MISS ELEANOR'S
BUSY DAY

One evening Miss Eleanor and her husband John were sound asleep when they were awakened by a loud 'DING! DING! DING!' from the bell that was attatched to the door on her back porch.

One of Susy Bell Ringer Racoon's cubs just had triplet cubs of her own and brought them to meet Miss Eleanor. She lined her cubs on the stoop to make sure Miss Eleanor would notice them, and rang the bell untill Miss Eleanor came to the door. Miss Eleanor admired the cubs, gave the momma her reward of sweet marshmallows and offered to fix some formula for the tiny cubs.

When the last bit of marshmallow was consumed, the proud momma racoon returned to the wild with her cubs. Miss Eleanor no sooner fell asleep when she was startled awake by the ringing of the bell. The news had spread that Miss Eleanor was handing out midnight snacks, and all of her racoon friends were determined to get some!

To add to the list of her bell ringer friends was her cat 'Preston', who picked up the bell ringing habbit by watching the racoons!
She was not going to respond to their demands, and tried to fall back to sleep. Just when the bell ringers gave up, a mocking-bird, in a tree three houses away started imitating the sound of an insect, tree toad, and a bell! If he had been in a nearby tree, she would have thrown a shoe at him! There is a limit to the amount of noise she could tolerate in one night!

The next day while Miss Eleanor was writing about her newest adventure in her newspaper column, she heard the neighbor's dog barking. Her husband, who was working in their yard, shouted up to her that the triplet cubs were in trouble! They were on the outside of their six foot high fence and couldn't get to their momma who was on the inside of the fence. She was affraid the dog might be untied and would hurt the frightened cubs. Mama Racoon was getting nervous, and so was Miss Eleanor! Her husband got his trowel and tried to make a hole for the young ones to crawel under.

Miss Eleanor quickly ran downstairs while her husband made a passageway for the cubs, but they wouldn't use it! Not even a hand full of marshmallows would induce the frightened cubs to crawel under the hole. Miss Eleanor tried walking outside of the fence to encourage them to use the hole, but they turned and started growling and charging at her! Judging by their size she guessed they were big enough to give her a nasty bite if she should try to pick them up. She NEVER forces her attention on any animal!

Then the momma coon climbed a small dogwood tree and enticed one cub to struggle up to the top of the fence. She grabbed it by the nape of the neck and helped it down the tree. The other two took the hint and folowed suite. Momma coon then hearded all three under the porch in the old abandoned coon home Susy Bell Ringer used to occupy. And there they would stay, safe and sound, for a long long time!
