UFO Incident Resurfaces : Researcher says he has photo of mysterious lights near Cannon

By Marlena Hartz - Clovis News Journal marlena_hartz@link.freedom.com

June 17, 2006

CLOVIS, NM - Thirty years after UFOs were reportedly sighted hovering over Clovis skies, another photograph of the event has surfaced.

A UFO researcher said this week he has a photo — albeit fuzzy — of a tubular shaped craft that danced above Clovis on Jan. 21, 1976.

Canadian resident Brian Vike said he obtained the photo about a week ago from a former Eastern New Mexico University journalism student.

Vike would not reveal the identity of that photographer, but said his source was threatened in 2004 after discussing the events on a radio talk show.

"His attitude now is 'people need to know.' And 'if anything happens to my family, people definitely need to know,'" Vike said.

Vike plans to post the photograph on his Web site, www.hbccufo.org. He is also searching for more eyewitness accounts of the events.

"I want to try to figure out what these people are seeing," said Vike, who said he has investigated scores of reports of UFO sightings. "We don't have the answer: Is there life out there?"

Another photo of a UFO sighted in Clovis that same week appeared in the Jan. 23 edition of the Clovis News Journal. That photo, which shows a lightning-like streak in the sky in the shape of a telephone receiver, was taken by amateur astronomer Steve Muscato.

Muscato, who now lives in Las Vegas, Nev., remembers the reported sightings caused quite a stir.

"I received dozen of calls from all over the country," said Muscato, who took the photograph through a window from the top floor of the Clovis Hotel.

"I honestly thought it was Saturn," recalled Muscato, who was a high school senior at the time. Muscato said he checked with a noted astronomer, who told him Saturn would not have been visible at that time.

To this day Muscato's not sure what he saw that night.

"I remember him coming home all excited," said Frank Muscato, Steve's father, who then owned a doughnut store at 14th and Mitchell. "The only thing I was concerned about was whether (the UFOs) wanted carry-out doughnuts."

The elder Muscato said the buzz in town lasted awhile.

"Everybody was excited about it," Muscato said. "All the major networks were in town and they were all on the top of Hotel Clovis."

A document from the National Military Command Center confirms UFO sightings on Jan. 21, 1976, but does not offer an explanation as to the origin of the crafts.

"Two UFOs are reported near the flight line at Cannon AFB, New Mexico," the document reads. "Security Police observing them reported the UFOs to be 25 yards in diameter, gold or silver in color with a blue light on top, a hole in the middle, and red light on bottom."

The Military Command document on Cannon is lumped in with 11 other declassified, military reports of UFO sightings which occurred across the nation near military installations, and in Iran, from 1975 and 1976.

Following the Jan. 21 UFO sightings in Clovis, other strange events were reported in the area, according to the CNJ.

UFO sightings continued in Clovis for the next two days, according to CNJ archives. On Jan. 22, 1976, the strange objects zipped around Cannon F-111s that were sent into the air to investigate them, according to testimony that appears on Vike's Web site. The objects darted out of the reach of the jets, cutting through the air at 90-degree angles, and racing at phenomenal speeds, the Web site reads.

A CNJ staff writer reported seeing 23 UFOs, sliding in and out of complex formations, the next night.

Also, an unexplained circle was burned into the ground of a New Mexico ranch and a cylindrical object of unknown origin was discovered in the grass in the days following the initial UFO sightings, according to CNJ archives.

Several UFO investigative teams, including Project Starlight International, swarmed into Clovis after the sightings, according to CNJ archives. But most concluded that the sightings were likely a result of a weather inversion, or some other weather phenomenon. One suggested they could have been glimpses of a planet.

Clovis resident John Fondrick was a senior in high school when the UFOs were sighted and a series of articles on the events appeared in the CNJ. He said he doesn't recall seeing the mysterious crafts. He and his friends attempted numerous sky vigils atop Hotel Clovis, but were always intercepted by police, he said.

At the time of the alleged sightings, Clovis resident Bill Gaedke was an advisor to the commander of the 27th Fighter Wing. He spent six years stationed at the base and retired in 1979 as a chief master sergeant, he said.

"I didn't hear anything about (the UFOs). I vaguely recall something about the crop circles, but I couldn't relate the details," he said.

The deputy chief of Cannon Public Affairs, 1st Lt. James Nichols, said the base could provide "no information" on the UFO sightings of 1976, or on whether or not there have been subsequent UFO sightings around Cannon since.

Several other longtime area residents contacted for the story said they were either unaware of the reports or had no first hand knowledge.

More Strange Lights Reported Over Lubbock

NUFORC Sighting Report

Occurred:3/24/2006 22:30 (Entered as:3/24/2006 22:30)

Reported:3/25/2006 6:05:45 PM 18:05

Posted:5/15/2006

Location:Lubbock, TX.

Shape:Circle

Duration:30 seconds

Saw an illuminated object moving quickly from the south to the north at a high altitude and was being followed by a plane.

At around 10:30 pm I was in my back yard and saw a swift moving lighted circular object that was about 35 degrees above the horizon at what seemed a high altitude. My house faces north and the back door into the back yard faces south. I was standing in the middle of my yard and noticed the object in the south sky moving north-north west.

One block south of my house there is a brightly lit car lot and birds and bats can be illuminated up to about 100 feet above the lot. I first I thought it was an illuminated bird as it moved across the sky but as it moved very quickly (approximately 10 times the speed of a jet airliner at cruising altitude) from a south-south west, to west position it became obvious that it was it was not being illuminated from the ground because it never waivered in brightness and appeared to be at a high altitude.

The light was not brilliant more of solid off white illumination. The light did not blink nor did I see it change color (I am red-green color blind and therefore might not of noticed subtle color changes).

Once it was approaching a due west position I called my wife out to see. She saw it to and first thought it was a plane but I pointed out the velocity and she agreed that it was moving very fast and could not make out what it could be. It appeared to very slightly lower in altitude as it moved. We tracked it from the back yard until my sight line was blocked by my neighbors house.

I then walked quickly to the front yard and saw it in the northwest sky for about 5 more seconds before it again moved out of my sight line by the roofs of houses across the street. At the point that my sight line was blocked it was only about 15 degrees above the horizon.

I then walked back into my house and back into the back yard. I then noticed a plane in the southwest sky that was approaching from the south west then changed direction moving north along a very similar path that was taken by the object. The lights on this plane were a yellowish color and it had a blinking light. It was moving much slower than the object that had just passed.

Mysterious Lights Reported Over Lubbock

NUFORC Sighting Report

Occurred:2/27/2006 10:17 (Entered as:02/27/06 10:17)

Reported:2/27/2006 9:42:21 PM 21:42

Posted:3/11/2006

Location:Lubbock, TX.

Shape:Other

Duration:3 sec.

No outline of the ship, just appeared as six lights moving at great speeds, Great Speed!

I couldn't see an actual outline of the UFO, just lights. There were two pairs of lights, each pair containing three lights, so a total of six. They were moving at incredible speeds, but i couldnt judge if it was close or far, it was at night and the lights were dim. They weren't dim as in distance, but as if they were meant to "camoflouge" with the night.

When I saw the lights they were like so... but after about 2 seconds into the sightings they split, appearing as such.

The two pair kept their speeds and aligned perfectly, then they dissapeared into the night, almost fading into the night.

Bluish silverish UFO felt like jello over Amarillo,Texas.

When my grandfather picked me up from Puckett Elementry School at 15:00 we went down Bell St. I noticed something silver and shiny, at the corner of my eye. I looked out the passenger side window and saw something rectangular about three feet away from me.

I said " Papa look " and he said "what?" and then I felt it, it looked solid but felt like jello.

I heard my voice singing a song that I had stuck in my head from quior that morning. Then I saw three lines that had looked a lot like the design on my shoes.

My grandfather couldn't see it from where he was sitting (driving). I saw a square on top that was blueish and translucent. This is where I saw the lines that resembles on my shoe. Then it vanished very quickly from my sight.

TEXAS LARGE FLYING TRIANGLE SPOTTED OVER ARLINGTON

April 10, 2000

Mike Harman reports seeing a large Flying Triangle or kite shaped craft on April 10, 2000, at 10:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time. I was driving north on IH 360, and drove under I 20 when I spotted a large triangular shaped object about a mile directly ahead of me. The object was 60 to 100 feet wide judging from it's proximity to the high tension power line towers near it.

I would guess this craft was two pencil erasers wide as held at arm's length. The triangle was hovering or moving very slowly near the power lines. The triangle was fairly flat on top and was sharply pointed on each end. It was solid black and its nose pointed slightly downward as it hovered almost motionless. The altitude of the object was not more than 500 to 1000 feet above the ground.

I also noticed a shiny metallic much smaller object just ahead of the large triangle. This object was very close to the triangle and seemed to be connected with the triangle in some way. It could have been a helicopter, but it was too far away to tell for sure. I noticed the sun glinting off the object as it made a turn. The silver object was only a tenth the size of the triangle.

I was unable to determine sound as I was observing this from inside a moving automobile at the time. They hovered near high-tension lines. My wife was with me and would not allow me stop, "keep your eyes on the road," she said. I had two or three minute's total time to observe these strange craft. I was a mile away from the craft at the time of this sighting, I could not make out too much detail and could only see the shape of the craft.

It was too flat for a blimp or a balloon and what was that bright silver object so near it? Both were hovering not moving or moving very slowly. The weather was partly cloudy and the object was definitely below the could cover. This is the second major sighting I've had since 04/09/2000 at 12:50PM.

Bright Green Light, Orb or UFO Over Arlington Texas

April 6, 2000 - 9:35 PM CST

From:Mike Harman (Mike_Harman@rocketmail.com)

I had gone outside to observe the stars for a while before going to bed, I was standing facing south and looking at the Orion Nebula, when something caught my eye coming over our house. Looking almost directly straight up and just slightly south, I observed a bright green light, the green was the same color as the green of a traffic light and about the same brightness. The size was about the same size as Venus looks in the night sky. The green object was traveling at a very high rate of speed. What looked like about four times the speed of aircraft passing over the same area. This object took about 12 seconds to go from almost straight up and about 10 degrees south to completely out of sight over some trees down the street looking north.

When I first saw the green light I noticed that there was another object just like the first one also green in color, same brightness and also traveling the same direction and speed. This object was just to the right of the first object, and slightly behind it.

I remember thinking, "is this a low-flying aircraft?" "It sure is moving fast for an aircraft". Then I grabbed my binoculars to try to get a better look at the objects. When I viewed the leading object through the binoculars. I noticed that I could see the clouds behind the object and that there was no body or wings visible.

The clouds were illuminated by the city lights, which made it a rather brightly lit evening, especially for 9:35PM. I could clearly see the clouds contrasted against the object as it moved under them. The clouds were patchy and scattered, and spread out evenly across the sky except for further north, where they were denser. You could also see many stars between the clouds.

These objects did not look anything like stars, since they were moving at a high rate of speed. I also noticed that there was no solid object attached to these lights; they seemed to be traveling by them selves.

There was one aspect to this sighting that I thought was a bit strange, the objects seemed to be gaining speed rapidly, just prior to dropping down and disappearing behind the trees, which were about a quarter of a mile away.

Early in my observation, when I first spotted the leading object looking through my binoculars, I noticed an orange much smaller light or object that seemed to be dancing very rapidly back and forth going past the green object in either direction, not a tight zigzag but a much more exaggerated movement, and quite rapid, more so than what would be expected for eye movement or movement of the binoculars.

I could see the green object at the same time as the orange one and could tell that it was moving past the green one in a rapid movement. I was also able to pan the green object fairly easily allowing me to view the orange object as it danced around or back and forth by the green object. The orange object otherwise kept pace with the leading green object as it traversed the sky. There were no sparks, or tails visible and there were no flashing or strobe lights visible at any time on any of these objects.

This whole episode caught me totally by surprise, as I had gone out to do some star gazing, not UFO gazing. I had not planned on looking for anything strange tonight. This has left me totally spooked and quite excited, definitely High Strangeness. This is the first time I have ever seen anything quite like this; it truly made my night.

What I have described above was not the planet Venus or Jupiter, or a star. I was able to see both planets during this sighting. It also was not an aircraft, balloon or a helicopter as there was no sound at all, emanating from this object., and it moved much too fast and smoothly.

An object went from the northeast to the southwest. It took the same path as the UFO sighting on 02/16/00. It was lit up like lightening. It looked like it had strings on it and the strings were moving in and out and moving around. The strings were lit up.

I looked up and it was going from NW to SE. It was like lightening and it keep changing its shape. The colors were sometimes clear and other times it was white and yellow light. I could not see any body to the UFO, only light. It went across the road and went down behind the trees. There were no sounds.

I saw something flying over the tree tops. The wings were all lite up and it was shining on the tree tops. Over the wing there was a red light. It was disoriented...it would move from left to right and up and down but maintained its forward direction. It was going very slow and came within 150 ft. It made a right turn and the wing lights went out, but the red light shot forward and either went out or went down.

I was looking up at the moon and the stars. I saw this flying object flying over the tree tops. It was acting as though it was having problems staying in the air. The shape of the object was about the size of an automobile with 2 wings front and black all lite up and flickering. The lights were shining on the tree tops. Somewhere between the wings there was a red light. It kept a forward motion at about 5 mph, it moved to the right and left and up and down in the blink of a eye. It crossed the road, turned right and the lite wings went out. The red light shot forward and down very quickly. At this point, I think the light went out. There was no sound.

We saw what looked like stars exactly, but were moving, very high, fast and slow, eratic movememts, backwards, zig zag. No way were aircraft, satillite, balloon.

Objects looked like stars. the first one I saw ithought was a satellite, you can see satellites arcing across sometimes. Then it changed directions abruptly. Seemed to stop, go backwards, zig zag. We were looking east.

At the same time my brother in law and I saw another less bright or smaller one arcing towards it from the south or from our right. This one kept a constant vector towards the first. The first was not moving much (at this point). The second seemed to pass by the the other (like through it, in font of or behind it)? The second kept on a straight vector going approx. north east. I asked my bother in law to keep an eye on second. and it kept going til out of sight.

The first one moved around eractically moving overall slowly but in south westerly direction. then my sister and I both just lost it. Not like it just moved away. it was a very clear night. We do live very close to Fort Hood army military base. but these were not helicopters. Impossible to be any known aircraft. I know this. My sister, her husband and myself, are in our mid-thirties. College educated. Were not drinking or other.

Also no vapor trails. They seemed very high, moved too fast, eratically, stopped, even reversed to be any KNOWN aircraft.

Saw a bright hovering light near the Transco Tower. I noticed a large bright shimmering light near the Transco Tower, as we watched it appeared to hover for 4-5 minutes, it then proceeded to move to my right, bank and come straight for our building. Once it got very close and made another right bank, we could see the underside through our window at the 1 o'clock position. We then could see it was a very large triangle. It was huge.

What struck us as odd, was how it was just sitting there, and moved so slow in it's bank but was so large. It had four white lights one on each point and one in the middle, it had two smaller lights one red and one white on each side of the middle white light.

What also is odd, is it passed very close to our building, and we didn't hear a rumble or anything. (Later a plane passed overhead and we could hear it clearly) Something of that size should have made a large rumble, especially banking as much as it was. It banked pass the window and leveled, and flew off in a southeast direction.

TEXAS DISC

Lamar James writes that Pat Carithers, a wire editor for the Arkansas Gazette newspaper, once confided in me that he encountered a UFO 45 while driving in west Texas.

He said he was driving an old gas/oil guzzling Mercury across country accompanied by his wife and a noisy parakeet in a cage on the backseat.

Pat said just before reaching some mountains, the radio died as did the car engine. The parakeet also shut up. A couple of hundred yards in front of them, a silvery saucer-shape rose out of mountains, tilted at an angle and zipped out of sight within seconds. The car engine and radio started, but the parakeet remained silent.

The sighting produced unexpected benefits. Pat swears his oil guzzler didn't burn another drop of oil and the parakeet never uttered another sound for the rest of the trip.

By the way, I saw ball lightning during a storm when I was 11 years old, and it looked nothing like a UFO. It was like a soccer ball made of sparks which hit a fire hydrant and bounced down the sidewalk before disappearing.

"It was so incredible, I doubted what I had seen for a while." Thanks to Lamar James ljames@uaex.edu

UFO DOES A FAST FLYBY IN SOUTH HOUSTON, TEXAS

On Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at 2 a.m., "an extremely fast flying object from the south headed due north, passing through the controlled airspace near Hobby Airport" in South Houston, Texas (population 14,207).

"Our best guess is that this object appeared to be at about 5,000 feet in altitude or more. The vehicle had a very bright white strobe light centered in the bottom. It traveled in a straight line and a flat line trajectory--J.T.) not one as typical of a falling space rock.."

"The pulsing light could be seen as the vehicle approached and as it departed. There was no sonic boom or noise--zero! The vehicle crossed the sky from horizon to horizon in under five seconds, far too fast to even attempt getting a picture."
