Dudley Smail, 86 BRINSTON - Dudley Smail of Brinston died at Winchester Hospital July 5, 2000 following a brief illness. He was 86. He was born Oct. 28, 1913 in Brinston to Albert Smail and Maude Smail (nee Coons), who predeceased him. Mr. Smail was also predeceased by his wife, Jean Smail (nee Marcellus), whom he married May 18, 1948. Mr. Smail was a retired farmer and a lifetime resident of Brinston. He was a member of Brinston United Church and I.O.O.F. Connaught Lodge No. 440, Brinston. Mr. Smail is survived by his son, Clarke Smail of Brinston; his daughters, Barbara (John) MacMillan of Cardinal, Brenda (Rodger) Allen of Brinston, Beverly Smail of Brinston, Bernadette (Norman) MacMillan of Limoges and Bonnie (Randy) Thompson of Brinston; and a brother, Will (Evelyn) Smail of Brinston. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth; a son, Clay; sisters, Jean Payne and Greta Reid; and by brothers Orville and Harry. Mr. Smail will be sadly missed by grandchildren Tim (Robyn) MacMillan, Steven MacMillan, Kim (Richard) Holmes, Jeff (Missy) Allen, Jamie Allen, Samantha (Kurtis) Watson, Shaun MacMillan, Christopher Thompson; and by great grandchildren Katie, David and Tyler MacMillan and Clayton and Bryson Allen. Mr. Smail had been a very conscientious and dedicated caretaker of the Sprucehaven Cemetery in Brinston for the past 26 years. He enjoyed picking strawberries for all his family and friends. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and had a great love for children. Mr. Smail loved to eat ice cream and he enjoyed spending time with his family, whether it was at home or at the cottage. Etta Merkley, 88 Etta Merkley, 88, of RR 2 Iroquois, died suddenly Aug. 8, 2000 at her home. She was born July 13, 1912 in Mountain Township to Wesley Bellinger and Annie (Dutton) Bellinger who predeceased her. She was also predeceased by her husband Burnis Merkley, whom she married Dec. 21, 1935 in Iroquois. Mrs. Merkley was a lifetime resident of the area, and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Riverside Heights. She had worked for many years as a custodian at the Irena and Stampville public schools. She is survived by her sons Rowat (Ruth) of RR 2 Ingleside and Dwight (Judy Gilmour) of RR 1 Prescott; brothers Joe (Maisie) Bellinger of Brockville; sisters Geraldine Hunt of Prescott and Bertha Dodge of Montreal. Mrs. Merkley will be sadly missed by grandchildren Steven Merkley, Margaret Brown and Chris Merkley and great-grandchildren Daryon, Connery, Embyr, Cole and Jessica and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by a sister, Kathleen Bellinger and brothers George, Arnold, Stanley and Charlie. Mrs. Merkley was a hard worker and she was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. She was an excellent cook and was very talented at doing needlework projects such as knitting and crocheting. Patrick Alfred Gannon, 73 Patrick Alfred Gannon, 73, of Cardinal, died following a lengthy illness Aug. 25, 2000 at Brockville General Hospital. He was born Feb. 17, 1927 in Mountain Township, to Patrick Gannon and Elizabeth McMahon, who predeceased him. A resident of Cardinal for the past 38 years, Mr. Gannon had also resided in Spencerville and Inkerman. He was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal, and his main interests were his home and family. He had been employed as a millwright at Canada Starch, Cardinal. Mr. Gannon is survived by his wife Reta Wright, whom he married Feb. 10, 1950 at St. Daniel's Church in South Mountain. He is also survived by sons Ron (Elaine), of Carleton Place and Donald (Ann) of Brockville; daughters Kathryn (Bryan) Armstrong of Cardinal, Mary (Randy) Skinkle of RR 5 Spencerville and Margo (Bill) Anderson of Cardinal; brother Jack (Isabel) Metcalfe; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was predeceased by a brother Francis and sister Katherine Patterson. Hugh Dougald Ferguson, 79 A long-time resident of the Prescott area, Hugh Dougald Ferguson, died at Brockville General Hospital on April 15, 2000. He was 79. He was born in Avonmore, Ont. Sept. 24, 1920 to the late George Ferguson and Annie (Cameron) Ferguson. He grew up in the Avonmore area and worked on a farm. During World War II, Mr. Ferguson served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a sergeant. He later travelled across Canada, Alaska and Japan. In 1957, he started working as a millwright with DuPont Canada in Maitland. He married Helen Gladys Clark of Inkerman, and the couple settled near Prescott. Mr. Ferguson is survived by his wife, by daughter Trudy Heather Ferguson of Nepean and by sister Ethelyn Greer of Chesterville. He was predeceased by brothers Gordon, Burns and Lloyd Ferguson. Friends and family called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Dibble Street, Prescott. The funeral service was held in the chapel of the funeral home on April 18. Rev. Blair Paterson officiated. Frank Joseph Lemaire, 57 Frank Joseph Lemaire of Prescott died at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital in Brockville on May 4, 2000. He was 57. He was born in Prescott on June 13, 1942 to the late Frank J. Lemaire and Beatrice Miller. Mr. Lemaire had worked as an examiner at Prescott Finishing for 33 years. He enjoyed baseball, fishing, hunting, playing cars and watching his beloved Maple Leafs. Mr. Lemaire is survived by his wife Nancy Lemaire of Prescott and by daughters Wendy Bolton of Brinston, Christine Lemaire of Prescott, Brenda Lipinsky of Hannawa Falls, N.Y. and Bonnie Martel of Ogdensburg, N.Y. Also surviving is sister Dorothy Baker and brother Charles Lemaire as well as eight grandchildren and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by sister Barbara Halladay and by son Joseph Bushey. Visitation was held at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Dibble Street, Prescott on May 5. Leonard Donald Bruce Marriner, 64 Leonard Donald Bruce Marriner lost a courageous battle with cancer Monday, May 10, 2000, in his 65th year, at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital, Palliative Care, Brockville. Mr. Marriner was born and raised in South Mountain, the youngest son of Ernest and Dulcienne Marriner. He married Beverley Getz July 4, 1955. Mr. Marriner worked for Ontario Hydro, beginning in 1955 in Iroquois and finishing in Cornwall as a concrete inspector during the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway Project, residing in Aultsville and Mille Roches. He then moved to Winchester Springs and was in partnership with his brother-in-law Ken Morrow at Morrow's Service Centre, where he obtained his experience in automechanics. Moving to Prescott in 1962, he worked at DuPont and Hathaway, and for the past 32 years for Beck's Construction. During these years, he operated a backhoe, enjoying all the aspects of construction work, especially the people he worked with on a daily basis. Family life was very important to him, and he loved camping with his children and grandchildren. Many happy times were spent at Sharbot Lake (Black Lake) and Algonquin Provincial Park. Mr. Marriner also enjoyed sports, especially hockey and baseball, in which his children and grandchildren were involved, always remaining a loyal fan of the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Blue Jays. Mr. Marriner is survived by his wife, Beverley, and his children, Connie (Jeff) Lever of Bracebridge; Kim (Doug) Whitehorne of Kemptville; Michael (Nancyanna) of California; and Mark of Prescott. He is sadly missed by grandchildren, Lindsey, Joshua and Christine Lever; Matthew, Andrew, Kaitlyn, Alexandra and Payton Marriner; step-grandchildren Dan and Rachael Whitehorne; a brother, Stan (Laura) of Winchester; and a sister, Mabel (Ken) Morrow of Morrisburg. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Olivia Marriner; a sister, Olive Casselman; and by brothers Arthur, Walter, Gordon, Edward, Harold and Clarence. Relatives and friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, 416 Dibble St. W., Prescott, on Thursday, May 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m., and from 1 p.m. on Friday, May 12. George Murray Durant, 74 George Murray Durant died June 21, 2000 in his 75th year at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital, Brockville. He was born August 4, 1925 in Winchester. For the past several years, he had resided at 23-1871 Oxford Ave., Brockville. He had previously resided in Johnstown and Prescott and enjoyed spending winters in Florida for 10 years. Surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy Irene Brown of Brockville, and sons Kent (Susan) of Burlington, Paul (Kim) of Kingston and Mark (Lianne) of Trenton. Mr. Durant is also survived by eight grandchildren, Joshua, Alyssa, Mathew, Andrew, Bradley, Meghan, Jordan and Connor; as well as a brother Roy and sister Marguerite. Mr. Durant was predeceased by his parents, Hector and Mabel (McKercher) Durant; brothers, Allan, Don and Gerald and an infant son, Brian. Mr. Durant retired as a welder from DuPont of Canada, Maitland, 15 years ago. Funeral services were held June 23 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott. Interment was held at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Maitland, with Pastor Randy Hopkins officiating. Mansel Harold Wallace, 84 Mansel Harold Wallace, 275 Water St., Apt. 104, Prescott, died June 14, 2000 at Dundas Manor, Winchester. He was 84. Mr. Wallace was born Aug. 15, 1915 in Pleasant Valley to Robert Wallace and Elizabeth Gilmer, who predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Marie Wallace of Prescott, whom he married Sept. 15, 1953. He is also survived by his sisters, Dorothy Moore and Nelda Stinson, both of Prescott, and by several nieces and nephews. Mr. Wallace was predeceased by his brothers, Kenneth and Herb. Mr. Wallace enjoyed playing euchre and was the owner and operator of a dairy farm. The funeral service was held at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, June 17 at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. Bob Fillier officiating. An Orange Lodge Memorial Service took place at the funeral home June 16 at 7 p.m. The pallbearers were Carl Sears, Richard Gilmer, John Somerville, Bob Juby, Jim Moore and Lawrence Wallace. Robert Kuske, 62 Robert (Bob) William Kuske of RR 1 Iroquois died Monday, June 5, 2000 at Winchester Hospital after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 62. Mr. Kuske was born Sept. 26, 1937 in Ottawa to Victor and Lily Kuske, who predeceased him. He had been employed as a lead hand with the Township of South Dundas. A resident of Iroquois for the past 14 years, Mr. Kuske had also lived in Kemptville and Brockville. He was a member of the United Church, and belonged to the Federation of Anglers and Hunters. Mr. Kuske is survived by his wife Janet, whom he married Jan. 31, 1963 in Kingston. He is also survived by his daughters, Stephanie and her husband Brent Harper of North Augusta, and Jeannine and her husband Gord Burns of Lyn; his grandchildren, Gregg, Olivia, Grace and Chrissy and Jessica and Alicia; and his sisters, Anne Baxter and brother-in-law Jim of Ottawa and Joan Bradley and brother-in-law Bob of Mallorytown. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Dobson, and by a niece, Karen Daub, February 2000. Mr. Kuske was a road builder for more than 40 years with the Ministry of Transportation Ontario, Mulligan Construction, Matilda Township and South Dundas. He loved the outdoors and spent his leisure time fishing and hunting in the Colabogie area. In recent years he enjoyed moose hunting with the Findley Creek Hunt Club. He was a talented wood worker, built and furnished a log cabin at Black Donald and made many gifts for his grandchildren. Mr. Kuske had a quiet nature, a great sense of humour, and he will be missed by his many friends. A touching eulogy was given by Bill Horner at the funeral service, held at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home Wednesday, June 7. Doug Carnegie officiated at the service. Myron Dennis Beach, 72 Myron Dennis Beach, of 800 Claxton Terrace, Prescott, died July 3, 2000 at Brockville General Hospital in his 73rd year. Mr. Beach was born Feb. 29, 1928 in Hyndman, the son of Myron Beach and Laurel Colbourn. He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Marion Kirker, whom he married Nov. 5, 1955; three stepchildren, Douglas Kirker (Thelma) Duane Kirker, Lorna Ewart (Raymond) and 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and an adopted brother, Robert Beach. While living in Edmonton, Mr. Beach was the service manager for Boychuk Transportation. After retirement, the Beaches moved to Ontario, where Dennis became co-owner of a standardbred racehorse named Silent Patsea, which he enjoyed jogging. Mr. Beach was also an avid bingo player. Iva St. Pierre, 75 Iva St. Pierre of Morrisburg died suddenly Thursday, July 20, 2000 at Winchester Hospital. She was 75. Mrs. St. Pierre was born Dec. 27, 1924 in Matilda Township, and was a lifetime resident of the area. She was predeceased by her parents Clifford Sypes and Eunice Sypes (nee Kinnear). She was also predeceased by her husband, Stanley St. Pierre, whom she married May 31, 1946 in Cornwall. She is survived by sons, D'Arcy (Sherry) of Maynard and Larry (Linda) of RR 2 Iroquois; daughters, Shirley (Ronnie) Wyatt of Iroquois, Sharon (Bob) Hartle of RR 2 Iroquois, Cindy (Kevin) Ault of RR 1 Iroquois; brothers, Denzil (Nora) Sypes of Stoney Creek, Gordon (Phyllis) Sypes of Pembroke and Donald (Tina) Sypes of RR 1 Morrisburg; sisters, Lillian Ross of Ottawa, Erma (Art) Casselman of Morrisburg and Irene Black of Morrisburg; and nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by grandchildren Michelle St. Pierre, Penny Bailey, Christa St. Pierre, Tracey Sawyer, Jamie Hartle, Steven St. Pierre, Jessica Ault, Nicole St. Pierre, and by great grandchildren Davin, Tara, Tristen and Riley. Mrs. St. Pierre was predeceased by brothers Urcyl and Douglas Sypes, and by long-time friend Clifford Casselman. Mrs. St. Pierre was an avid card player who also liked to dance and play bingo. She had many friends whom she entertained at her home on a regular basis. She loved to travel and she thoroughly enjoyed trips to Florida she took with her family. Her grandchildren will especially remember her for telling them stories about the childhood experiences of their parents. Etta May Dillabough, 93 Etta May Dillabough (nee Beach) formerly of Spencerville, died at Bayfield Manor Nursing Home, Kemptville, Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001. She was 93. Mrs. Dillabough was born in South Gower June 28, 1907, the daughter of the late Sanford and Ida Beach (nee Knapp). She married William John Dillabough Feb. 23, 1928 at the United Church in Kemptville. She lived in Shanly and was a member of Shanly United Church and was also a life member of the United Church Women. After the death of her husband William Nov. 1, 1973, Mrs. Dillabough moved in with her daughter Berniece in Spencerville, where she lived for seven years. She then moved to Bayfield Manor where she resided for the past 10 and a half years. Mrs. Dillabough enjoyed attending church and church-related activities. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, particularly during the holidays when everyone was together. She was the beloved wife of the late William Dillabough; loving mother of Lloyd Dillabough (Donna) of Westbrook, Lorna Montroy of RR 4 Spencerville, Berniece Gilmour of Spencerville, Muriel Ferguson (Carl) of RR 3 Prescott, Marilyn Milburn (Alex) of San Luis Obespo, California and Glenn Dillabough (Susan) of Winnipeg, Manitoba; dear grandmother of 21 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by two daughters, Ruth Ryan and Darlo G. Dillabough; one granddaughter, Darlo Montroy; one sister, Ruby Dillabough; and two brothers, George and Frederick Beach. Bessie Hitsman, 94 Bessie Hitsman, of Bayfield Manor, Kemptville, died at her residence Thursday, April 19, 2001. She was 94. She was born Dec. 29, 1906 at Grange Town South Wales, the daughter of Abraham Budner and Amelia Marsner. She was predeceased by her husband John Jay Hitsman. Her favourite activities were gardening, singing hymns, church and her family. Mary Sherwood, 87 Mary Lucy Mae Sherwood, 365 Vankoughnet St., Prescott, died Thursday, April 5, 2001 at her home. She was 87. She was born Dec. 19, 1913 at Glen Stewart, Ont., to William Sherwood and Pearl McLeer. She had been employed as an assembly line worker at Parke Davis Mfg. She is survived by her sisters, Luella Martineau and Winnie Webber, both of Prescott; a sister-in-law, Janet Sherwood of Prescott, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; brothers Albert and Clarence, and brothers-in-law Slim Webber and Herb Martineau. Stewart Kenneth Reid, 70 Stewart Kenneth (Ken) Reid, RR 3 Prescott, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at Brockville General Hospital. He was 70. Mr. Reid had been a carpenter for local contractors and was also employed by Caldwell Linen Mill. He was a life-time resident of the area. He was a member of the United Church and Cardinal Royal Canadian Legion Branch 105. Mr. Reid loved the water and boating and fishing. He is survived by his wife June Dillon of 38 years; his sons Ken Reid (Nicky) of Cardinal and Kenny Keeler of Morrisburg; daughter Dominique Reid of Cardinal; brother Jim Reid of Morrisburg; grandchildren Melissa, Sam, Kadena, Ryan, Becky and Stephanie; and great-granddaughter Brooklyn. Gladys Gertrude Gill, 80 Gladys Gertrude Gill, Wellington House Nursing Home, Prescott, died peacefully at her residence Wednesday, March 28, 2001. She was 80. Born in Pleasant Valley June 2, 1920, she was the daughter of George Fader and Mabel Gilmour. She had been a resident of Wellington House for the past two years, and had previously resided in Iroquois. She was a member of Iroquois United Church. She is survived by her son, Sheldon (Ann) Gill of Cardinal; daughter Anita (Ralph) Dukelow of Spencerville; brothers Ken Fader (Eloda) of Brockville and Ernest Fader (Millie) of Brockville; and sisters Nelda (Ambert) Brown of Iroquois, Edna Todd of Prescott; sister-in-law Jenny Fader of Iroquois; and several nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Cecil Fader. Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, Friday, March 30 from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. The funeral took place at Iroquois United Church March 31 at 11 am, with Rev. Dolly Dikens officiating. Interment will be at South Gower Cemetery. The pallbearers were her grandsons, Trevor and Todd Gill, Paul and Doug Veltkamp and Danny and Mark Dukelow. John Louis Mathieu, 82 John Louis Albert Mathieu, RR 1 Cardinal, died suddenly Friday, March 9, 2001 at Kemptville District Hospital. He was 82. He was born Oct. 28, 1918 at Sorel, Quebec, to Adelard Mathieu and Alma Grenier. He married Muriel Good Nov. 27, 1971. Besides his wife, Mr. Mathieu is survived by his sons John of Ottawa and Fred of RR 2 Prescott; stepson, Donald O'Hara; daughters Barbara (Leo) Merkley of Iroquois and Linda (Carl) Abrams of Cardinal; stepdaughter Ruth Knapp (Stan); brother Rene (Rose) of Cardinal; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Mathieu was predeceased by his first wife, Doris Gibson, in 1962; sisters Lucienne and Rona; brothers Lucien and Leo; and granddaughter Janie. He will be sadly missed by 17 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Mr. Mathieu was a member of Pittston United Church, and had been employed as a labourer at Canada Starch, Cardinal. Arrangements are in the care of the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal. At Mr. Mathieu's request, there was no visitation at the funeral home. A service will be held at St. John's Riverside Cemetery, Cardinal in the spring, with Rev. Patricia Swann officiating. Ivy Ferguson, 81 Ivy Ferguson, 404 King St., Prescott, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at Brockville General Hospital. She was 81. She was born the daughter of Ernest Brereton and Eva Burns Aug. 3, 1919 at Navan, Ontario. She married John Henry Ferguson Aug. 12, 1939. As a young married couple, they lived in Burritts Rapids and gave birth to their first son, Carl. While Carl was still an infant they moved to South Porcupine so Mr. Ferguson could work in the mines. Daughter Gail and son Terry were born to the family while living there. They moved to Brockville about 10 years later. It was 1952 when Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson moved into and ran the Blue Lantern restaurant. They continued with the restaurant for the next six years, during which time they completed their family with the youngest son Randy. DuPont of Canada moved into the area and bought out the Ferguson's restaurant. Their next move brought them to Spencerville and to the restaurant now known as Cook's House. Another move was made to Charleville about six or seven years later, and Mr. Ferguson took a construction job. Both Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson travelled together from job site to job site until his death June 18, 1977. With Mrs. Ferguson on her own, and after living with son Carl and daughter-in-law Muriel for a while, she was able to move to Navan to help look after her mother. Mrs. Ferguson's mother died July 17, 1988, at the age of 100. Her last move brought her to Prescott and for the first time into an apartment of her own. She quickly made friends and her social calendar filled. She was busy and loved to be on the move, enjoying bingo and social events with music and dancing. Everyone knew her as Grandma. Mrs. Ferguson treasured her family and made a point of letting each of them know regularly how much they meant to her. She loved to have visitors to her home sign her guest book on each visit. A negative word was never said about anyone, and for her, life was a celebration. She lived all her years to the fullest, being the height of unselfishness, always giving of her homes, possessions, money and herself. She carried in her heart a strong love of God that showed in everything she did. Mrs. Ferguson is survived by daughter Gail (Mrs. Bill Hutton) of Spencerville; sons Carl (Muriel) of RR 3 Prescott, Terry of Prescott and Randy (Kathy) of RR 4 Prescott; grandchildren, Todd (Elizabeth), Kelly (Mrs. Rick Matthews), Melanie Hutton (Gary Hartin), Michele (Mrs. Frank Harris) and David Hutton; great grandchildren, Chelsea, Johnathon, Jarrett, Spencer and Taylor; and sisters Maude Wyman and Hawley Brereton. She was predeceased by her parents; husband; sisters Frances Marriot and Berna Burns; and brother Hamilton Brereton. Visitation was at the Chris Slater Funeral Home May 11, 2001 from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service was May 12 at 10 am at St. Paul's United Church. A committal service followed at Maynard Cemetery. The pallbearers were Melanie Hutton, Gary Hartin, Todd Ferguson, Kelly Matthews, Rick Matthews and David Hutton. Elizabeth Jean Hutt, 66 Elizabeth Jean (Betty) Hutt, of Prescott, died Saturday, April 7, 2001 at her home. She was 66. She was born April 10, 1935 in Ogdensburg, NY. She had worked as a homemaker. She is survived by her four sons, William Hutt Jr., of Prescott, Scott Hutt of Prescott, and Kevin Hutt and Daniel Hutt, both of Brockville; and four daughters, Bonnie Brown of Mississauga, Kimberly Hutt and Sherry Hutt, both of Brockville, and Rhonda Wallace, of Iroquois. She is also survived by her mother, Evelyn Kinch, of Ogdensburg, and 13 brothers and sisters: Lois Thomas, of Daytona Beach, Fla., Arleen Siddon, of Safety Harbor, Fla., Maureen Badlam, of Ogdensburg, Donna Towsley, of Cardinal, Bonnie Larose, of Safety Harbor, Fla., Nancy Bell, of Ogdensburg, Frederick, of Ogdensburg, Daniel, of Ogdensburg, Timothy, of Ogdensburg, Robert, of Safety Harbor, Fla., David of Lisbon, Dixie, of Ogdensburg and Bernard Kinch of Heuvelton, NY.; many grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Karen Groulx, and by her father, Frederick Kinch. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott. Douglas Carl Robertson, 66 Douglas Carl Robertson, King Street, Prescott, died peacefully Tuesday, May 15, 2001 at Brockville General Hospital. He was in his 67th year. Mr. Robertson was born Aug. 6, 1934 at Finch, Ontario, where he spent his younger years until moving to Prescott and surrounding area. He worked many years at DuPont, Maitland Site, and at Coneen Construction. He was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Vera Robertson; a brother Clair; sister-in-law Violet; and a daughter, Lisa, in infancy. He is survived by two sons and one daughter, Steven (Marlene) of Nepean, Lee of Vancouver, and Karen (Frank) of Ottawa; two brothers, Clifton of Brockville and Campbell of Morrisburg; and grandson Scott of Nepean. He will be sadly missed by special friend, Patricia White and her family of Prescott. A private family service was held Thursday, May 17, 2001, at 11 am at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, with Rev. Ian MacLean officiating. A burial service followed at St. John's United Church Cemetery, Cardinal. Arnold Claxton Smith, 72 Arnold Claxton Smith, RR 1 Prescott, died Sunday, April 29, 2001 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital with his daughters at his bedside. He was 72. Mr. Smith was born Feb. 3, 1929 at Osnabruck Centre, the youngest son of Robert and Nellie Smith. He married Reta Mae Droppo, his wife of 40 years. During their married life they resided in Green Valley, Cornwall, Morrisburg and Prescott. After Reta's death, Mr. Smith moved to Ottawa and then back to Prescott, finally to reside with his daughter and son-in-law, Alanna and Tom Whelan. Mr. Smith had been employed in and owned cheese factories in Finch and Green Valley. Later, he owned Upper Canada Motel in Morrisburg. He enjoyed technical challenges, crafts, boating, dancing music and socializing with friends and family. Mr. Smith was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Nellie Smith; his wife Reta; his brother Garnet Smith and his sister Vida Droppo, as well as son-in-law Hugh Gillard. He is survived by his daughters CJ and husband Bruce Henderson, Alanna and husband Tom Whelan, Shelley and husband Jim Dale and Arnita Gillard; brother Ivan Smith; sister Barbara Smith and brother-in-law Aldon Droppo. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, PJ Robert, Tania Anne, Jonathan, Jarrod, Janna, Joshua, Jaime, Jordan and Logan, as well as great grandchildren Jonathan and Kristina. Visitation was at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, Tuesday, May 1, 2001, from 7 to 9 pm. A celebration of Mr. Smith's life was held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Prescott Wednesday, May 2, with Rev. Ian MacLean officiating. Special prayers were said by Father J. Appelman. All Mr. Smith's grandchildren took part in this celebration of life, and his son-in-law Tom Whelan said the eulogy, which was prepared by Mr. Smith's four daughters. The pallbearers were grandsons, Robert Drury, Jonathan Whelan, Jarrod Whelan, Josh Whelan, Jordan Dale and Logan Gillard. The honourary pallbearer was great grandchild Jonathan Van Auken. Interment took place at Finch Cemetery Saturday, May 5, 2001. A lovely lunch after interment was prepared and served at the home of Doris and Fraser Hannah of Finch. Helen Savor, 79 Helen Savor, Wellington House, Prescott, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at her residence. She was 79. She had previously resided at RR 2 Iroquois, where she lived her entire life prior to moving to Wellington House. She was born May 15, 1921 in Matilda Township, the daughter of John Savor and Winnifred Merkley, who predeceased her. Miss Savor is survived by her sisters, Frances Hanna, of RR 5 Spencerville, and Margaret Cook, of Prescott. She was predeceased by sisters Dorothy Cromwell, Katherine Hanna and Norma Claxton, and by brothers Ralph, John and twin brother Howard. Herbert William Mellon, 78 Herbert William Mellon, 356 Henry St. W., Prescott, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at Brockville General Hospital. He was 78. Born July 29, 1922 in Cardinal, he was the son of James Mellon and Deliah Levere. He and Ruth Rachael Mellon (nee Kreiger) were married Oct. 5, 1945 at St. John's Anglican Church in Prescott. Mr. Mellon had been employed as a custodian with the school board. He is survived by his daughter, Terry (Mrs. Jim Durant) of Brockville; a brother, Egbert (Marg) of Prescott; a sister, Alzina Bell of Owen Sound; grandchildren, Cindy Perrin, Angie Smith (Trevor) and Jimmy Crossman, all of Brockville; great grandchildren, Jessica and Sheena Perrin and Phillip Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Mellon was predeceased by his parents, his wife and several brothers and sisters. Visitation was at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, Friday, April 20, 2001 from noon to 2 pm. Eva Leone Dubrule, 94 Eva Leone (Gilson) Dubrule, a long-time resident of Prescott, died at St. Lawrence Lodge Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, in her 95th year. Mrs. Dubrule was born in Roena, Matilda Township, Dec. 12, 1906, a daughter of Edith and Milton Gilson. She grew up in Iroquois, where her father was lockmaster at the locks east of Iroquois. She graduated from Ottawa Normal College in 1923. On Oct. 21, 1930 she married Joseph Gerald Dubrule (Jerry,) who was managing director of the Prescott and Ogdensburg Ferry Company. In 1931, they purchased the "Colonel Jessup" home on Dibble St. W. (now the Chris Slater Funeral Home) in Prescott. After 20 years they moved to the smaller home on the corner of James and West Streets. Mrs. Dubrule was active in sports, skiing and skating when her children were small and she later enjoyed fishing, golf and curling. She was a very active volunteer in St. Paul's United Church Guild, the Canadian Red Cross, CNIB and especially the Brockville General Hospital Wagon Shop (for more than 35 years). The river was the love of her life, swimming without permission as a child, and cruising the Thousand Islands in their yacht. She was predeceased by her husband and her son David in 1989; brothers Basil and Arnold; and by sisters Hazel Fergusson and Vera Dewar. She is survived by her daughter Geraldine of Kingston; daughter-in-law Sandra of Fredericton N.B.; and grandchildren Michael of Toronto, Robyn of Guelph and Matthew and his wife Mary Lou Pierce of McAllen, Texas. Rev. Blair Paterson conducted a memorial service in the chapel of the Chris Slater Funeral Home Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001 at 11 am. Interment followed at St. Mark's Cemetery. Maude Crowder, 89 Maude Crowder, Wellington House, Prescott, died at her residence Monday, Sept. 3, 2001. She was 89. Born May 6, 1912, in Mountain Township, she was the daughter of William Barkley and Bessie Brown. She married Cecil Crowder in 1931. Mrs. Crowder had been a member of St. John's United Church, Cardinal, the United Church Women, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 105, having served as president. She had been employed as a medical secretary for Dr. Allen and Dr. Chang. Mrs. Crowder is survived by her daughter Erma Armstrong (Fay) of RR 3 Prescott; sisters Wilda Reilly (Art) of Ottawa and Edna Barnes (Jake) of London; grandchildren LouAnn (Graham) VanCamp; Gay (Robert) Rust, Martha (Shawn) Disheau, all of Cardinal, and Tom Armstrong of Prescott; and great-grandchildren Ashley and Abby VanCamp, Sara and Justin Rust, Courtney and Lindsay Armstrong and Spencer Disheau. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; a sister Alice Tupper; and by brothers Bob and Jim Barkley. Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements. Jo-Anne Elaine Ferguson, 53 Jo-Anne Elaine Ferguson, 653 James St. W., Prescott, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001 at St.Vincent de Paul Hospital, Brockville. She was 53. She was born July 13, 1948, in Brockville, the daughter of Herb Martineau and Luella Sherwood. She married Robert Ferguson July 23, 1966 at St. John's Anglican Church, Prescott. Mrs. Ferguson is survived by her husband Bob Ferguson of Prescott; sons Robert of Ottawa, Sean and Shane, both of Prescott, her mother Luella Martineau of Prescott; sisters Alberta (Mrs. Bob Byers) of Kingston; and her brother, John Martineau of Prescott. She was predeceased by her father, Herb Martineau. Her interests included knitting, playing darts, cooking and collecting teddy bears. She worked as a homemaker at home. Family and friends gathered at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, Monday, Sept. 17, from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. Annabel Thelma Hess, 82 Annabel Thelma Hess of Dundas Manor, Winchester, died at her residence Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001. She was 82. She was born Nov. 7, 1918 in Elma, Ont., the daughter of William Hess and Rachel Cramer. She had been a resident of Dundas Manor for 11 years, and previously resided in Mariatown. She was a member of Morrisburg Pentecostal Church. Annabel Hess is survived by her son, Mervyn Hess of Mariatown; daughters Audrey (Lloyd) Wylie of Prescott and Edna (Calvin) Zeron of Mariatown; her brother George Hess; five grandchildren: Lisa (Allan) Bailey, Michael (Donna) Zeron, Scott Zeron, Calvin Zeron Jr., Bill (Janice) Wylie; and six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents. Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, Sunday, Sept. 16 from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. Charles Seeley, 58 Charles Alzon Seeley, 3951 Weir Rd., RR 2, Spencerville, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001 at St.Vincent de Paul Hospital, Brockville. He was 58. Mr. Seeley was born Feb. 11, 1943 at Dundas County, Ont., the son of Rae Seeley and Stella Herriman. He married Gloria Christine Seeley, nee Doran-Johns. He is survived by his wife Gloria of RR 2 Spencerville; his mother Stella Seeley; his son Sheldon (wife - Christine) of Ajax, his daughter Kimberly Seeley of Richmond Hill; step-children Stacey Johns of Ottawa and Derek Johns of Prescott; grandchildren Madison and Hunter Seeley; and his sister Hilda Barkley. Mr. Seeley was predeceased by his father Rae Seeley and a daughter, Myrna. Mr. Seeley had been the owner and operator of Seeley Bus lines. Visitation was at Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, Aug. 20 and 21 from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service was held in the chapel of the funeral home Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 11 am, with Rev. Doug Blair officiating. A eulogy was given by John McCrea. The pallbearers were Bernie Blair, Wayne Salmon, Derek Johns, Garry Cooper, Brian Seeley and Sheldon Seeley. The honourary bearer was Ed Westlake. Harry Ian Godfrey Moore, 69 Cardinal resident Harry Ian Godfrey Moore, 69, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001 at the Winchester and District Memorial Hospital, with his family by his side. He was born May 11, 1932 in Brockville, the son of Stanley Ewart Moore and the former Edythe Godfrey. He was raised and educated in Cardinal where he lived all his life. At age 16, he went to work on the boats, where he went from deck hand to captain, sailing on the Great Lakes and inland waterways. He married Marlene E. Hitsman Jan. 31, 1953 in Kingston, Ont. Mr. Moore identified with St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Cardinal, where he was a member of the Board of Managers. He was very active in the Cardinal Lions Club, being a charter member. He also belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 105 and the Riverside Seniors. He was a member of the Toronto Marine Historical Society, and in April he wrote an article on the steamship Fort Henry for its paper. A thoughtful and generous person, he most enjoyed being with his family and friends playing cribbage and euchre. He also enjoyed travelling and going out in his boat on the St. Lawrence River, but for the past couple of years, enjoyed watching the boats from the deck of his home. Mr. Moore is survived by his wife Marlene; his son Stanley and wife Ann of Cardinal, his daughter Cheryl Shaver and husband Doug of Cardinal, daughter Jean Hoffman and husband Bruce of Petawawa, and daughter Kim Moore of Cardinal; special friend Kellie Scharbach of Cardinal and six grandchildren: Chris Hoffman and wife Sophia, Stacy Hoffman, Micheal Hoffman, Tonya Anderson and husband John, Roger Shaver and Marc Scharbach; and five great grandchildren: Devin Hoffman, and Sara, Megan, Andrew and Austin Anderson. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and step mother Lulu McQuade Moore. Friends called at the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, where the Cardinal Lions Club held a special service. The funeral was held Aug 4 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Jack Urquhart officiating. Stacy Hoffman shared memories of her grandfather on behalf of the grandchildren. Burial was at Mainsville Cemetery. The pall bearers were fellow Lions Garry Tracey, Dick Willis, Larry Dishaw, Earl Nesbitt, Jim O'Brien and Merv Smith. Allan Lorne Casselman, 55 Allan Lorne Casselman, 164 Dibble St. E., Prescott, died Sunday July 22, 2001 at Brockville General Hospital. He was 55. Mr. Casselman was born June 11, 1946 at Kemptville, Ont., the son of Andrew Lorne Casselman and Viola Casselman. His spouse is Gloria Jean Ducharme (nee Miller). He had been employed as a driver at transportation. He is survived by his (common law) wife Jean Ducharme; his son John; daughter Vivian (Mrs. Jim Normandeau); grandchildren Leonard and Melissa; sisters Betty Kinch, Beverly Forbes, Liz Casselman and Joyce Riddel, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents. There was no visitation at the funeral home. Arrangements were handled by the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott. Virginia Ferguson, 78 Virginia Ferguson of Chesterville died gracefully Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002 at the Winchester District Memorial Hospital. She was 78. She was the beloved wife of the late Rev. L.M. Ferguson; loving mother to Robert (Anne Marie Leger) and Shauna (Alan Lummiss); and grandmother of Heather and Maureen Ferguson and Justin and Megan Lummiss. Mrs. Ferguson graduated as an Associate with Honors from the Ontario College of Art and had worked as a commercial artist, illustrating music books, Sunday school papers and many school textbooks.  A former resident of Toronto, Cape Breton, Spencerville and Chesterville, she conducted private art classes and began the art program at North Dundas District High School, where she taught until her retirement in the 1980s. Mrs. Ferguson was an avid painter and many of her works adorn churches, institutions and homes in eastern Ontario.  The funeral was held Sunday afternoon (Jan. 20) at Trinity United Church, Chesterville, and was officiated by Rev. Doug Carnegie, who was assisted by Rev. Sandy MacPherson, Rev. Carol Poley-Delisle and Rev. Janet Evans. Pall bearers were Douglas Elliott, Justin Lummiss, David Malcomson, John McMillan, Richard Woodland and David Woods. Honorary pall bearers Hilda Belsher, Margaret Casselman, Ina Brownell-Poole and Miriam Woodland also assisted in the service. Musical selections were contributed by the members of the Morewood United and Trinity United Church choirs, friend Doug Warren and piper John Yourt. Audrey Harrington, 52 Audrey Harrington of RR 1 Cardinal died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Winchester and District Memorial Hospital at the age of 52. She was born March 8, 1949 in Holland and moved to Canada with her family shortly after she was born. Her parents were Tunis Vermey and Johanna Vermey, who predeceased her. She married Carl Harrington July 18, 1970 in Brockville. She had been employed as an executive assistant at SCI in Brockville (formerly Brock Telecom) for 34 years. Her main interests were home and family and crocheting. Mrs. Harrington is survived by her husband Carl; son David of Prescott; and Lisa at home. She will be sadly missed by several nieces and nephews. Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, Monday, Jan. 21, where the funeral took place Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 11 am.  Rev. Jack Urquhart officiated. Interment was at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland. The pall bearers were John McMillen, John MacMillan, Dean MacMillan,  Bob Arnott, John Muilwyk and Brian Empey. Olive Allin, 86 Olive Allin of Sarnia, Ontario died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002 at Sarnia General Hospital. She was 86. She was born April 1, 1915 in Montreal, Quebec, the daughter of Samson Elliott and Elizabeth Bell. She married John Allin in July 1955 in Montreal. A resident of Sarnia for the past four years, Mrs. Allin had also lived at RR 2 Iroquois for 26 years and in Montreal. She worked as a homemaker and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 105 Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a member of St. John's United Church in Cardinal. She is survived by her stepson Edward (Janet) Allin of Sarnia; stepdaughter Lillian Harrisson (Bernie Pelletier) of Morrisburg; and 12 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband John; stepson John Allin Jr.; and stepdaughter Norma Madden. Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, Tuesday, Jan. 22, where the funeral service was held Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 1 pm. Rev. Arlyce Schiebout officiated. Louis Patrick Rooney, 48 Louis Patrick Rooney, a life-long resident of Iroquois, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002 at Winchester and District Memorial Hospital. He was 48. He was born Aug. 9, 1953 in Brockville to Frank Rooney and Margaret Mitten. He married Audrey Rooney (nee Merkley) Oct. 11, 1975 at St. Cecilia's RC Church, Iroquois. Mr. Rooney was the owner of Rooney Feeds Ltd. in Iroquois and South Gower, and was a partner in Tri-County Protein in Winchester. He was a member of Ottawa Feed and Grain dealers, and of St. Cecilia's Church. He is survived by his father Frank Rooney (Carol Daisley) of Iroquois; his wife Audrey; sons Jason (Erinn) of Etobicoke and Spencer at home; brothers Michael (Nancy) of Calgary and Edward (Nancy) of Caledon East; sisters Rosann (Kevin) Mullins of Manotick, Mary (Barry) Lemoine of Orleans, Colleen Rooney of Toronto and Caroline (Ray) of Iroquois. He was the son-in-law of Barb and Leo Merkley of RR 2 Iroquois; the uncle to 16 nieces and nephews and brother-in-law to Kenny (Margaret) Merkley of Kingston and Margie of Keswick. He was predeceased by his mother Margaret. Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, Tuesday, Jan. 22. The funeral was held at St. Cecilia's Church, Iroquois, Thursday, Jan. 24 at 11 am, with Father Hibert officiating. Cremation took place. Michael Alan Boyd, 42 Michael Alan Boyd, 600 Kain Rd., RR 1, Cardinal, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001 at home. He was 42. Mr. Boyd was born May 11, 1959 at Brockville, Ont., the son of Kenneth Boyd and Agnes Seeley. He married Sheila Boyd (nee Arcand). He is survived by his family: Matthew and Jessie and Sheila Boyd; his brother Peter (wife Carlene); sisters Diana (Mrs. Dennis Smith), Cheryl (Mrs. Mark Davy), Debbie Boyd and Billy Martin; nieces and nephews Heather and Sarah Smith, Lee and Shanna Davy, Victoria Boyd, Ashley and Vanessa Martin, Aimee and Phillip Boyd. \He was the grandson of Clayton Seeley and son-in-law of Ed and Sandra Arcand. Mr. Boyd enjoyed his family and horses, and had been employed as a millwright at Casco. A mass of Christian burial was held at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Prescott, Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002 at 2 pm, with Father J. Appelman and Father Rob Arsenault officiating. The pall bearers were Paul Bernier, Corey Earl, Dap O'Brien, Kevin Patrick, Gary Rayner, Rennie Rayner, Martin Stobo, Paul Whitney, Randy Whitney Burial will be at St. Mark's Cemetery in the spring. William Earl Armstrong, 84 William Earl "Bill" Armstrong, RR 3 Prescott, died peacefully at Winchester Hospital surrounded by his family Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002. He was 84. He was born Sept. 25, 1917 in Edwardsburgh Township. He was the son of Stanley Armstrong and Annabelle Seeley, who predeceased him. He was married to Madalene Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong had been a truck driver on the milk run for Husband's Transport of Brouseville, and lived his lifetime in and around the Cardinal area. Mr. Armstrong is survived by his wife Madalene and daughters Martha (Terry) Mizuik of Port Colborne and Marianne (David) MacDonald of Cardinal. He is lovingly remembered as papa to Stacey Sulaiman (Steve), Katie, Michael, Jordie and Kailee and great grandchildren Sadie, Samuel and Sachairi. He will be sadly missed by Harley and Itty Bits. He was predeceased by brothers Acil, Donald and Ross and by sisters Mary Brown and Betty York. Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, was entrusted with the arrangements. Max Meyer, 87 Max Meyer, 1603 Bradley Cres., RR 1 Prescott, died suddenly Friday, Jan. 4, 2002 at Kingston General Hospital. He was 87. He is the beloved husband of Edith Richter and the late Anna Marie Baier; dear father of Esther (Ken) Duvall of Mariatown, Erwin (Marianne) of Stouffeville and Jane (Marcel) Turpin of Orleans; grandfather to Monica, Brenda, Brigitte and Hollie Duvall, Mark, Brent and Andrea Meyer, Sally and Andre Sickman; great grandfather to Jordyn, Allie and Sam Bruce; and step-father to Wolfgang, Bernd and Wilfrid Richter. Mr. Meyer was predeceased by his parents; daughter-in-law Ilona Meyer; great grandson Joshua William Bruce; sisters Martha and Emily; and brother Ernest. He was born April 22, 1914 in Switzerland to Ernst Meyer and Emma Studer. Mr. Meyer immigrated to Canada in 1949, and was a carpenter by trade and he also farmed. He was quite independent and strong, both in a physical sense and in his will. He was a doer, not a talker, and a proud and proper man. Mr. Meyer was optimistic and positive, always looking for the good in others and regarded the best side of people. Mr. Meyer married Anna Marie Baier March 25, 1943. They eventually arrived in Williamsburg, where he bought and began working the old Merkley farm. Besides working the dairy farm, he also worked for Black Lumber and for Stewart and David Byers of Chesterville. After losing Mrs. Meyer to cancer in 1980, he sold the farm and moved to Morrisburg. He married Edith June 18, 1983 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Morrisburg and they have resided in Prescott. Mr. Meyer enjoyed downhill skiing, played the clarinet and loved to dance. He enjoyed motorcycling as well as gardening. Friends were received at the Parker Funeral Home, Morrisburg. The funeral service was held in the chapel of the funeral home Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002 at 3 pm, with Pastor Joachim Barkley-Probst officiating. John Archibald Irvine, 86 John Archibald MacGregor Irvine, 6 St. Lawrence Court, Prescott, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001 at Brockville General Hospital. He was 86. He was born May 12, 1915 in Iroquois, the son of Oliver Archibald Irvine and Enid MacGregor Irvine. He was married to Doris Vanetta Irvine (nee Winder). Mr. Irvine is survived by his wife Doris Irvine of Prescott; daughter Sharon Anne Irvine and her husband Mark Grummett of Toronto; grand daughters Victoria Anne Grummett and Katherine Brooke Grummett, both of Toronto; sisters Stella Shantz of Cambridge and Clara Francis of Brockville; numerous nieces and nephews; and long-time friend Gordon (Nick) Nixon of St. Catharines. He was predeceased by his parents; four of his siblings: sister Alice White of Kingston, Ont. and brothers Harold Irvine, who died in World War II, Donald Irvine of Prescott and Douglas Irvine of Hainsville, Ont. Raised on the family farm near Hainsville, Ont., Mr. Irvine grew up as part of a large family - the second born of seven children. His love of agriculture was developed during the 1920s and early 1930s as he and his brothers helped his father with poultry, dairy cattle, pigs and grain products. The farm had been in the Irvine family since 1856 and Mr. Irvine was the fourth generation to be raised there. Following high school graduation, Mr. Irvine received an Honours Bachelor of Science, specializing in agriculture at the Guelph campus of the Ontario Agriculture College, University of Toronto. He was employed following graduation in farm equipment sales based in Toronto. At the onset of the war, he enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces, and after having been selected for officer training in Victoria, British Columbia, he travelled to the west of Canada before being sent overseas. Mr. Irvine was part of a light armored division, the Manitoba Dragoons, that served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany after D-Day. He was promoted to the rank of major before returning home safely in 1945 at the end of the war. Mr. Irvine married Doris Winder of Aylmer, Ont. in 1949 and worked for 25 years at the Elgin Co-operative Services in St. Thomas, Ont., retiring as general manager in 1970. Mr. and Mrs. Irvine, with their daughter Sharon, moved to their home near Prescott where he resided until his death Dec. 8, 2001. A memorial service took place at the Anglican Church of Clement, Toronto, Dec. 15, 2001 at 1 pm with Rev. Cheryl Palmer officiating. Cremation was at Cataraqui Crematorium Dec. 10, 2001. Donald G. Whelan, 58 Donald G. Whelan, 71 Kyle Drive, Morrisburg, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001 at Cornwall General Hospital. He was 58. Mr. Whelan was born March 4, 1943 in Chesterville, the son of Tom Whelan and Mary Whelan (nee Rathwell). He married Myrna Whelan (nee Becksted) Oct. 30, 1965 in Morrisburg. He is survived by his wife Myrna; brothers Tom (Alanna) of RR 1 Prescott, and Jim (Lisa) of Morrisburg; his sister Maureen (Bernie) Longson of Barrie; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Mr. Whelan was born and raised in Chesterville, and moved with his family to Morrisburg in 1954. He has been a resident of Morrisburg ever since. He has been employed at St. Lawrence Parks Commission, Rohm and Haas and Caldwell Linen Mills. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 48, Morrisburg. He was a compassionate and caring man, especially to animals and those less fortunate and the elderly. He loved being with his family and when he got together with his brothers and sister, the jokes and pranks were great entertainment for everyone. He played many sports and had an active life despite a number of physical disabilities. In spite of his pain, Mr. Whelan fought his final battle with strength and determination. His battles and his pain are now over and he rests on that high mountain, safe and warm in the arms of God. Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, Saturday Dec. 29, 2001. A private family service was held at the funeral home Sunday, Dec. 30 at 3 pm, followed by cremation. Audrey Mae Tousaw, 90 Audrey Mae Tousaw, Wellington House Nursing Home, Prescott, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001 at her residence. She was 90. Mrs. Tousaw was born May 16, 1911 at Toronto, Ont., the daughter of Fred Morrell and Vera Elliott. She married John Roy Tousaw April 30, 1932 at Dundela. She is survived by her son Jack (wife Reta); granddaughters Tania (Mrs. Dan Roddick) and Tiffany (Mrs. Allan McNeilly); great grandchildren Kaitlyn Roddick and Jackson McNeilly; and a brother, Don Morrell (wife Melba). She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; a brother, Floyd Morrell; and a sister, Joyce McGowan. Mrs. Tousaw interests included hand crafts and music, and she worked as a housewife at home. Visitation took place Dec. 13 from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service was held in the chapel of the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at 11 am, with Rev. A. Schiebout officiating. A committal service in the chapel was followed by burial at Iroquois Cemetery. Earl C. Barton, 75 Earl C. Barton of Prescott died at Ottawa Civic Hospital in his 76th year Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001. He was born in Maynard, the son of William and Grace (Bass) Barton. He married Marguerite Gillmoure at Spencerville United church 52 years ago, and they resided in Prescott their entire married life, where they raised their family of three children. As a young man, Mr. Barton worked with his brother Bert Barton in the ice-making and moving business, a feed store and mail contracts. For more than 25 years he was the sole owner and operator of Earl C. Barton Moving and Storage. In later years he was a real estate agent for Strader's, Irving Miller's and Royal LePage. Most recently, he was known as a marshall at the Prescott Golf Club. Mr. Barton had many hobbies and interests, including snowmobiling, curling, gardening, carpentry, vacations to Myrtle Beach and golfing. He is survived by his beloved wife Marguerite; two daughters, Penny O'Brien and her husband Charles of Orleans, and Nancy Lefebvre and her husband Dale of Johnstown; and his son Richard and his wife Lynn of Ottawa. He was a loving grandfather and greatly loved by grandchildren Holly and Kevin O'Brien, Beth (Mrs. Todd Brayton), Marsha Daw, Laura and Andrew Barton, and great grandchildren Summer, Jacob and Jesse Brayton. He is also survived by sisters Jeraldine Dempsey and Dorothy Running; his brother Don and his wife Elizabeth; sister-in-law Billy Barton; brother-in-law Bert Geary and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Barton was predeceased by his parents; his brothers Bert, Hubert, Evan, Wilson and Lloyd; and sisters Willa Ault, Marion Geary and Ruth Barton. Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Dibble Street West, Prescott. The funeral service was held Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001 at St. Paul's United Church, Prescott, with Rev. Blair Paterson officiating. Mr. Barton's son Richard delivered the eulogy and his daughter Nancy read the scripture. Serving as pallbearers were sons-in-law Charles O'Brien and Dale Lefebvre, grandsons Kevin O'Brien and Andrew Barton, grandson-in-law Todd Brayton and nephews Doug Barton and Gary Cook. Committal took place at the Maynard Cemetery.
