The Ibizan Hound (Podenco Ibicenco, Ca Eivessenc) is native to Ibiza, one of the Spanish Balearic Isles. Like the Pharaoh Hound, which is strongly resembles, it is descended from hunting dogs kept by the ancient Egyptians. In the 9th century BC, Egypt was invaded by the Romans, and the neighboring Carthaginians and Phoenicians were driven out to the islands of Ibiza, where they lived for about a century. However, the hounds they took with them remained on Ibiza for the next 3000 years, still retaining the colors depicted on Egyptian drawings of their ancestors. The breed was also used for hunting in southern Spain and France. The Ibizan Hound comes in three varieties: Smooth-, coarse- and longhaired.
