OK..it's
time for an ANALOGY.
If you don't know what that is...it's using one
thing to make a point about another thing...and we're choosing 'GO FISH'
You're going "FISHING"
your objective is to catch a fish-- you want to be an ACTOR -- your
objective is to catch an agent--snag the part!
1. Don't just go to the lake--learn
about fishing from experienced fisherpeople! They love to share their stories! As
a beginning actor, learn from those who have at least gotten their FOOT IN THE DOOR.
You'll be surprised at how helpful they can be!
2. TAKE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT and USE
THE RIGHT BAIT! Don't expect to catch a 25 lb. bass using a cane pole, some
string, and a cork! Your RESUME and your HEADSHOT are important...as are your voice, your
dress, and your appearance. If you need new equipment: if you need braces, need to lose 10
lbs., need to get a hair cut, or change your attitude -- or if you need to get a new
headshot or redo your resume -- THEN DO IT!
3. GO WHERE THE FISH ARE,
unless you just enjoy the idea of fishing and not actually catching the fish!
4. KEEP CASTING! Even if
they're not biting at the moment, keep throwing the line out there...change bait...move a
little further up the bank...they'll get hungry....and they'll start to bite. If you think
you might have a problem with your technique, ask an expert to take a look and evaluate it
for you! As an actor, find a workshop or a class where you can work on your technique and
get feedback.
Of course, if you really think about it, you're the fish--and
THEY are doing the casting!
But always BE PREPARED! Keep your equipment ready!
Once they catch you, make sure they don't throw you
back!
