Excerpt: Diary of Secret Obsession

Monday: It's still dark out as I sit anxiously at the computer. This Ty page never seems to load fast enough! I'm tired, and I know I have to go to work in three hours, but I just couldn't sleep; I was too excited to see the new beanies. Ahh, here they are! How adorable! Oh, I just HAVE to have those few, especially that bear. And my daughter, Trista, will want it too, I'm sure. I wish I could show them to someone, or call somebody . . . but everyone's asleep. I guess I'll just have to wait.
Tuesday: All right, actually there are half a dozen that I need to have. Nobody seems properly excited about them around here. Maybe I'm just not talking to the right people. But then, I can't go around telling everyone at work that I love beanie babies. I'm a respected college professor, for heaven's sake. What would they think of me?
Thursday: Worked on my beanie page for kids today. I spent an hour or so working on new riddles for Magic to put on the site. I suppose I should have graded those essays my students wrote instead, but it's important that I keep up my web page, too. I've decided upon four of the new beanies I just have to have.
Friday: The Hallmark store has posted a sign saying they'll be selling beanies next Friday, and they should have some of the new ones in. I'm so excited! I have a 9:00 class I'm supposed to teach, though, and they don't open until then, so I'll have to figure out something I can do. Six of the new beanies are especially cute.
Saturday: Spent today going to some beanie sales around town. Well, one of them was actually out of town, but only 140 miles. I didn't find any that I didn't already have, and no one had any new ones yet, but I just can't help thinking that if I don't go, one of these beanie sales will have something I would hate to pass up.
Monday: Announced to my 9:00 class today that we won't be having class Friday. I decided to have them work on a research assignment. Since I want all sessions of the course to be doing the same thing, I gave the same assignment to my afternoon classes. That means I'll have 125 research papers to grade next Monday, but it'll be worth it if I can get those eight beanies I want!
Tuesday: I asked Trista to take a look at the pictures of the new beanies to tell me which she wanted, and she told me she just wanted one or two. She says all I ever talk about any more is beanies. I'm sure she's exaggerating. I can't believe she doesn't want the same ten that I do, either. She certainly has gotten to be a strange child!
Thursday: Got to go to bed early tonight to be ready for tomorrow. Took a shower so I could just throw my clothes on and go in the morning. Clothes are laid out, all ready for me to slide into. This will be much easier in the summer months when I can just camp out all night, without having to worry about freezing to death. I finally convinced my husband to meet me down there, since the store limits the number of new beanies each person can get and I really want a dozen of them. Plus Trista has two she wants. Maybe I should call Mom to see if she'll come down, too. I can say it's for her granddaughter; Mom won't know that Trista doesn't want all of them.
Friday: Arrived at 4:15 this am. I wanted to be here by 5:00, so that's ok. I couldn't even wait for the alarm to wake me; I was wide awake an hour early, so I decided to just come down here. There are about 25 people ahead of me in line. How ridiculous are these people! They could probably freeze to death-it's only 15 degrees out here. And how come they're always the same faces? Don't any of these people have jobs? How do they pay for all the beanies they want? Oh, well, Mom and hubby are both meeting me here later, just two hours from now, so I'll have a good shot at getting most of the 15 beanies I want!
