THE QUINTOS

During the Spanish times, when a mother wanted her children to stop crying at night, she usually threatened them with the "quintos."

It was the policy of the Spaniards to conscript Filipino males for the guardia civil (the colonial police). For this purpose, the authorities drew by lots the names of all available able-bodied men in the barangay. Every fifth (quinto) man drawn was conscripted.

To avoid service in the guardia civil, many a quinto changed his name and lived in other places with relatives or friends.

According to the old folks, that explains the many similarities of the surnames today like Salazar and Salarza, Espino and Espina, Seballos and Ceballos, Aragon and Aragona, Torre and Torres, Ballez and Belleza.
