec. 12, 1906, a daughter of Edith and Milton Gilson. She grew up in Iroquois, where her father was lockmaster at the locks east of Iroquois. She graduated from Ottawa Normal College in 1923. On Oct. 21, 1930 she married Joseph Gerald Dubrule (Jerry,) who was managing director of the Prescott and Ogdensburg Ferry Company. In 1931, they purchased the "Colonel Jessup" home on Dibble St. W. (now the Chris Slater Funeral Home) in Prescott. After 20 years they moved to the smaller home on the corner of James and West Streets. Mrs. Dubrule was active in sports, skiing and skating when her children were small and she later enjoyed fishing, golf and curling. She was a very active volunteer in St. Paul's United Church Guild, the Canadian Red Cross, CNIB and especially the Brockville General Hospital Wagon Shop (for more than 35 years). The river was the love of her life, swimming without permission as a child, and cruising the Thousand Islands in their yacht. She was predeceased by her husband and her son David in 1989; brothers Basil and Arnold; and by sisters Hazel Fergusson and Vera Dewar. She is survived by her daughter Geraldine of Kingston; daughter-in-law Sandra of Fredericton N.B.; and grandchildren Michael of Toronto, Robyn of Guelph and Matthew and his wife Mary Lou Pierce of McAllen, Texas. Rev. Blair Paterson conducted a memorial service in the chapel of the Chris Slater Funeral Home Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001 at 11 am. Interment followed at St. Mark's Cemetery. Maude Crowder, 89 Maude Crowder, Wellington House, Prescott, died at her residence Monday, Sept. 3, 2001. She was 89. Born May 6, 1912, in Mountain Township, she was the daughter of William Barkley and Bessie Brown. She married Cecil Crowder in 1931. Mrs. Crowder had been a member of St. John's United Church, Cardinal, the United Church Women, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 105, having served as president. She had been employed as a medical secretary for Dr. Allen and Dr. Chang. Mrs. Crowder is survived by her daughter Erma Armstrong (Fay) of RR 3 Prescott; sisters Wilda Reilly (Art) of Ottawa and Edna Barnes (Jake) of London; grandchildren LouAnn (Graham) VanCamp; Gay (Robert) Rust, Martha (Shawn) Disheau, all of Cardinal, and Tom Armstrong of Prescott; and great-grandchildren Ashley and Abby VanCamp, Sara and Justin Rust, Courtney and Lindsay Armstrong and Spencer Disheau. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; a sister Alice Tupper; and by brothers Bob and Jim Barkley. Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements. The funeral service was at Maple Ridge Cemetery Friday, Sept. 7, 2001 at 11 am, with Rev. Arlyce Schiebout officiating. Jo-Anne Elaine Ferguson, 53 Jo-Anne Elaine Ferguson, 653 James St. W., Prescott, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001 at St.Vincent de Paul Hospital, Brockville. She was 53. She was born July 13, 1948, in Brockville, the daughter of Herb Martineau and Luella Sherwood. She married Robert Ferguson July 23, 1966 at St. John's Anglican Church, Prescott. Mrs. Ferguson is survived by her husband Bob Ferguson of Prescott; sons Robert of Ottawa, Sean and Shane, both of Prescott, her mother Luella Martineau of Prescott; sisters Alberta (Mrs. Bob Byers) of Kingston; and her brother, John Martineau of Prescott. She was predeceased by her father, Herb Martineau. Her interests included knitting, playing darts, cooking and collecting teddy bears. She worked as a homemaker at home. Family and friends gathered at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, Monday, Sept. 17, from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service was in the chapel of the funeral home Sept. 18 at 2 pm, with Rev. Gerry Ring officiating. A committal service followed at Sandy Hill Cemetery. Annabel Thelma Hess, 82 Annabel Thelma Hess of Dundas Manor, Winchester, died at her residence Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001. She was 82. She was born Nov. 7, 1918 in Elma, Ont., the daughter of William Hess and Rachel Cramer. She had been a resident of Dundas Manor for 11 years, and previously resided in Mariatown. She was a member of Morrisburg Pentecostal Church. Annabel Hess is survived by her son, Mervyn Hess of Mariatown; daughters Audrey (Lloyd) Wylie of Prescott and Edna (Calvin) Zeron of Mariatown; her brother George Hess; five grandchildren: Lisa (Allan) Bailey, Michael (Donna) Zeron, Scott Zeron, Calvin Zeron Jr., Bill (Janice) Wylie; and six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents. Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, Sunday, Sept. 16 from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. The funeral took place Monday, Sept. 17 at 11 am at the funeral home, with Duncan Perry officiating. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Mariatown. The pall bearers were George Lewis, Allan Bailey, Mike Zeron and Alf Hanes. Marion Virtue Errett, 102 Marion Virtue Errett of Wellington House, Prescott, died at her residence Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001. She was 102. Mrs. Errett was born March 3, 1899 at Lanark, Ont., the daughter of John Playfair Leslie and Jennie Lind Thompson. She married Stanley Errett Nov. 14, 1923 in Kingston. She is survived by her daughter Elaine (Mrs. Leo Clark) of Kingston; her son Rev. Dr. S.L. Errett and his wife Gayda of Balderson; her sister Jean McLelland of Perth; eight grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Mrs. Errett is predeceased by her husband; daughters Connie (Mrs. Howard Standen) and Dorothy (Mrs. Lorne Connell); her sister Lilas Rodger; and her brother Edmond Leslie. Her interests included Wellington Rebekah Lodge and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. She was a charter member of Violet Chapter 206, Order of the Eastern Star, Prescott. Visitation was at Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, Thursday, Sept. 6 from 11 am to 2 pm. The funeral service followed in the chapel of the funeral home, with Rev. Ian MacLean officiating. A committal service was held at 3 pm at Sandy Hill Cemetery. The pall bearers were Philip Harpelle, Gary and Marc Grieves, and Sean, Michael and Mathew Dennee.
