The South Seas Campaign:
Swashbuckling Adventure in
the Land of Trinalia
By Alan D. Kohler
Tai - City of Swords
The city Tai - City of Swords, Jewel of the South
Seas - call it what you will. This modest city is the largest one in the
Queen's Colony of the Sword Isles.
Queen's Colony? Ha! What a joke! The colony probably
hasn't paid a copper to the Principality since the interregnum years ago.
It's mostly run by the petty nobles who continually bicker over who owns
what.
I'm sorry? Did I say petty? Did I insult your
dear liege? I should have said petty and greedy! I'd wager
20 gold that the reason it's still called the Queen's Colony is that the
nobles are too miserly to pay a damn scribe to change the documents!
Well, the Isles ain't totally run by the nobles.
The head seat of the council is held by the high priest of Xanathar. You'd
think that with some priesthood like Xanathar's at the helm, this place'd
be the epitome of order.
It ain't. Each noble house - and Xanathar's temple
- has a company of "guards" that are supposed to keep the islands all nice'n'orderly.
Problem is that the shining blades are about the only company that takes
the job seriously. 'Bout any other guard'd look the other way from a murder
with a few well placed silvers.
Xanathar's priesthood and guards are the only
thing that keep the 'Isles from going to totally to the abyss. But anyone'd
tell ya, they don't do near enough. No way that they could.
But the nobles only grudgingly put up with Xanathar's
priesthood. This is the only Aborian colony from here to Drakar that still
trades in slaves. Sure, the priests have pushed accords that limit the
slavery, but I've seen plenty of nobles worm their way around the rules.
They've been fightin' to get rid of slavery altogether, but take it from
me: it ain't happening soon!
Nice piece of steel 'ya got there. There's a
saying among merchants here - the only coin more precious than gold in
Tai is steel. That'd be the sharp kind of steel, if ya' get my meaning.
Ya' see, there's tradesmen of death here - warriors,
that is - from every corner of the globe. They come to train. The come
to sell their wares. Them don't rightly know it when they get here, but
lot's of em' just come to die.
