Andrew Robinson

Director Andy

Andrew Robinson, Andy to his fans, is a talented, classically trained actor who has been portraying Garak since the third episode ("Past Prologue") of Deep Space Nine. The fans took to him immediately and the next season saw the return of the intriguing and mysterious tailor, only much better dressed this time around. He continues to be a fan favorite.

Andy takes his Garak role very seriously and has written a wonderful collection of stories he calls the "Garak Diary" and he often treats fans to a reading at conventions. But this close involvement with a character does have a dark side and he was very disturbed by the episode "Empok Nor" where Garak was under the influence of a psychotropic drug. This had happened before in his first big screen appearance as the Scorpio killer in the movie "Dirty Harry". But his loyal fans recognize and truly appreciate all that he puts into his characters.

Unlike Marc Alaimo (Gul Dukat) who has portrayed a number of characters on Star Trek, Andy has only portrayed one but he has worked his magic behind the camera using his award winning directing skills. The above image is Andy directing the Voyager episode "Blood Fever" though his first directing appearance was behind the camera of "Looking for Par'Mach in All the Wrong Places". He directed a second Voyager episode, "Unforgettable" leading him to joke that he is being typecast as the director of alien sex episodes.

Talent seems to run in his family and Andy's daughter, Rachel, played Melanie in the Deep Space Nine episode "The Visitor".

Garak

OK, so I like to show off my collection of signed photos, but the above one is by far my most treasured. Thank YOU Andy for giving us such a wonderful character!
